“Setting High Standards”
Reviewed 2 March 2012

The Malta Hilton is part of a large-scale redevelopment of a formerly run-down area on the coat between the the Paceville ‘entertainment’ district and the rather more sedate Spinola Bay & St Julians, and the result appears to be entirely successful. The proximity of these bustling districts means that there is always something to see or do a short walk away if life in the hotel becomes tiring. The hotel exudes an air of sophisticated luxury with good facilities and attentive (sometimes a little over-attentive!) staff. There are several good restaurants with reasonable (in the context of a five-star hotel) prices; perhaps the presence of literally dozens of restaurants in the neighbourhood helps ‘keep them honest’. The buffet breakfast is varied and plentiful.

The hotel is a somewhat erratic shape, following the contours of the water’s edge, and the internal signage is inadequate, with pointless excursions up dead-end corridors inevitable. Rooms are well furnished, although style does occasionally triumph over substance, pace the low-backed leather-clad arm chairs to be found in the bedrooms (at least on the executive floor) which look wonderful but which offer no back support whatsoever and which become grossly uncomfortable after only a few minutes use. Rooms on the executive floor have access to the executive lounge, the facilities of which are well worth paying a bit extra for.

Our visit coincided with a change of the hotel’s computer systems, which was apparently to be blamed for a number of service delivery failures that we encountered. Every day we heard several times the same refrain; usually over small considerations such as the non-delivery of our morning newspaper, but the cumulative effect became somewhat wearisome. It was some small consolation that for the same reason we were slightly undercharged departure, with the staff writing off some odd entries in their accounting system after spending fully half-an-hour trying (and failing) to make sense of them.

The hotel’s Wi-Fi service is atrocious with connections constantly dropping out and requiring a complex log-on to re-establish a connection. Even without a complete disconnection any connection that depends streaming (for example, a connection to a VPN) last no longer than a few minutes before lapsing. BlackBerries are simply unusable. It is unfortunate that no Ethernet alternative is provided.

Guests of the Hilton can make free use of the development’s underground car park, using any part of the public areas of the car park. There is also a sectioned-off area of the car park that is reserved for the Hilton’s guests – but the means of accessing it appears to be a closely-guarded secret and when the secret is revealed it involves parting with a € 50.00 deposit – a surprising stratagem for giving ‘free’ access to the car park. Perhaps unsurprisingly, hardly any cars are to be seen in the Hilton’s reserved section.

These grumbles should not detract from the fact that this is well-run luxury hotel which can be commended (almost) unreservedly – especially when they are not changing computer systems.

Room Tip: Sea view nice; executive floor worth having

This was my first visit to Malta and the few days I had at the Hilton were exceptional. Staff were very friendly and extremely helpful and the room was very large and modern - the bathroom was possibly a little over the top in size, but no complaints! As it was January the hotel was quiet but I can imagine it must be buzzing in the peak times in summer. I only used the breakfast area out of the restaurants available and this was excellent - all tastes and requirements catered for and was excellently positioned with a view to the pool area outside and the sea beyond. Definitely a place to go out of peak times if you are looking for a top quality place to stay in Malta.

We stayed at the Hilton Malta for one week commencing the 14th February.

We had booked two sea view rooms, and both were beautiful rooms, very clean with a wonderful bathroom and massive bed. The rooms were slightly different, ours(851) had underfloor heating in the bathroom, twin sinks and a long bath tub, huge shower room and an obstructed sea view. The balcony was always in the shade. Our companions room(760) had a better view with a sunny balcony, but no underfloor heating and a round bath tub which they found a bit small to use.

All of the staff were extremely friendly and very helpful. Customer service in all areas was exceptional.

As it was the winter season not all of the restaurants were open, we were on half board, and never went hungry.
The Oceana restaurant for breakfast and dinner were faultless., so much choice and superb quality.
We also had a fantastic fillet steak in the Bottega del Vino.
The meal in the Blue Elephant was very good, but beware of the soup in the banquet meal., even the mild soup was making everyone cough and sneeze! The actual restaurant is so pretty. Orchids everywhere, a little waterfall, a pool and goldfish. It has a very intimate atmosphere and well worth paying the extra if on half board.

