“Enjoyed our stay by the sea”
Reviewed 6 January 2010

The hotel was in a great location away from busy roads but within a few minutes walk of shops and restaurants. Our balcony had beautiful views of the sea and the only sounds were waves lapping. The room was clean the the bed comfortable. Only irritations were the temperature in the shower varied slightly while using it and we had to pay 12€ to use the room safe and €5 per hour for wifi.

The hotel was very close to Paceville which is full of bars with loud music. It took us a little while to find where the restaurants were but once we did there were plenty.

The Marina is part of the Corinthia group of hotels, there are three on the Island, the Corinthia San Gorg is adjacent to the Marina and forms part of the resort.
I must declare this is the fourth time we have stayed here, but there have been some improvements in the hotel and it is worth noting.
We stayed with an inland view, we could see the sea, but having had several sea views in the past and water is, well, just water, we decide to go for the economy of an inland view over the catering college at the rear of the hotel.
Having read previous reviews I must admit there was a little noise from the underground nightclub, but only as revellers departed early morning, and this was only on the Friday and Saturday nights, which to be honest didn't disturb us at all.
The room we stayed in had recently been refurbished with good quality linen and was well decorated and very clean, this is one area the hotel has improved.
The breakfast had a massive choice of food full English, continental, meats fruits, croissants, I counted seven different types of bread and if you wanted something special the chef would cook it there and then for you. You cant beat that.
We didn't sample the evening meal in the hotel as we were on B+B.
The Vinotheque wine bar was quite busy the food looked appetizing but the price of the wine was astronomic 27 euros for a 6 euro bottle of wine is taking the mickey.
Cafe 24 was as ususal good service, good food, excellent pasties and baguettes, especially the ftira's.
There is a pain in using the indoor pool, yes you have to walk across around 100 yards to the San Gorg.
Food wise we use the Bistro at the Radisson, next door, a five minute walk up the hill, excelllent food reasonably priced 24/7 with a reduced menu after 23:00.
Beware if you wish to dine in the evening at peak times BOOK A TABLE it is very popular withe the locals.
I thoroughly recommend the hotel, if you are a clubber, its a five minute walk to Paceville and all the vodka and noise you require.
If you want peace there's the peace of the beach a five minute walk downhill.
If you want culture the sightseeing buses pass the door, theres a free shuttle from the hotel to Sliema also.
You will not be disappointed here.
IF YOU ACCEPT MALTA FOR WHAT IT IS THIS HOTEL IS WELL PRICED FOR THE STANDARD IT OFFERS.
We have also stayed at the San Gorg, Le Meridian (in a suite) Radisson Bay point, the Waterfront in Sliema, the Santana Qwara Palace, Suncrest in Qwara, and when the Jerma Palace was operating we stayed there.
We know Malta and what we are talking about regarding hotels.
One last comment, parking a car can be difficult on Fridays and Saturdays for free, use the San Gorg hotel's car park its free and only a five minute walk, we have used it for years.

Our side of the hotel was facing St. George's Bay, which was beautiful. The beds are great and you get lots of pillows. Our breakfast was included and is wonderful. We didn't pay for the hotel so we don't know the price of it. The hotel is walking distance from Paceville, where the party lasts all night but we can't hear a peep from our room.

Perhaps the only downside is that the water in the showers fluctuate temperatures like someone is consistently flushing the toilette. Not intolerable though.

We had a great holiday in Malta. The hotel was perfect for us, location was excellent and the views into the bay were stunning. It was only a 5 mins walk into the Paceville to the restaurants and bars. Did not think the hotel was noisy from Paceville and could not hear a thing. There are more than enough places to choose from sunbathing, sitting around the pool's (4 in total) or down by the sea. The great thing about this hotel was there were no English people or Germans putting towels on the beds, clearly as there are so many of them you don't have to do it. Lots of Spanish and Italians guests. Buffet breakfast was excellent. The evening dinner buffet was soso but the view was stunning. Luckily we were able to swap our evening voucher for a meal at the local Italian restaurant next door. The reception was really helpful for guidance on local visits. All in all our holiday was excellent and the hotel stay certainly helped it to be so good. There is a star fish dive centre attached to the hotel, which is great. Their service was excellent, so helpful and friendly. It was the lady at the dive centre reception that told us about the area and the buses. Great perfect holiday!

