Thon Hotel Vica Alta

Friendly staff, but the hotel have very, very little rooms. Under the hotel is a gas station and when you unlucky you have a room with a very bad air. You can not open your window for the gas smell. This hotel offers also a menu with whale meat. For us the reasen not to eat there.

Overall, not a friendly hotel for people who like the nature and clean air.

I stayed at this hotel on my way to Nordkapp and upon returning to take the plane that would take me back to Oslo. I drov from Alta to Nordkapp and the ride is beautiful!
Alta is not a tourist destination per se, but you'll arrive here if you are visiting the area, whether for the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, or to experience the Midnight sun.
The hotel has character, looks like a mountain chalet, and my room had hard wood floors, light wood furniture, a comfortable bed with a light and warm comforter, and a clean bathroom.
The hotel has a restuarant that serves decent food.
Overall it is expensive because I believe the cost of living is $$$$ in Norway!

We stayed here as part of our tour of Northern Norway. We had a lovely room facing the minight sun. We were made very welcome. Breakfst was good, but the restuarant would have been very expensive for dinner.

Just returned back from Alta and our stay at the Thon Vica hotel which is based in the older part of the town.
Just 15-20 minutes walk from the main town centre and a stones throw away from the Alta Fjord this hotel is a great base for those wishing to get away, relax and venture out on excursions.
We requested a sea view in advance in once of the standard rooms and we were really happy with the great of the mountains and sea.Breakfast was a good hearty selection, with a choice of hot & cold dishes. Our rooms were clean and tidy + most importantly nice and warm.

Staff were very helpful and plesent + we reccomend the outdoor hot tub experience for a unique experience.
We didn't eat lunch or dinner at the hotel as we found general food prices to be expensive across Norway in general - there are plenty of supermarkets around to grab some lunch from before heading out to booked excursions.
All our excursions were booked in advance and were all great - dog sledding, evening by campfire and snowmobile riding were all amazing expericences. Without excursions it is very difficult to get the best out of alta. The view from down by the alta museum over the Fjord is also a great spot to catch the northern lights if you are lucky enough to get the right weather conditions.

If you come by car you will have no trouble finding your way in but as we arrived by bus it was a steep climb up stairs with heavy suitcases. The view from the room was wonderful -or would have been if the weather had been better. As it was Saturday afternoon/Sunday that we there the tourist office was shut, no buses were running and it was a long walk to and from Alta Rock Carving Museum - a must see. Food was very good but expensive and I have never drunk a more expensive gin and tonic.
Staff were very helpful but it was impossible, without a car or an organised tour to get the best out of Alta.

We stayed for 2 nights at the Vica (we belive it was previously called Quality hotel Vica). Very short taxi ride from the airport. Friendly staff spoke excellent English. We felt very comfortable and safe during our entire stay. The view from the hotel and just outside was breathtaking - beautiful snowy mountains and Fjord! We were made to feel really welcome and even received a complimentary mini bottle of champagne on valentines day as we had got engaged the day before. The restaurant was yummy with both traditional food (e.g. reindeer) and more common dishes (e.g. steak). The town centre was approx 15 minute walk. Our first night was in the Farmers Suite - very traditional and romantic. We also had breakfast in our room and the cheeses and pate were served in little heart shapes! When embarking on trips (huski safari & night in the igloo hotel) were collected directly from the hotel and dropped directly back.
Overall, a lovely little hotel and excellent staff who made our stay relaxing and easy.

A little bit out of the town center (15 min walk), which I did not expect. Not really an issue for us though - Alta centre isn't why you're here, probably. All tourist activities in Alta are organised very well and will pick you up in any hotel. this one is lovely and cosy, free tea/coffee available all day, very decent breakfast buffet, and a traditional outdoor bath/sauna that can be booked for private use (at a cost, but totally worth it!). Oh, and the food was pretty good too :)
