Bernard Hotel
Ranked #29 of 33 Hotels in Saint Julian's
Reviewed 22 July 2008

My partner and I are both in our early twenties, so we thought The Bernard would be ideal for us as we enjoy our nightlife and thought the hotel would be perfect due to it's close location to all the clubs and bars. Little did we know the hotel is situated literally on the door step of all the major clubs. Even for us we found it too noisy with the music going on til 4/5 in the morning, then building work - both outside our door in the hotel, and ourside our "balcony" (which faced a brick wall) - starting at 7am.
The room itself was thankfully clean and tidy and the housekeepers did do a good job. I didn't really appreciate the manners of some of the reception staff however.
The breakfast food was definately something not to shout about and would have rathered a slice of pizza from the kebab shop next to the hotel every morning instead.
The first time I set foot in the pool I was left choking for the next half an hour due to the amount of chlorine in it.
All in all, an ok stay....although, i would never stay at this hotel again, and definatley would not recommend it.

The hotel itself was reasonable. The room we were given initially had no proper window and was on the coridoor leading to the breakfast room. This meant that the noise from the clubs kept you awake until about four/five and then breakfast noises started about seven! We were moved to a slightly better room, with a window that was a bit better than the first one. But it was right by the lift so people coming in at five o'clock still in party mode woke me up. Even as a mature couple we enjoy a bit of life, but this was way over the top. I have never seen so many young people out partying at once before. It was very noisy.
We didn't have a problem with the cleanliness, our room was cleaned daily and the linens changed.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone over the age of 19.

Under no circumstances stay here. This is not a 4 star hotel. We were shown 4 tatty old rooms very small and decided we wanted our money back when we found the dead cockroach. The location is not relevent. You can walk from one end of St Julians to the other in about 10 mins. And taxi's are cheap and plentiful!!

I would like to comment on the below mentioned review.

First of all it is clearly outlined in all brochures, websites etc that the Bernard is located in the heart of the night life thus one may expect some noise form the bars surrounding the Hotel.

Our rooms are certified by the Malta Tourism Authority and inspected regularly. Furthermore we have painted all rooms and installed new bathrooms.

We have replaced all mattresses with new ones and changed curtains and bedspreads.

Last but not least we treat all our rooms and public areas. We are contracted by Comtec Pest Control Ltd who treat all areas and rooms every fortnight. The fact that the cockroach was found dead means that they they do their job well and that the treatment is effective.

Should anyone have any further questions or require any sort of information please feel free to contact me on sebastiaan@hotelbernard.com.mt

Kind Regards,

Sebastiaan van den Berg

Not really clean, not really dirty. Furniture needs renovation. Cleaning people wake you up at 8.30 shouting "Hellohellohello" and knocking loudly at the door even if they know the discos downstreet played music until 4 AM.
Breakfast is poor, beverages are definitely not to try.
The position is nonetheless excellent, just in the very heart of St. Julians nightlife, 5 min walk from the beach and the shops, 10 min walk from the bus stop.
Don't choose it if you enjoy to sleep at night!

This hotel is about 15 feet away from several very loud nightclubs and bars which stay open till 4am. Then the noise of clubbers leaving and having fun.. The major building work in the Bernard hotel starts about 7 am and continues thoughout the day, drilling, hammering and the ever popular angle grinder. ! Dont hope to get any sleep till you leave and head home. The hotel itself is over the top of a kebab bar, where breakfast is served. The hotel is currently having a new bar built beside the kebab shop (where you have breakfast) its on the ground floor dirrectly under the accomodation. it is also having a major extention built 6 floors high and will probabally double the hotel size, painters are painting inside during the day, and everywhere is covered in dust.. !
i am guessing but i dont think this extensive work will be finished in 2008.. i have numerous pictures of the extention and the views of breezblock from the rooms, (we moved once) and our friends moved 2 times. before we where far enough away from the noise to sleep with the help of ear defenders.. Go to St Julians, but dont stay here !

If you like spending the night in a disco, welcome to Bernard Hotel where you can remain in bed listening to the latest disco beats until 4:00 in the morning...

