We visited the Hilton, Malta for a well earned break the week before Christmas hoping to escape the hectic life and relax on a Thompson package. Well it was certainly restful. The hotel is very nice to the standard expected of the Hilton Chain. The staff friendly, if some over friendly, the rooms clean and well thought out and the spectualar ocean view never tiresome. The breakfast buffet very well stocked and the Scotish 'egg' chef very keen to share his passion for his adopted island.
Now for the negative, I will try my best not to put you off but the Hilton, Malta is best suited to high season. The Hotel's amenities were off limits most of the time to guests due to the amount of staff christmas dinners and corporate cocktail parties. The only place to relax other than your room was the hotel lobby cafe bar, which whilst nice for cream teas is too bright open and formal for a cocktail. The hotel boasts 6 outside pools which are beautiful but too cold to use or even to sit around. The indoor pool is nice with the steam rooms and sauna but not very holiday friendly or somewhere you can really relax. The tv is dismal, the bbc entertainment channel is on a loop and the same episode of casualty was shown five times during our stay, and they still died, other than that you have a diluted version of the living channel or the discovery channel. Airport investigations became our best channel. You do need money to use the facilities in the hotel as they are not purse friendly. It will cost you £15 to watch a move, and £3.50 for a sprite from the mini bar.
We were also very disappointed because we didn't get an upgrade - although our room was very spacious and had a lovely sun terrace too - mainly because the hotel doesn't offer any internet facilities, not even in their lobby, unless you get upgrade to the business suite where it is free. Us mere peasants had to do without, which we would have been glad off just to kill off a dull hour here and there.
