“Were we lucky?”
Reviewed 30 June 2013

I didn't read any reviews until I had booked so was really worried once I'd looked on Trip Advisor. First impressions were not good with the transfer driver giving vague directions to the hotel complex and no clear signs. Big queues on arrival but it is a large complex and we arrived around 1pm so our room wasn't ready. Front of house staff are a bit ignorant/rude, some of that I put down to them just being overwhelmed by the mass of people booking in. There was a woman complaining that she had been moved twice in two days as rooms had not been suitable. None of the lifts were working on the first day. Our safe was broken but was quickly repaired by the friendly handy man. After that everything was fine but I think it's because we only look for a basic room to sleep in and keep our stuff safe! The towels and sheets were changed alternate days. We were also lucky that we were on the fourth floor behind an office building which protected us from the noise at night as Paceville is the entertainment centre for Malta. The complex has recently been taken over so not sure if previous bad comments are from the previous owners not caring or just teething trouble for the new owners. We did get a welcome letter from the new owners asking for patience during the transfer!

As I was travelling alone as I am widowed. I certainly picked the wrong hotel. it was large full of very young , and very noisy people in the pool between 3.00 and 5.30 am . drinking and making lots of noise the security guard also allowed this to carry on I recored it . Also you had to pay extra for air-con , Wifi , hair dryer, gym, Fridge I would paid for but did not no about this till near end of my holiday .I great for the young people who wont a lively noisy holiday . Not for solo travellers , or couples . poor room conditions . The pools where amazing loved them and bar prices good . sorry I did not like it I asked to be moved to another hotel and would pay extra but this was not available for me.

Me, my partner and 3 year old son arrived on the 17th June and stayed for a week. Big queue at reception, very poor English, 2 out of 4 lifts worked, got trapped in 1. After booking we became aware that it was possible we may be on the noisy club side of the hotel but read reviews of past guests easily changing rooms. Not for us! Went down straight away to ask for another room and they told us not to unpack much as we could change rooms around 3-4pm. Came back and we got told we'd have to come back in the morning to ask again. The next day we were told the exact same thing! Basically they couldn't be bothered! Not ideal for a toddler. We didn't have a fridge, bath had rust stains amd balcony door didn't shut properly. Pool was very crowded and a couple of mornings we went down at 9am and sunbeds were all taken up :S pathetic really as alot of people had put towels down and gone out for the day, so people like us wanting to relax while keeping an eye on our son by the baby pool had to lie on the floor! went to the pool bar one day and while I was being served, a lady interupted and informed the barman that someone had thrown up by the pool, his response was a shrug and when I mentioned it to another guest she said it had been there all morning! This was our first holiday abroad as a family and I can safely say our future holidays can only get better!

La Vallette is a potentially attractive resort suffering from incompetent management. We had booked a 2 bedroom apartment and were allocated one on the fifth floor. We found that the lift was out of action so the only access was by climbing 5 flights of stairs. The lift had obviously been in this state for some time so the receptionist must have known but did not tell us and offered no help with our luggage. We asked for another room with easier access but were offered one that was much inferior so we stayed put. The apartment was clean but was poorly maintained and had no aircon. I pity the cleaners who have to carry all their materials up 5 flights of stairs! The pool area is attractive, but crowded. Our booking did not include meals so I cannot comment on the food. There are lots of reasonable restaurants close by. The best feature was the wonderful view across the sea from the apartment.

Room Tip: Do not take a room in the La Vallette apartment block.

My partner and I stayed here for 10 days. It was fairly basic - but we expected that, because (a) we didn't pay that much, and (b) we had read the reviews here.

The positives:
1. Reasonable value - we paid about £570 for 10 days all-inclusive for the 2 of us at the beginning of May 2013.

2. Good room. We asked for a room on a high floor, with a sunny balcony, and this was exactly what we got. It was a good size. We were on the top (9th) floor of La Vallette. Also, we were all-inclusive, so didn't expect a room with a kitchenette, but we got one. Didn't use it much, but it was nice to have a fridge!

3. The maids came every other day. Each time they gave us fresh towels and a new toilet roll. They also made the beds and cleaned the bathroom. They did not change the sheets or sweep/dust the bedroom or balcony while we were there - I think they only did this at room change-over time. This isn't surprising: I think there were just 2 maids for the 70 rooms on our floor, so obviously they didn't have much time to spend on each one, especially if they were doing a complete clean of rooms when it was change-over time.

4. La Vallette pool bar. We spent quite a bit of time here. It was not too crowded, and Marcel the barman was very pleasant. On all-inclusive, you could get ham/cheese rolls, apples, oranges and biscuits here - easier than queuing for breakfast or lunch in the dining room. The coffee was very good too. However, this bar closed at 5pm, which was a shame. The pool bar at St George's was open till 8pm - it was not as nice (we thought) as the one at La Vallette, but even so it was much better than the main hotel bar, which in our opinion was a nightmare.