Anyway, you can read this in most posts here and the hotel calls itself "vibrant" - nice euphemism ;-) As I knew it before, I wasn't surprised at all and since I stayed there for a party weekend, it didn't matter to me. But what mattered was the fact, that they started construction work inside the hotel at around 8:00 in the morning. How can you go clubbing and be woken up after only 3 hours of sleep?

But there were other things: The day I arrived, I had three choices of water temperature for the shower: "too hot", "boiling hot" and "extremely hot". At least staff was friendly and they fixed it during the day. The aisles look shabby, but the room was OK. Clean and rather roomy.

For 30 Euro it was a good deal, they gave me a double room for a single price - a shame that I didn't bring a girl in ;-)

I can recommend this hotel only for youths in their early 20s, who want to spend each night at the discos around the corner. And you should not pay more than some 30 Euros for a single or 40 for a double - It's definitively not worth more. Four stars is exagerated by far, three would be more adequate.

And one final word about the nearby discos: Even if you are only a little bit over thirty, you'll feel like a zombi. The crowd is extremely young. They check IDs rather strictly at the entrance, but it seems that the youths coming in, have had their 18th birthday only a couple of days ago. Maltas best nightlive spot in St. Julians is rather Kindergarten-Disco - lightyears away from real party sports like Ibiza, Barcelona or Berlin.

MOST IMPORTANT - If you do not like being in the midst of Party Central don't book this hotel . If your young or into clubs and bars then this is the hotel for you ....
We paid 22 pounds a night per room for 2 people .
11 quid each for bed and breakfast is excellent value .
I just wanted a hotel that was cheap and cheerfull - i wanted to show my partner the lively side of Malta - even off season the pub n club scene is very busy in Pacewville , st Julians , georges bay and i wanted a good base for visiting Valetta etc
so i was very suprised at the quality i got - especially considering previous reviews .
just see the picture of our room ...pretty impressive for 22 pound a night - it was huge - very light and airy - decent bathroom - plenty of hot water - good balcony with a sea view .
this hotel needs a little sprucing up in the public areas - carpets a bit worn etc but our room was spotless , the maid service a little too enthusiastic - ie still wantin to come and clean even with a do notdisturb sign on the door ...beds were clean and comfortable . Maybe we got a good room as the hotel was reasonably quiet but there was a lot of work being done internally - ie extending roof terrace , improvement of toilets etyc .
Breakfast was in a gorgeus, trendy dining room that actually doubles up as a night club in the evening- so that should indicate the usual clientel of the hotel . young and clubbing !!
the breakfast was god value for the money - not just continental tho sausages etc . didnt like the tea n coffee tho machine made ...yuck .....

Iam a young 43and my partner 36 and the thursday night was reasonably quiet but you could still hear the music at 3am ...even with the double , double glazing ...i still managed a good sleep but the friday was chocker block with very young clubbers and practically every pub and club was open - the Bernard is right in the heart of it all . the music was quite loud but again we expected it so it didnt really bother us as we were well for warned .
midweek off season in this hotel is reasonably quiet but weekends the place is buzzing . in the summer i was told it is bedlam in the area .....busy , busy ...busy

So would i stay there again - yes i would if it were the same price and value and it was midweek - would i take a family of young kids to the hotel - i doubt it - would i advise pensioners to stay here ...definatly not - if its a quiet winter break you want ---this is a big NO - NO .

I can understanfd if you had paid Travel agent prices and thought you were going somewhere quiet and 4 star etc that you would get pretty peed off ...

(Maltas star system is badly flawed anyway and is being re-thoughht by the ,Maltese govnt)

but if its a clean comfortable room you want in a reasonably well run hotel and your into clubbing and nightlife then this is a great hotel for you ....

its 100 meters from a gorgeus beach , surrounded by pubs clubs and fast food , across from a multiplex cinema and bowling alley and 24 hour cafes in the bay shopping centre right oposite - its a young persons dream ......
i already knew about the noise etc before i booked and having read other reviews was fully briefed on what to expect so all was ok for me at The Bernard .....not a bad 2 night stay at all .
