Description: A dining experience can be cherished most if the ambience is realistic, service is impeccable and above all the ingredients used in food are fresh and handpicked. Our cuisine is based on the regions of South India and particular focus given to Kerala. The region Kerala is located at the southern tip of India and through the centuries past, many have travelled to Kerala for the richness in spices produced over here.Kerala is identified as one of the 50 must see destinations of the world by the national geographical traveller and we the people from backwaters are here to celebrate this honour with our aromatic authentic signature cuisine. Our unique style in presentation of food is well appreciated by most of our diners and many praises to the pictures displayed in our walls taken by a well-known ecologist makes this experience of dining in Backwaters truly special. The restaurant offers a wide range of starters like fish croquettes and Tiger prawns marinated in southern Indian spices and pan fried; served with coconut sauce and spicy kokum (kokum is native fruit to the western coastal regions of southern India). Our main course includes 3 kinds of platters (seafood, meat and vegetable) and apart from these one of our chicken based dishes called ‘kozhi varutharachy curry ‘is a mouth-watering hot and spicy chicken prepared with roasted coconut and grinded with handpicked spices which make it a distinctly flavoured dish and is served with steamed basmati rice. The perfect way to end a memorable evening at the Restaurant is chef’s recommendation of dessert called Backwaters halwa which consists of two kinds of pudding made of semolina and alphonso mango, served with a scoop of ice cream.

“Great food ... we were in for a surprise :)”

We visited this restaurant with another couple, and I must say we had a wonderful time there. Being a South Indian and having tried other South Indian restaurants in and around Newcastle, Backwaters is authentic and did remind us of ‘home’. Anyone wishing to try new food must visit this place.

However on the downside, the food was served late – though they did make this up with complimentary starters. And I felt the food was a bit on the pricey side.

But overall great experience. We will definitely visit this place again.

Great job, Backwaters! Most people in England have tried North Indian cuisine and I am glad we now have a place offering decent South Indian cuisine worth talking about. Keep it going and thanks!

“Fantastic Food, Fantastic Value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2012

We had a Groupon voucher and booked on -line as per instructions. No problems at all.
We originally booked for 6pm as we had tickets for a show at the Empire Theatre, however this was cancelled. Only downside to the evening was that the service was a little slow and had we been going to the Theatre it would have been a rush as we didn't get out of the restaurant until 7.25pm.
Having said that the food was fabulous. No Korma, Bhuna, Rogan Josh on the menu but gorgeously flavoured different dishes as other reviews have said authentic Indian food.
Yes it was quite quiet but it was early on a Tuesday evening and its situated in a part of town away from most of the bars. But we will return as the quality of the food was so good.
Well done!

“Very tasty and a little different”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2012 via mobile

We've been here a couple of times and would recommend to to anyone wanting to try something wanting to try something a little different. The staff were friendly and recommended dishes to us, if your not a fan of spicy food though I would ask before ordering as some of it can be very hot! The restaurant could do with updating but don't let it put you off as the food is worth it.

“Excellent Food Cooked with passion and amazing authentic Indian Ingredients !!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2012

My Friends and I decided to visit this restaurant today as we were always excited about trying new authentic Indian cuisine and after visiting Backwaters, we found that the level of Customer Service and passion with which the food was cooked made our evening even more special. I do not understand the reason behind negative comments as everything was just perfect and would blindly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is fond of tasting new authentic Indian cuisine.

“Excellent Food and Service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

Visited this restaurant for the first time with family and friends for Sunday lunch using a Groupon voucher and was very impressed. This is not your standard indian menu and the staff explained the dishes to help us make our choices. We had a young baby with us who needed feeding when we were there and the staff were very helpful in heating up his food and providing a high chair. If you are in Sunderland I would recommend giving this restaurant a try and I will be dining there again.
