Booked this tour whilst taking our first Fjord cruise on the Aurora and as an introduction to Norway it was perfect!

First stop was the church where we were greeted by our guide in full viking regalia.
His English was superb and I found the history really interesting. Inside the church was beautiful, ornate in places and very peaceful.

After the church it was time to head down the hill and take a short walk to the viking centre where we were shown a short film about the Viking Kings and their roles in Viking history. As an english speaking person you are then handed audio equipment to take you through the rest of the exhibition.

The best part for me was the village which was another walk away past a few norwegian sheep. We got to see some authentic viking dwellings and were educated by another guide (again in costume) on how people lived in that corner of the world hundreds of years ago. We were very lucky on our visit because the sun came out which made for a lovely walk to and from the village.

I would certainly recommend this trip for anyone who loves history and wants to get as close to viking life as is possible in the 21st century.

Thank Donna R

We were advised to take bus and tour.
We met by the church and all seemed interesting and we were looking forward to a great tour. ( I have studied to a degree level the "Viking Era".)
Problems started immediately:

1. No room in the bus and made to stand!
No security no safety belts. At least 20 of us standing.

2. On arrival one man to receive our payments. Chaos ensued and it took far too long to receive all payments.
One gentleman and his family walked away and took a taxi to leave.

3. Tour was very feeble and with a great lack of knowledge and interest shown by guide.

4. Museum was fine and interesting. However many items on display only in Norwegian. Some also in English. Looks very sloppy and seems to ignore the fact that most people don't speak Norwegian.

5. Return journey total chaos and instead of being, as we were told, going back to town center to continue our time in the town we were forced back to our cruise ship!!! People very angry and upset!

This tour is expensive for what it is. But that is not the main problem. They did not adhere to safety codes. Not friendly to foreigners needs of money exchange or language communication.

This tour with thought, planning and consideration to tourism could be interesting.

If they were a Restaurant, they would be out of customers and with a serious fine by health and safety!

I am sorry to write such a harsh review, but this sort of treatment to tourists paying a high price must stop! Norway is normally better organized and certainly not so poor as to give such an inferior service.

Probably one of the most beautiful spots in the region. The church and it's surrounding areas are nice. The historical center is informative and fun. The Viking farm is an event in itself. Dress for windy weather.

This is one of the best viking experiences in Norway and both the Norvegen Museum, the viking village and the church are important symbols of the rich history of Avaldsnes. Great fun and very interesting.

We happened to visit on the weekend of the festival so there were craftsmen/women at work who demonstrated their different skills. Fascinating site to visit. The History center was excellent - Under the main floor they present a well made film about Norse Viking history followed by a fantastic exhibition of artifacts found at the site. They provide earphones with translations in several languages. The ladies at the History Center were very friendly and helpful.
I am not sure if the bus comes directly to the site, but it was an easy half to one mile walk.