Outside of the hotel we used the Hop on Hop off bus to explore the North of the Island. It was
an excellent way to get around. The tickets include a free two harbour cruise, and for 15 euros total was excellent value. The tour can be taken on a different day and transport is provided one way.
The Hop on Hop on Bus is also available on Gozo, we booked this and we were picked up from our hotel and taken to the ferry. The ferry costs just under 5 euros per person. We thought 20 euros per person was very good value for a day out.

We also used local buses, very easy to use and 2.60 euros for a day rider.

We would highly recommend this hotel, and would stay there again on a return trip to Malta without hesitation.

Room Tip: Ask for a sunny balcony, avoid the inner corners in the new block

Stayed at this hotel last week.
Wonderful area, walking distance from restaurants bars etc but far enough to be nice and quiet. Had a peaceful room overlooking the marina, very relaxing.
Overcomplete breakfast with champagne and all very very nice, gym, pool all to standard!

Room Tip: think all rooms are good, sea view is ofcourse nice but can be windy...

We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights in Feb 2012 and it's one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. We would definately return. From the outset, the staff were friendly, pleasant efficient, helpful and quick to respond to any request. Our room was gorgeous - we booked an executive king size - it had a balcony, sea view, lovely large bathroom and was really nicely laid out. Bed was firm - which is not our favourite, but that's just us. Travel sized smellies were supplied and topped up every day, and the cleaner (though we never saw him/her) did a fantastic job. Booking an 'executive room' meant breakfast was included and we had complete access to the 'executive lounge' with drinks available all day and snacks at tea time and pre-dinner. All very nice, and with lovely friendly staff on hand too. The breakfast was lovely - served in a sunny space, with everything you could possibly want and always a friendly word from Stuart the egg chef. We ate in most areas - the Vista lobby bar (best Hilton burger ever!), the Oceana buffet restaurant and the Blue elephant - all were lovely. We enjoyed some lovely spa treatments - the 'couples package' was a really good deal and each treatment and member of staff that we met in the spa were fantastic. Plenty of parking available in the multi-storey, and this was free too. There are shops in the lobby, and we found that the prices were fair, and of course the staff were excellent. The only things we didn't really use were the mini-bar in our room because the prices we thought were over the top, and the 'pay tv' - 15 Euros to watch 'Back to the future' which is 27 years old or 'Forest Gump' at 18 years old seemed completely ridiculous. Newer films were available, but we thought that these 'golden oldies' should have been free to watch, particularly as the number of channels per language is fairly limited. If the 'pay TV' and the mini bar had been more reasonably priced, we would have used them. The hotel is well situated - in a nice quiet area, but only a few minutes walk from the shops and restaurants in the bay. The concierge booked us a 'bus top tour' and even arranged for our collection from the hotel. The indoor pool was lovely, and the outdoor areas looked great - though it wasn't warm enough for us to use them. We would like to return here in the summer with our family and try them out then! We had a lovely break in Malta, and this fantastci hotel and it's staff was a large contributor to our very memorable holiday.

Room Tip: Go for an executive room if you can - it includes breakfast and drinks and snacks, so pays for itsel...

Bedroom lovely, garden view? More of a raised bed. Although it is winter.
Upgraded to executive room. This is the only thing that they failed on. We couldn't find it. Yes on the 9th floor. Business executive rooms X2. Couldn't find the executive suite until the next day. It would help if when booking it this was pointed out. It's opened all day, morning coffee. afternoon tea 3/5pm. drinks 6/8pm. Internet for 30 mins. The staff are wonderful. Great to have an indoor pool as the weather wasn't great.

We liked everything, but especially, in no particular order;
Breakfast, the omelette gentleman, lots of food!
The pools, we managed a paddle in the outdoor pools despite it being February! Some pretty warm days as well.
Chocolate afternoon tea was huge and great fun...
Everyone was friendly to us, and very helpful, I left my top in the hire car and it magically appeared in our room with help from the reception. Thanks!
Rooms were great, we had 829, 828 and 826 so we were all close together for the week and had nice balconies and great views.
Parking was free and easy in the multi story underground next to the hotel.
You can walk into town from the hotel and there's a great cafe immediately outside for less formal eating.
Quarterdeck Bar platters on the first night informal and relaxing on arrival...
Comfy beds, great housekeeping.
We really liked being back in Malta again, went to Gozo, Medina, Mosta, carnival Valetta etc....
Thanks for everything!

Room Tip: Sea views face East, afternoon sun may be Marina facing generally, so if you want sunny balcony chec...
