Been a couple of times for a bar meal. Portions are absolutely huge - definitely get your moneys worth! Also worth noting that they do 'proper' chips here -none of the anaemic oven stuff that so many other pubs seem to do. Friendly staff, good beer, great food - what more could you want :-)

Lovely bar staff, fabulous food and very reasonably priced. Much better than some of the so called top restaurants in Sunderland. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The Wolsey is a traditional, small pub perfectly situated on route to the sea front (only a five minute walk to beach). Staff are very friendly and help create a very welcome atmosphere. Given the modest size it still manages to pack in a kitchen, great beer garden and a proper fire (perfect for those cold nights). The pub is very family friendly but its also a top place for adult groups or the quiet drink with your partner. A good selection of real ales (guest ales each week) and reasonably priced wines. Food is excellent and there's a decent choice of both hot and cold meals, plus a very good carvery (under a fiver at last check). Landlord has really transformed the pub over the last few years and its a al credit to him and his staff. Friendly local atmosphere and welcoming to non locals (and is very student friendly). There's a quiz night on Thursday and while the hardened quizzers (who only seem to appear on quiz night) may seem to take it all a bit too seriously and are rather territorial when it comes to 'their' usual tables, there's still a fairly relaxed mood for the less dedicated quizzers.
There are large screen TVs for the usual sporting events (if that's your thing) but they don't dominate and are rarely too loud so you can go to the pub for a chat (a rare thing in some pubs in Sunderland). There's also a pool table!
The beer garden comes alive in the Summer and really gives The Wolsey much needed space. It's by far one of the most hospitable pubs in Sunderland and a real gem. Great at lunch time for those looking for a bite to eat (they serve all day until 9pm) and brilliant throughout the week. Truly holds its own amongst the pubs in the Roker area. Highly recommended.

Drove past the place many times so decided to pop in for Sunday carvery. The food was amazing, proper roast tatties and meat was beautifully cooked. The only thing that let the experience down was the lack of space and table arrangement inside. I got bumped into three times while trying to eat and couldnt get out of the pub without disturbing other diners.
Overall the carvery is the best Ive had just a shame about the cramped tables indoors. Will still be returning though!

Stumbled across this pub and thought we would nip in for a drink, saw food being served and thought we'd try it.. Half a chicken and chips (real ones) served with coleslaw and salad in a basket for £5.95, it was excellent! Highly recommend...