5. Location. Being near to late-night bars, etc. isn't everyone's cup of tea. But we were told about this when we booked (although there was a building site opposite, which we weren't told about!). Because our room was in La Vallette, and high up, we avoided most of the nightclub noise. The main thing is that the hotel is in the thick of it: surrounded by bars and shops, and a very short stroll to bus stops, sea-front, etc. We particularly liked the Band Club on the bay, just a couple of minutes walk away.

The negatives:
1. Booking in was awful. I think it took about an hour. And this was in the evening, not in high season. As others have said, there was just one queue at reception - so everyone booking in/reporting problems with their room was all in the same queue, with many people just pushing in to the queue when they'd had enough of waiting.

2. The main hotel bar was really, really horrible. Apart from the daytime pool bar, there was no other bar open in La Vallette in early May. So we were told to use the bar in the main hotel, St George's Park. However, this was so awful - hot, crowded, with very offhand staff, long queues at the bar, no outside space, etc. - that, even though we were on all-inclusive, we used it just one night (the night we arrived) and then never again.

3. Lack of information. When we arrived, we were told we'd be eating at the main hotel, St George's Park, except for breakfast. But on the evening of Day 3 (Saturday) we went to St George's and were told that now the season proper had started, we'd be having evening meals in La Vallette. Why didn't they tell us this when we checked in? Or via a note to the room afterwards? In fact, why didn't the hotel provide any information at all in the rooms (regarding opening hours of restaurants, bars, etc,) or even put notices up in the lifts?

4. The food was absolutely dreadful. Honestly, my partner and I are not fussy eaters. We paid for all-inclusive, so we didn't want to pay extra for meals outside the hotel too (though we did in the end). But I've never stayed anywhere where the food was so awful. E.g. white fish that didn't taste of anything; chicken that was so dried out you couldn't even cut it; pork that was sponge-like in texture; overcooked vegetables where the water just ran out from them; mashed potato that was obviously made from powder. Also, a bizarre lack of salt and pepper sets on the tables. Why was that?

5. The lifts broke down a few times. As we were on the 9th floor, that was a horror.

6. No balcony furniture. We asked 3 times for chairs for the balcony. Each time the receptionist (a different receptionist on each occasion) wrote down our request. Twice this was written in a book that looked like a proper complaints book; once it was just written on an odd scrap of paper. It didn't matter - we never received chairs for the balcony.

7. Television in room. We don't go on holiday to watch TV, but we do like to keep up with the news from time to time. We arrived on a Thursday evening, and reported the next morning that the TV wasn't working properly (the sound was either a million decibels or non-existent). A maintenance person came that evening, fiddled with the TV for half an hour and said he'd be back. We never saw him again. After we mentioned this to reception a few times, 3 days later a different person showed up and finally fixed the TV.

Overall
We have been to Malta many times before, but hadn't stayed in St Julian's since 2002. We knew the area was probably not ideal for us, but we thought we'd try it for a change, and indeed it was ok. Certainly the hotel was just steps away from shops/bars/bus stops/ the seafront. The room was fine.

I guess the holiday was reasonable value, but it would have been better if we had been on a room-only basis. I cannot say often enough how dreadful the food and the main evening bar were. Because of that, we would never in a million years go back here.

Visited June 2013 just got back ..what a relief !
No aircon in our room just a ceiling fan! When we booked the room the website site said aircon was available at an extra local cost we asked at the desk and were informed that there was no aircon at all in the hotel. We had a self catering room on the eighth floor very basic and not very clean the bathroom was very grubby. Only one lift in 4 worked and its quite a slog up the stairs to the eighth floor. Whilst some comments about this hotel complained of noise outside we only heard minimal noise. The main noise came from within the hotel. Good luck if you can catch more than a few hours sleep as the place is full of noisy Italian and French teenagers who have no concept of other guests whatsoever. Pig ignorant. Dining room very hot and served same dishes every day apparently according to 2 other guests we spoke too.. The safe in our room did not work and we gave up after 2 days of promises that someone would come to our room and fix it (we did however get our deposit back). The fridge had to be replaced after 3 days it was broken. We never got chance to sit by the pool as there were only about 50 sunbeds and these were taken before first light. We booked for 7 nights but left after 6 as thankfully we stayed with a relative the last night as we really needed to sleep before we came home.
In summary a complete waste of money. If you don't need sleep and enjoy the company of noisy rude teenagers then please book asap you wont be disappointed :)

Room Tip: Possibly rooms overlooking the pool may be cooler as looking out to sea.
