“Diamond Suites lack sparkle”

Diamond Resorts have some apartments within the Intercontinental Hotel at St. Juliens. We stayed there for 2 weeks in May 2014. St. Juliens is a very noisy area and in hindsight maybe we should have taken heed of some of the reviews prior to departure! But the Intercon Hotel staff were really pleasant and very helpful, even though staying at a Diamond Resort we were not really their guests. I guess the main downside was the apartment was a bit disappointing both in layout and design. The electrical units and sockets (see my photo) have to be seen to be believed!!!! We could get wifi as long as you went out onto the balcony. As other reviewers have mentioned it's quite a trek to get the the apartments requiring at least 2 different lifts. The aircon chucked out a lot of dust/dirt, I ended up with a hacking cough which may or may not have been caused by the aircon.
We enjoyed our holiday but no way near as good as other resorts we have stayed at such as Tenerife. As for Malta itself I think they are suffering from post EU blues. Strikes me they regret joining the EU and certainly regret joining the Euro. Due to the lousy exchange rate they got at the time of joining they lost 35% of their wealth.
Had some fabulous meals in Malta but it ain't cheap!

Room Tip: Get a ground floor aparment that face away from the main streets. St Juliens is a clubbing area and...

This Diamond Resort is not the same high standard as those in the Canaries! Neither is it up to the standard of the Intercontinental Hotel! The apartments are spacious and reasonably well-equipped but the furniture is rather old and the apartments quite dark. The apartments are reached via a labyrinth of corridors and, for those on the lower floors, 2 elevators! We were fortunate to have an apartment on the 7th floor, overlooking the garden; sitting on our balcony, listening to the waterfall and watching the fish and turtles was very pleasant and relaxing. Our friends' apartment overlooked the road - they sat on their balcony listening to continual building work, screeching tyres and pounding 'music'! Paceville is a horrible area - full of bars and 'gentlemen's' clubs - we opted to walk the long way round to reach Spinola Bay, rather than 'run the Gauntlet' of the steps up to the main road. I cannot understand why the Intercontinental Hotel / Diamond Suites chose this area! The hotel has it's own beach - crowded, noisy and also engulfed by loud music and the smell of cooking oil. We opted to relax by the hotel's rooftop pool, which was far more pleasant - plenty of sunbeds, free towels and a bar service (although the food here was disappointing and the drinks prices higher than in their own restaurants!) Further criticisms of the apartments include the TV reception (poor! - and only 2 English channels) and the smelly air-conditioning! Service / facilities in the hotel, however, 'saved' our holiday; we did feel that we were treated rather as 'the poor relation' by the Reception staff, however, the Concierge were very friendly and helpful (particularly Luis). The pool area was lovely and gym very well-equipped. We also had a fantastic meal in the Waterbiscuit restaurant. The Paranga (buffet) restaurant was also good value for money, although Diamond Resorts clients no longer receive a discount to eat in the hotels' restaurants.

Room Tip: Rooms on the road side are VERY noisy!

This was our second visit to this diamond resort, and although a few years ago there has been little in the way of updating to the apartments. However the apartments were very clean, comfortable and well equipped, but don't expect the same quality of apartments as in other Diamond Resorts i.e. the Canaries. We did meet Wendy and Sean in the Diamond office, who were most helpful and did not (as in some other resorts) want to push more sales to us. ALL the staff at the Intercontinental Hotel were helpful. friendly and very caring. The pool area was lovely. We had a room on the 9th floor, on the inner circle facing the gardens which was very nice and quiet. However, the area outside the hotel/diamond resort is very lively & noisy, and very much a haven for the younger age group! We did eat in the hotel restaurants but not very often (Diamond guests don't now get a discount as previously) as there were plenty of good, reasonable places to eat either in St George's Bay & Spinola Bay areas.

