We have had an apartment since they opened, at that time it was called Eden bay, we changed our week to later in the year and also upgraded from a studio to one bedroomed sleep 4 apartment. The Intercontinental hotel is a very busy hotel, but we have always been pleased with attention from staff. It is on a busy road and in an area that is increasingly getting busier, popular with young people, so much so that going out at anytime can be difficult to get through the crowds, but at night even more so, especially if you use the steps to get into the town area for more restaurants. It is noisy and busy, yes, but I have never felt threatened by the crowds. People are enjoying themselves. This noise and music from clubs can be loud and if you sit out on your balcony at night might be annoying, although I enjoyed listening to the music from one of the Intercontinental bars one evening.
Many people criticise the way you have to go up to floor 7 and the walk along a dark corridor to reach a lift to get to your apartment, a strange thing which has never really bothered us until the lift played up and then we had to use the stairs which are also the fire exit and not at all well lit. The Intercontinental were working on the problem but didn't put up notices to explain the problem which would have been helpful, had I had my sister in law with us she would have been unable to use the stairs and so trapped.
The apartment has lost some features over the years, and I agree that the furniture isn't as good as it looked at the start, but that is because some people don't treat the furniture with care. Diamond resorts don't keep the information up to date, one nearby supermarket listed has been closed sometime and another building there now! There was another one nearer but not even listed.
The Intercontinental has a selection of restaurants, the food is usually very good although expensive. We didn't see any Diamond Resort staff to speak to, although heard them doing the hard sell to people from outside their office, sound carries up! We have been exchanging recently due to family commitments and found May difficult to go until this year, I admit I was a little disappointed and much preferred our exchange to another part of Malta.
The maid service was good, the apartment clean and the bed comfortable. The pool on top of the hotel is super with plenty of sunbeds and towels free of charge and you can also use the beach area if you like the sea and sand better. Our apartment looked out to an oasis of calm with waterfalls, ponds with fish and turtles and flowers and plants, although the path got busy at times with people going to the leisure centre!

If you go here do remember it is a busy area.

Room Tip: Studio rooms overlook road, chose a 1 or 2 bedroomed apartment.

Horrible. Bolted onto the side of the Intercontinental Hotel Malta, which claims to be a 5 star but I can't see how. It seems to market itself as being in St Julian's but is actually most definitely in St George's Bay and therefore Paceville, a very different area altogether. The outdoor pool and sundeck was lovely, if windy, but the food up there was of the oven chip and limp lettuce variety. The supercilious, sexist and pompous Intercontinental reception staff were reluctant to help as we were 'timeshare' clients. It took a battle of wills to get them to send their maintenance staff without our having to wait overnight for the Diamond employee to come in, as that seemed to be receptions' standard response to avoid doing anything themselves. We had requested twin rooms as we were a party of 4 ladies but one of the rooms had been made up as a double. The phones didn't work so we went all the way back to reception to request that the phones be fixed and that the double bed be separated into twin ones. The man on reception began by saying that we had to wait until the following morning for the Diamond employee; then that all the beds in the building were doubles and so couldn't be separated, which was odd as one of our rooms was already a twin one, and finally that we'd be alright sharing for a night. When I spelt out that we weren't lesbian couples and so it was wrong that he expected us to share a bed even for one night he was shocked into action and managed to force himself to send housekeeping to separate them into twin beds, which had clearly been possible all along. The phones were swapped for ones that worked, presumably with ones from other rooms until someone in them noticed and complained too. The only time we asked the Consierge and Doorman for any information they told us the wrong thing, resulting in our standing for an extra 3 hours in Valletta to wait for the underwhelming 'International' Firework 'Festival' as we stupidly believed that they knew what they were talking about. Admin for Diamond Resorts is done in Italy, although there is apparently a member of staff in the hotel during the mornings. Our room was odd. It had a vast number of empty kitchen cupboards with a basic starter pack of flatware and cutlery etc in a couple of them. There were also pillars taking up most of the living area resulting in there only being a corridor shaped area for the sofa(bed) and one hard 'armchair'. Bedding was blissfully soft - the only plus point. Lampshades in the bedroom were dirty. I didn't dare look under the bed or anywhere else in detail. Bath had a hole at the bottom that had been effectively if not prettily stopped up with filler. We were put on the bottom floor of the timeshare section so we looked up into a racked garden and had little natural light and felt like we were living in a cave. Regarding caves; the parking is in a separately owned subterranean series of dark, concrete, catacombs and costs 9 Euros a night. The Diamond Suites (apartments; I can't bring myself to call them suites) are reached along miles of corridors and via a separate lift, which is annoying. The resort. Well, where to start. The hotel is on a grubby, hilly, street full of bars, shops and traffic and is a few feet away from what we nicknamed "The Steps of Shame", a foul, unpleasant, area of Gentlemen's Clubs, bars, shisha pipes and scantily clad girls binge drinking themselves into the arms of cocksure binge drinking lads and, presumably, ending up the night mating against the bins in the side alleys, watched by the dozens of stray cats prowling around. Nasty is the only word for it. The clubs bang on until 1 am, so bring ear plugs if you're on the lower floors, as we were, or facing the road. The restaurants mean that the corridors in the Diamond Suites section smell more and more strongly of fried chicken and rancid fat as the evening progresses. The only advantage to the evenings in the streets is that it gets dark and you can't see the grime as clearly. There is a 'mall' across the street with an M&S Food Shop but you might as well put a silver coin in a turd for all the good that it does to the area.

