The hotel in nice.
Great bar and service at reception and lobby area.
Room fantastic, two king size beds!
Only thing a bit disappointing has been the old bathroom, Starwood should renew all bathrooms and put both, shower and tube, I really missed a good independent shower and stronger light.
Service excellent: problem with air condition resolved quickly and satisfactory.

The Westin is a true 5 star hotel similar to UK standard. We stayed there the middle two weeks of May. The weather was comfortable around low twenties with a couple of days of cloud. The wind can be strong but agreeable when the sun is shining making it good for sunbathing. The hotel has access to the sea from a lido area although the sea was quite unsettled when we were there. The pool area is good with a bar and refreshment facilities on hand. There is no problem with getting a lounger spot any time of day and fresh towels are always available foc. The hotel location is ideal for evening strolls and there is a prethora of cafes and restaurants in Paceville to suit all budgets. We liked two in particular having tried a few. Lulus has a good ambience and great staff and excellent, good value cuisine. I Monellis, a small Sicillian restaurant which had good quality, modern service and fresh well presented food with very friendly staff. The staff at the Westin were attentive, friendly and disciplined. The room we had was a deluxe suite which was large with massive bed, a comfortable mattress with quilt and sheet. All rooms seemed to have sea views. The main bar in the hotel was quite opulent but unfortuately lacked any holiday atmosphere so we didn't use it that frequently, although Ramon and John were good company. The bar area served meals and snacks which were of high quality. The big drawback for us as holidaymakers was that during our stay there were several conferences for groups of 200 or more people. This somewhat dampened any holiday mood as these people were here for work. The bar and restaurant at night gave the feeling of being in any British city hotel and not that of a holiday hotel but that said the hotel and its facilities are excellent. Would be good if some bar atmosphere could be created with contemporary music to get more people to use it. Malta has a lot to offer for a one week or two week stay if you want more than the sunbathing. The island is small enough to get to see all the cultural attractions, shopping and nightlife. The transport around is cheap and well organised and simple to follow. Valletta is the jewel in the crown. What an historical heritage. Do the harbour cruise if you get the chance.

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms are of good size with good views but all rooms appeared to have reasonable views.

We stayed at the Westin Dragonara in July 2012, and it was just what we were looking for. Staff were extremely friendly and welcoming on arrival and we were impressed with the grandeur of the hotel on first impressions inside. Our room was big, clean and had everything we needed. We booked late through Expedia and as is often the case, the sea view was only captured when looking far to the right - straight infront were rooftops and even the odd air conditioning unit. But it wasn't so bad to make us want to change rooms.

The hotel has two good sized swimming pools which are very different in nature. One is in the middle of the hotel complex, overlooked by the hotel, and the other is away to the right, out of sight of the main hotel. Both are nice, but we prefered the hotel further away as it was right next to the sea. A pet hate is a hotel with great pools but not enough loungers - not a problem here, plenty of loungers around the pool and dotted all over the rock faces next to the sea, many of them in small clusters, making it more private. You can easily enter the sea from the rock edges of the hotel and many of the loungers were close enough to feel the spray of the waves.

Being July, there were lots of families, and our favourite pool had a kids club every morning, but the hotel is so vast with so many different areas that it didn't bother us (a couple in our early 30s).

The hotel has poolside bars offering very attentive waiter service and poolside restaurant / cafe with a basic menu. A few different restaurants within the hotel in the evenings, we tried a couple and the food was good, if a little expensive. Great views over the sea.

The hotel is located in st Julian's, which is ok. Just a few streets away, the nightlife scene is a bit tacky, cheap and nasty, but you can avoid it easily enough. Just past the hotel is a small bay called st. george's with a few bars and restaurants and to the other side are some bigger, nicer bays (Spinola and St. Julian's) which have lots of buzzing restaurants on the waterfront. These bays are about a 10 minute walk from the hotel.

In July, Malta is a bit festival mad - each night there were some amazing firework displays that you could see from just about anywhere in the area, and which went on for about 30 minutes.

The hotel has a good selection of trips on offer - we Took the captain Morgan boat tour to the blue lagoon, which is a must in Malta. It's quite busy, and hot, but the 'captain' was great and it's a good way to see Valetta from the water and all of the battle stations / waterfront defences from it's varied maritime history. The blue lagoon was packed full of tour boats, but still beautiful. The water is crystal clear and aqua. Whist moored for a couple of hours, you have lunch on the boat and can dive, swim in the sea with the fish. We took a speed boat trip out to sea with a speed hungry driver, and went into all the small coves and inlets for some great photos.

We also took a hop on hop off bus tour for the whole day, exploring the island. It isn't a big island, but quite a lot to see, so we really took our time exploring.

Overall, we won't go back because we've seen much of what there is to see in Malta, but if we did, we would definitely stay at the Westin Dragonara.

Room Tip: Ask for a front facing sea view

Dear Emma S,

Thank you for your comments following your stay at the Westin Dragonara Resort in July 2012.

We are happy to read that you have found the resort to be a great place for relaxing and enjoyed the spacious rooms.

The Westin Dragonara Resort indeed enjoys a great location. The resort is set on a peninsula and enjoys direct access to the sea. As you have rightly mentioned, during the summer months the resort has two pool areas and the Reef Club area where one can relax by the sea side.

