We decided to stop over in Geilo on our way to Bergen from Oslo and spend two nights. We did not rent a car, but rather walked to the summer park from the hotel and then took the ski lift up the mountain and went hiking. There are miles of hiking trails at the top, and they are incredibly beautiful - amazing scenery and fauna. We then walked down the mountain and went in to town to have lunch - in all about 10 miles. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend this to folks who are in good shape. You can also take the ski lift down.
There were families on the mountain who had rented mountain bikes and took them up the mountain. It looked like a blast and if we had time we would have done that too. We also plan to walk around the lake (2 hours) which is at the foot of the park. It is worth stopping in Geilo if you want to experience the mountain towns.