Room Tip: If you still even think of going here, (and why would you?), ask for a top floor room and bring ear plugs.

Having stayed in Diamond Resorts at various locations around the world, this was definitely our worst experience and nothing like the standard we have been used to. We were forewarned about the noise and, therefore, requested (in advance) a high floor to try and reduce the impact of some of it. On checking in, we were disappointed to find that we had been allocated a room on the lowest floor possible. However, we were pleasantly surprised when we entered our room to find that we were facing the gardens and there was very little noise penetration. However, our happiness was short-lived as on the Monday morning we were awoken before 8am by the sound of drilling and hammering coming from somewhere close by. We hoped that this was a one-off but sadly that was not the case. The following morning when the hammering started even earlier, we rang reception to complain but were advised that no work was being carried out in the hotel. We spoke to the on-site Diamond Resorts representative who simply advised that work could be carried out from 7.30am. He made no offer to try to arrange for us to have a different room even though we later learned that there was availability. Every morning during our stay we were woken before 8am by the sound of hammering and this continued into the early evening on more than one occasion. It took us until two days before we came home to discover the source of the noise. It transpires that the rooms on Level 5 are located over a number of retail outlets and we had the misfortune to be in a room directly above a shop that was undergoing refurbishment. Whilst I appreciate that Diamond Resorts could have no control over such activity, I do believe they could have and should have done something to improve our holiday experience as soon as it was drawn to their attention. In addition, we found the suites were shabby and in need of refurbishment. There was a persistent smell of fried food in the corridor on which our room was located; whenever the air conditioning/heating kicked in a smell of stale cigarette smoke was emitted from it; the shower in the main bathroom could not be used as the shower head holder was broken; the hairdryer was held together with a piece of insulating tape; the shower mat was mouldy; the microwave was broken - and the list could go on. The only positive thing I can say about the suite was that the level of cleanliness was very good. I appreciate that I have gone on at some length in a negative vein but I am trying to give an honest representation of our experience to ensure that other visitors to this resort understand what they may have to contend with.

Room Tip: Don't let them allocate you a room on level 5.

We regret to read about your disappointment; we believe this issue was being addressed by our Customer Service team, who advised that unfortunately Hotel InterContinental is not fully managed by Diamond Resorts as we only own a number of apartments. However, we do have our team on site who will always do their best to address any issues which may be brought to their attention and ensure that our guests have a great stay. We regret to read that it appears on this occasion it was not so, although we were under an impression that at the point of contact with our Representative it was never mentioned that you may have had any noise related issues within your accommodation. We always encourage our guests to voice their concerns as soon as possible, so that we can start working towards ensuring that they may enjoy a great stay. We regret if we were not given the opportunity on this occasion. We wish you all the best on your future travels.

We recently got back from a great week in Malta, staying at the Diamond Resort at the Intercontinental Hotel. Firstly, don't pay too much attention to complaints on here about having to take 2 lifts to get to the Diamond rooms, or about noisy cars at night - it takes 2 minutes, and what do you expect for a huge resort in the centre of a busy town? The hotel itself is fantastic - helpful staff, great location, and the pool and turkish baths are brilliant. We stayed on the sixth floor with a balcony overlooking the courtyard and found the accommodation to be of a really nice standard.

Our only complaint is that we were woken up at 7.30am every day by the noise of renovation work that Diamond are currently carrying out in the resort. We knew in advance that there would be the potential of some disruption as it's low-season, however 7.30am in our view was inconsiderately early. The Intercontinental staff were great - they sent three different individuals to respond to our complaints, who each agreed that the noise was unacceptable. Interestingly, they weren't even aware that Diamond had renovations going on in the building! The response we got from the Diamond staff when we complained was a distinctly unapologetic 'There's nothing we can do - you were warned.' If you're going anytime soon, bring earplugs and don't expect a nice lie-in!

Finally, we also had a consistent smell of cigarette smoke in our room despite neither ourselves or either of our neighbours being smokers. The cleaner was baffled, as were the Intercontinental staff who came up to have a look. A mystery!

All in all - it's a lovely place to stay, but perhaps check in advance as to whether the renovation work is on-going.

After reading some of the reviews we had some misgivings about booking here but were pleasantly surprised. Maybe we were lucky to get a refurbished apartment. Having to take two lifts with a walk in between is a bit strange but all in all our stay was very good. The accommodation is spacious and the Intercontinental has very good facilities although I have to say we didn't use any of them! The garden and outdoor pool areas are very nice but the weather wasn't really good enough for sunbathing. We were there over the New Year but were not troubled by revellers at all - the only sound that got a bit annoying was the Christmas CD on continuous loop at the bowling alley opposite. Paceville is very lively and downmarket but there are nice restaurants in a pretty setting at Spinola Bay which is only 10 minutes walk. Excellent island bus service though crowded at times. Loads of things to see in Malta whatever the weather.

Room Tip: Overlooking the garden would be nice and can imagine the rooms overlooking the road would be noisy at high season.
