Owner description: Nordvegen History Centre – one of Norway’s most important areas within national history! For 3000 years chieftains and kings controlled the strait Karmsundet – Nordvegen – the shipping lane that gave Norway its name. At Nordvegen History Centre you can learn about the sovereigns that controlled the coast of Norway from Avaldsnes. Some of them are known from kings’ sagas and old songs. Others are known from archaeology. You will also get a glimpse of the magic world that people once believed to be real. You’ll meet sorcerers, female warriors and Norse gods.At the History Centre we will tell stories using instruments of our own time – it is a grand, informative and very exciting place to visit!Sells local literature, large and small Viking souvenirs. You can also purchase a selection of locally produced goods such as mittens and socks, and creams and soaps made from heather. Nordvegen History Centre also sells Viking jewellery, including Snorre jewellery. The Viking settlement is situated in beautiful natural surroundings on the island of Bukkøy and is accessible on foot with a 10 minute walk from St. Olav's Church. Here it is possible to see and experience how the Vikings lived. Every aspect of the day-to-day life of the Vikings, from work to celebrations including farming, fishing, handicrafts, commerce, art and culture are on display here. Many buildings typical of Viking times are re-constructed using original techniques and of special interest is the granary and round house from the pre-Christian era. The other buildings are replicas from around 900 AD. Adjacent to the settlement is a pier with a capacity for large boats complete with service building including modern toilet facilities. The Viking Hall is also available by private rental for diverse social arrangements.

This is off the beaten path a bit, but full of history! If you want to learn about the Viking era this is the place to visit. It's very English accessible and the scenery is beautiful-- deceptively peaceful for all of the blood shed there hundreds of years ago!

The Nordvegen History Centre itself is interesting enough but probably not worth a separate trip if it weren't for the Vikinggard (Viking Farm) on the nearby island of Bukkøy -- a half hour walk from the History Centre -- and the historic church of St. Olaf that is just a stone's throw away from the History Centre & on the way to the Viking Farm; together, all three make a visit to Avaldsnes really worthwhile, esp. if the weather is nice. The History Centre has some interesting artifacts & they show a brief film that explains Viking life & spirituality quite well, but I found the Viking Farm & St. Olaf's church more interesting. The History Centre took me about an hour (including the short video) & the church can be seen in 10 minutes (it's quite small); you can spend half an hour to an hour at the Viking Farm, depending on how much time you spend with the sword demonstration; with the walk each way, you have to allow two hours for a leisurely visit; you could do it all in an hour and-a-half, but it would probably feel rushed. You can buy tickets for the bus tour (which includes admission to the History Centre) at the tourist info. office in Haugesund & it's about a half hour drive from central Haugesund to the history Centre.

Booked this tour whilst taking our first Fjord cruise on the Aurora and as an introduction to Norway it was perfect!

First stop was the church where we were greeted by our guide in full viking regalia.
His English was superb and I found the history really interesting. Inside the church was beautiful, ornate in places and very peaceful.

After the church it was time to head down the hill and take a short walk to the viking centre where we were shown a short film about the Viking Kings and their roles in Viking history. As an english speaking person you are then handed audio equipment to take you through the rest of the exhibition.

The best part for me was the village which was another walk away past a few norwegian sheep. We got to see some authentic viking dwellings and were educated by another guide (again in costume) on how people lived in that corner of the world hundreds of years ago. We were very lucky on our visit because the sun came out which made for a lovely walk to and from the village.

I would certainly recommend this trip for anyone who loves history and wants to get as close to viking life as is possible in the 21st century.

We were advised to take bus and tour.
We met by the church and all seemed interesting and we were looking forward to a great tour. ( I have studied to a degree level the "Viking Era".)
Problems started immediately:

1. No room in the bus and made to stand!
No security no safety belts. At least 20 of us standing.

2. On arrival one man to receive our payments. Chaos ensued and it took far too long to receive all payments.
One gentleman and his family walked away and took a taxi to leave.

3. Tour was very feeble and with a great lack of knowledge and interest shown by guide.

4. Museum was fine and interesting. However many items on display only in Norwegian. Some also in English. Looks very sloppy and seems to ignore the fact that most people don't speak Norwegian.

5. Return journey total chaos and instead of being, as we were told, going back to town center to continue our time in the town we were forced back to our cruise ship!!! People very angry and upset!

This tour is expensive for what it is. But that is not the main problem. They did not adhere to safety codes. Not friendly to foreigners needs of money exchange or language communication.

This tour with thought, planning and consideration to tourism could be interesting.

If they were a Restaurant, they would be out of customers and with a serious fine by health and safety!

I am sorry to write such a harsh review, but this sort of treatment to tourists paying a high price must stop! Norway is normally better organized and certainly not so poor as to give such an inferior service.

Probably one of the most beautiful spots in the region. The church and it's surrounding areas are nice. The historical center is informative and fun. The Viking farm is an event in itself. Dress for windy weather.