The room we stayed in when we first arrived had four filthy pillows so i would advise checking them when you arrive the light on the hob never worked so could not see if on or off very bad as you could easily burn yourself not knowing it was on there is no extractor fan so when you cook you fill the room with cooking smells the two lamps in our room where disgusting we complained and we were told it had been reported before but the lamps were still there and were when we left so if you are in room 672 be warned had no problem with the noise at the front of the hotel as the double glazing keeps the noise out although the lock on our door never worked and was broken so just had a safety clip like lock which we didnt think was very good the intercontinental staff our very good do everything they can to help you we would stay there again but not with diamond resorts

If this were not a Diamond affiliate, I'm sure there would be some updating of the outdoor furniture. Overall improvements are however taking place. We having been coming for four years to the one bedroomed apartments and love it. The kitchens are fully equipped and if you need something then just ask the maid. We find the Diamond office most helpful and we are not obligated to listen to sales chat, although glad to have bought more timeshare over the years. In respect of limited television choice, then this is no different to current restraints in southern European countries and the Canaries.

I read many feedbacks on the Diamond Suites before going in May and was a bit worried to be honest. However, on arrival we were escorted to the apartment, and yes you do need to go across a landing to another lift to get to the upper floors, but it is not that bad. We had an apartment overlooking the garden on the 8th floor.I would think that sheilded us from a lot of the noise from the street. The area around the hotel is lively with shops and nightclubs, but we heard nothing once in the apartment. The staff of the Intercontinental were helpful and polite. We were treated no differently to people staying as Intercontinental guests, which I know was raised by one traveller. The beach owned by the hotel was disappointing. It was very small and the music was awful.
The apartment was clean, although the furniture is looking a little the worse for wear. Bed was really comfortable though. Cleaning staff were thorough and very polite.
We had minor issues when we were there, but the staff dealt with them very quickly and to our satisfaction.
Laundry is a problem, there is no where at the hotel to do laundry nor any launderettes nearby. We did find a little place that would do the laundry for you at 6 Euro for 5kgs. Would rather do my own to be honest. As with most hotels they do not want you hanging laundry on the balcony, I can understand this, however would a small laundry rack really be a problem?
Most of the Diamond resorts have either a washing machine or laundry room, I think Diamond need to consider the installation of a laundry room at the resort. Even if it is a payable machine.
Malta was great, we walked everywhere even though we rented a car. Would recommend not hiring a car and using the buses. Really cheap. The hop on and off bus was good value and I think we saw more that we would if left to our own devices.
The staff at the Intercontinental were really helpful with information on how to get around, the best places to eat and what to do and see.
In particular a member of staff called Andrew, not sure on his position but he helped us to the room with our bags, seek him out, he is a star, really helpful.

All in all, was a great place to stay, yes some of the furniture needs a bit of TLC, and I would assume that if you had a room facing the road it MAY be noisy, can't comment too much did not stay in them.
I would say take the plunge,

Room Tip: Try and get on that faces the garden.

At a Diamond resorts we normally expect to find 5 star accommodation but unfortunately our recent stay at the intercontinental could not be described as that good. Although the 2 bed unit was spacious with a large balcony that overlooked the garden behind the hotel, the furniture and fittings were showing signs of wear and were grubby. Getting to the rooms involved a long hike through a labyrinth of corridors and 2 trips in lifts which although being OK for us, would be a pain for anyone who had any mobility problems. The TV only had 2 British channels (BBC world news & sky sports news) And only one of the bedrooms had a clock in it. We were also subject to the usual gestapo tactics by Diamond reps trying to part us from more money with their latest scheme. But on the bright side, at least we were on the right side of the hotel. If we had been in a 1 bed unit we would have been on the street side with all the traffic noise as some of the other guests that we spoke to were having to endure. We could not fault the hotel staff or quality of the food in the on site restaurants. We also enjoyed time spent in and around the rooftop pool.

Room Tip: Rooms on the inside facing the gardens a significantly quieter and have a better outlook then the on...