We thank you for your time to share this experience with fellow travellers and look forward to welcome you back to the resort in the future

I stayed here with my family 12 years ago and always said we would return. I am so glad that we did. Just back from a week with my wife at the Westin Dragonara, and can say without doubt that it is one of the best hotels I have ever visited. A real pleasure. Check in was smooth and to our great delight we found we had been upgraded (free) to a 6th floor Junior Suite. This was brilliantly clean, very spacious and everything worked as it should. I did not use the wifi or any other business facilities so cannot comment on them. Breakfast was excellent, with a very wide ranging buffet served with a smile either indoors or on the terrace. We experienced no noise or any other problem during our stay and would certainly recommend the hotel for anyone thinking of a holiday in Malta. The hotel is easy to reach (a bit tricky first time if you are driving there), within five minutes walk of a wide range of restaurants, bars and shops and very close to the number 12-13-15 bus routes for Valetta and elsewhere.

This resort really is one of the best places to enjoy Malta. It is very spacious and beautifully arranged. The lobby is impressive, and has a very pleasant atmosphere.

The pool area is very nice, and you can easily spend a day there. There is also a very nice private “beach”. It needs to be mentioned that Malta hardly has any sand beaches except for the north. Otherwise, you find cliffs. This “beach” is like a large patio, and there are 2 steps to get inside the crystal clear water. The patio is arranged like a real beach with bamboo umbrellas and huts with matrasses and cushions to relax and look on sea.

The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful in all areas whether it is at the reception or in the restaurant or the gym/spa. You get the impression that everybody really likes to work here.

The rooms are very big and nice, and all of them seem to have sea view and a large balcony. The furniture is very nice. It is also very quiet in the rooms. All you hear is the comfortable “noise” of the sea in case you like to sleep with open balcony door like we did.

Breakfast really is a treat. The variety and quality of food definitely leaves no open wishes. There is even a cooler with sparkling wine / prosecco. Breakfast is served both inside and outside when the weather allows. For me, it was a perfect start of the day to have breakfast on the nice patio under sun-umbrellas.

The location is also very good. You can easily walk to many restaurants, for example around Saint Julien’s Bay. Good nightlife is also close by. If you have a car, it takes only 15 minutes to drive to Valetta. Parking in the hotel garage is free for hotel guests. Internet is free in the lobby.

The gym made a good impression, even though we did not use it. The spa might be the only area where I would not give full score. There is a dry sauna, steam room, pool, and jacuzzi. I think, the sauna and Jacuzzi could use some renovation. The sauna was not as hot as it should be. Also the outdoor jacuzzis did not have warm water. It was the same temperature as the swimming pool.

All in all the few flaws in the spa did not trouble at all the overall very enjoyable stay in the Westin Dragonara Resort. By the way, it also seems to be quite popular for business travelers as they have facilities for business people, too.

As my usual Hotels in Malta were booked out, my local colleague advised me to stay in the Westin. Saying it was a beautiful Hotel. I have to agree with him that the Hotel looks beautiful and is in a marvelous location. Lovely swimming pool, a beach etc.
For a family holiday it would probably be wonderful (if you can afford it). However for business travelers this Hotel may once have been suitable, but today it is not anymore.
My biggest complaint is the fact that there is no free internet in the rooms. So what business person nowadays does not want internet in his room. The cost is 7 Euro for 1 hr or 15 Euro per day. However due to t he fact that the internet is not open connecting to it from anything other than a laptop is not easy. There is in fact an 8 page booklet in the room explaining how to connect an iPhone to the internet. Also if your phone wants to connect to the internet, you must first disconnect your laptop.
The Hotel is already quite old , which makes it noisy. You can hear what goes on in the room next door.
Security is a laugh as the old (single pane glass) balcony doors did not properly latch. When you are on the 4th floor (really the 1th floor) people can jump upon your balcony and simply slide the doors open. Also the air conditioning is disabled when this door is not properly closed. That means having to slam (and I mean slam with all your strength) the sliding door shut half a dozen times before the air conditioning finally starts.
The sea views from the room are beautiful, but most only have the view when you are on the balcony and not from the room itself.
To be honest one very positive about this Hotel is the helpfulness of the staff. The concierge, waiters and reception staff went out of their way to help.
Honestly I was not impressed.

Room Tip: Most floors with standard rooms are numbered from 1 to 27. 1 and 27 are closed to the elevator and f...

Dear travellerfs,

Thank you for your feedback following your stay at the Westin Dragonara Resort and for mentioning that you have found our associates to be very helpful

The resort indeed enjoys a wonderful location, with direct access to the sea and wonderful views.

Please accept our apologies for not meeting your expectations during your stay with us and we have taken note of the comments which you have highlighted.

Your comment regarding the balcony doors has been read with concern, we invite you to contact us directly on jonathan.borg@westin.com with further details on the matter. Security at the resort is one of our top priorities and the balcony doors are thus designed not to be opened from the outside. Balcony doors are also connected to an energy saving mechanism that when opened, the air conditioning is automatically disengaged.

We would like to take this opportunity to mention that the resort offers free internet connection at the lobby area and also in specific room types and packages where internet is included. In the deluxe sea view rooms the internet is at a charge depending on the internet package chosen, where we have both economy and premium packages.

We thank you once again for your comments and look very forward to another opportunity to welcome you back to the resort in the near future

Kind regards
Jonathan
