I visited this pub on a pub crawl of Sunderland. There was a large selection of beers from independent breweries and in great condition. Local pamphlets on ale trails and brewery news are available. Both the barman and the locals were friendly and were happy to give information on the area and directions. Superb!!

Our cousin was visiting from New Zealand and wanted to visit old haunts, and in the olden days the 'Ship Isis' was at the bottom of what we called the ski-run from Hylton Road, loads of pubs and you would zig-zag all the way down. This was the last pub before going into the town centre. We had heard it had been refurbished, however there is a big difference in some pubs when they say 'refurbished'. What a revelation this pub is. A total make over. Everything in it was to the highest standard - even down to the glasses you drink was placed in. The staff were friendly and welcoming. There was a birthday function upstairs, but it didn't deter or spoil anything going on downstairs. Loads of 'ales' to try along with standard drinks. A bulb went out in one of the lights above the bar, this was fixed in an instant with no fuss to customers. Tables were cleared frequently and every member of staff was busy doing something, either serving or clearing etc, but not in an obtrusive way. A shining example of getting everything right, decor, staff, atmosphere and city central.

This is an excellent pub and gives a reason to return to going in to Sunderland City Centre for a drink. Good atmosphere, comfortable, friendly and an excellent range of beers. When arranging any celebratory night out or just wanting to meet friends for a drink and natter - first choice is The Isis. Can compete with anything Newcastle has to offer!!
