Best Western Laegreid Hotell
Reviewed 5 July 2011

Owned and operated by the Laegreid family this hotel is located in a quiet area of Sogndal, and while the outside appeal is not great, the inside of the hotel to us is the best Best Western we have ever encountered. Warmly welcomed by Mr. Laegreid, he advised us to forgo a fjord view room, since our arrival coincided with the start of summer school recess, and revelers are expected in the covered outdoor area of the hotel restaurant/pub to sit and talk until very late. He assigned us a 3rd floor room in the back of the hotel, and the room could not have been any quieter or more comfortable, so that we slept until almost 9.a.m., the longest in any hotel in Scandinavia.
Dark wood paneling, dark leather couches and chairs, gilded mirrors, and lots of polished brass in the lobby and seating area give rise to a classy, rich ambiance. Our room was rather large, comfortably spacious, and elegantly furnished. As to be expected from a Best Western hotel, the room was appointed with all one needs for a comfortable stay. The room and the tidy bath with a glass enclosed shower were spotless. Leather wingback chairs were without doubt the most comfortable seating we found in any hotel room, including in 5-star facilities in Scandinavia.
Dinner prepared by Mrs. Laegreid was delicious. The breakfast buffet offered the typical Scandinavian spread and certainly satisfied our desires. Being limited in accommodations to only 40 rooms, this hotel is spared the loud presence of bus tour groups. The owners are very concerned for guests to have a nice stay in their hotel and Sogndal, and they patiently dispense information about the town and farther afield. A computer terminal/printer station in the lobby is free for guest use. Free parking is available in front of the hotel. Being centrally located, shops, supermarket, postal counter, and tourist information are all within a few minutes walk. All in all, the Laegreid Best Western proved to be a great place to stay for a few days while exploring the area. Solvorn, the Urnes stave church, and glaciers are all within a reasonable driving distance.

We stayed here for only one night and wished it had been much longer. We were warmly greeted by the owner(?) and shown to our room. It had the loveliest view of the fjord and mountains. The room was very large with a nice desk, cabinetry for hanging, storage and suitcases and two wing back chairs. I moved mine immediately in front of the window! The bathroom was large with an enclosed shower!

We had dinner at the hotel buffet which was huge and tasty. I complimented the owner on the food later and he said "It's just normal home cooking." I could have had more. There is a separate bar area with a pretty outdoor seating area too. The hotel is on the edge of the downtown and quiet. We took a long walk after dinner to look at the surrounding private homes.

Breakfast and wifi both were great.

The Best Western in Sogndal is a clean, well-run facility and provides a very convenient springboard for access to differing eco-tourist attractions as well as the university there.

We arrived at Sogndal's airport via Wideroe airlines [the only carrier to this airport]. The fjord views are breathtaking both on landing and takeoff. Once disembarking, one goes through the small airport lobby to a waiting airport shuttle -- it's the only bus there and coordinates with the arriving aircraft. One pays the driver on the bus [credit cards accepted]. The trip from Sogndal airport to the bus terminal [sit on the right side to see wonderful glimpses of the fjord early in the trip; on the way back, sit on the right to see beautiful views closer to Sogndal] takes about 20 minutes to get to the central bus terminal in Sogndal.

En route, on the left in town you'll see a lot of hotels. This is where the Best Western is located. Perhaps the most obvious hotel sign is the Quality Inn. From the bus terminal, head in the direction of the Quality Inn sign and follow the main road in the direction back to where the bus came from; on the right about three blocks up you'll see a right turn -- that's the street on which the Best Western is located.

Upon finding the hotel, enter the lobby. It's a darker lobby but still warm and friendly, with a sitting area on the right as you walk in with a TV, and a larger lounge just beyond it. The left area is where you'll find the breakfast area [breakfast is included with all room rates] and reception.

We arrived at around 2:30 pm and were checked in and given a room right away. We requested a room that had a view of the fjord, and the young man checking us in said he would give us one 'he thought'. His thinking was correct, and we were given room 322 -- one of two large rooms at the end of the hotel with a view of the fjord over the rooftops. A very pleasant room indeed, and worth requesting.

The room itself included Internet access, both wifi and cabled [which is faster], a sitting area [large, with a leather loveseat and separate single seat], table, and wine glasses. Bathroom had only a shower, but had wonderfully heated floors, which were a tremendous and recurring pleasure each time we stepped on them. Note: if you require special shampoo, bring your own because the hotel appears to only provide body gel dispensers.

All hotels in Norway are nonsmoking, but there was a smoking balcony at the other end of the hall if this is your thing.

Breakfast was very nice, although only cold offerings and fresh breads [with the exception of hard and soft boiled eggs]. However, it seemed to be the standard practice that folks would make sandwiches to go for lunch, so do this to avoid having to pay the exorbitant prices associated with restaurant meals in Norway [e.g., US$50 for a coke and pizza]. There is a bar, but again, with the prices of alcohol and food, things are quite pricey.

The hotel staff was uniformly pleasant, and we liked the fact that the rooms were made up early [by noon] each of the four days we were here.

One problem we encountered was that our card keys apparently only lasted 24 hours. Each day we'd have to get new keys issued to us.

Finally, as befits a non-business-focused hotel, safes were not standard in the rooms. However, we did employ the hotel's without a problem.

The hotel is in very close proximity to key things in Sogndal: the bus terminal [where all the key transport for tourist activities such as the glacier transport and related activities, regular transport to the University, airport bus, etc.], two grocery stores [key to keep food costs down -- try Remi, which has hot food to go, including meatballs, chicken wings, whole chickens, etc.], and the tourist information office.

One other aspect we liked about the Best Western is that it does cater to an older population. Other hotels in Sogndal focus on backpackers and students. We believe that either population might not be happy in the other's quarters, so this may be a factor of importance to some.

Overall, wonderful, convenient hotel for excursions to the glacier, fjords, and other nature-based activities as well as the University. We would definitely stay here again.

The Laegreid was an above average BW. We had a beautifully appointed room. It was a nice size, perfectly clean and very comfortable. The hotel lobby was very pretty, a nice place to sit, and the bar / restaurant attached were both excellent. There's free internet / parking here. Apparently the wi-fi doesn't work too well, but it worked in our room.

The staff was great. They were great locals who had a lot of useful advice, esp. re driving.

The steak at the restaurant was very good. The fried chicken bits were... fried chicken bits... good, but not really apropos for visiting Sogndal. The breakfast buffet was good, not great.

I would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at this hotel once before back in 2003 and remembered I liked it - I had stayed at quite a few hotels all over Norway at the time. It is the cheaper one of the 2 major hotels in Sogndal (the Quality hotel being the more expensive one). I walked into my room and found a few dead flies on the floor but forgetting about that it was a nice room. Wooden floors, leather chair and I arrived to find the heaters were on which was great as it had been freezing outside. There is free internet access in most rooms (maybe all?) and you can access it through the TV with a keyboard. I remembered finding it very useful last time. When I tried it, the TV had an error message. I told someone about it at reception and they had someone come up and fix it straight away! When I went back later it was working. They were doing renovations on the first floor and apologised for the noise. It didn't disturb me as it was only for a few hours in the afternoon. The staff were friendly and helpful. I remember in 2003 I had been in a rush to checkout and there hadn't been anyone at reception to serve me. This was not the case this time. Also there is a pub/restaurant next door, accessible through the hotel. The hotel is centrally located - just a few minutes walk from the main street and the same for the central bus station. I would stay here again.