This is a lovely hotel in a beautiful position. It is away from the noise of the night life but in easy walking distance. There were loads of sunbeds on different levels so you could lay beside one of the pools or by the sea. I should imagine it would not be very relaxing if you have a young family as the terrace has lot's of steps/slopes which were very slippy when wet and it is a little like a maze! there were a lot of small children while we were there and it could get pretty noisy around the pools but it was very easy to find a quite spot. The rooms were very nice, good balcony - we had a lovely view of the bay, the rooms were very clean and the beds were very very comfortable. We asked for tea and coffee making facilities in our room which they provided but the tea and coffee was not re-stocked after the first use until my husband asked for it! We stayed bed and breakfast and the breakfast was nice. We didn't use the bar or stop around for the hotel entertainment as we had a busy itinerary, we went to the MTV Isle Concert which was excellent (and free!!) we saw Lady GaGa and the Black Eyed Peas it was a great experience. We both said that we would come back to this hotel as we found it very relaxing and the staff friendly. There is a small beach on the bay it was very crowded but free.

We got a great deal through Travel Zoo for a 5 night break for me & my husband - our first child-free break together for 5 years!

We arrived at the hotel around 5pm on Sunday 7th June and our first impressions were very good. Our room was on the 2nd floor - room 7227 - a large, bright and airy room with a huge and comfortable bed, table & chairs, ample wardrobe space, a dressing table, desk and a small balcony overlooking the bay. The bathroom was very large with big bath towels and toiletries, the only thing missing was a shower curtain so we found we had to turn the shower head towards the wall to avoid getting too much water on the floor. Also, a bath mat wasn't provided every day.

We had tea & coffee making facilities, but only enough milk for one drink each, without having to request more. The air conditioning was effective, if a little noisy.

The staff around the resort were friendly and helpful. There was a power cut in the local area on our last morning, which obviously affected almost everthing. There wasn't a lot the staff could do except advise guests that it was the area, not the hotel. The kitchen staff got breakfast out as usual and the power was restored after about 2 hours or so.

There are four pools between the two hotels and plenty of sun beds, which was great as we could have a leisurely breakfast without rushing to get a sun bed - makes such a change!! We got cold lagers from the kiosk by the largest pool but was disappointed when I asked for a sandwich and got a pre-packed one. We didn't try all the food outlets but we drank cocktails at Henry J Beans most nights, ate at East 333 - formerly El Frejgetana, which got very good reviews - that was lovely. The food was terrific, great settting overlooking the bay but not much of an atmosphere as there were only 3 other couples in there at the same time as us.

We also had lunch at Vinoteque, which we enjoyed. Breakfast was buffet style, which you could eat on the terrace or inside. Service was a little hit & miss but friendly. The food was nice, plenty of choice.

There is a spa and gym located in the San Georg next door, my husband used the gym a couple of times, he said it was ok, not huge but had enough for his requirements. I didn't use the spa or other facilities.

The location of the Marina Hotel is great. Five minutes walk to Paceville and local shops. Paceville was where we spent our evenings - try Hugos Lounge for fantastic Thai food and cocktails. We spent our lunchtimes at Andrews Bar, which just at the bottom of the road from the Marina, was a great place to people watch and their wine was the best I tried all week!! Although Paceville is a noisy area with booming music which we could hear from our balcony, it didn't bother us once we closed the patio doors. This may be more of a problem if you have a room directly facing the local 'beach' which is to the right of the entrance of the hotel.

Overall, we had a lovely time, we did very little apart from relax, sun bathe and chill out. I would say the location is a little hilly so those with mobility difficulties might find it hard to manage. We would definately recommend this hotel and plan to return another time to explore more of Malta.

Date of stay 29 May – 8 June

Girlfriend and I booked this particular hotel after trawling through reviews of what seemed like every hotel in the St Julian’s / Sliema area of Malta.

The hotel was very easy to find, though was slightly annoyed that the ‘parking’ facilities were a paid underground car park. To use it all week would have come to around 80 Euros! Fortunately there’s a fair bit of parking along the road, and further up the hill and around the corner. Having said that, I suspect that if you visit during peak season you might struggle to get parked.

Initial impressions of hotel; staff were efficient on check-in, nice décor, room clean and modern, ample wardrobe space, air-con, plus fridge at no extra charge. We even managed to get about 5 English speaking channels on the TV, though admittedly, 3 of which were news channels. I notice from one other review that someone had a problem with their room being too hot, the rooms we had were fitted with air-con which was silent on setting 1 but more than efficient enough to keep the room cool. The room opened up onto a balcony which looked over the bay. Very nice. However….

Our room (number 7428) was one floor up from the public area of reception. Although we’d asked for a quiet room, I can assure you that if you get allocated any room near that landing and you don’t sleep well, you most likely WILL get disturbed. The worst seemed to be early in the morning for some reason – I ended up requesting a room change, which moved us 10 rooms down the corridor and was MUCH better. The rooms themselves (like most hotels, it seems) are not carpeted, so anyone moving furniture either above or to your side will be heard.

There were lots of sun loungers available on the hotel terrace which looked over the bay, and while we were there we had no problems at all getting one whenever we wanted. Again, this would probably change during peak season. There is a small un-heated pool and also a bar/kiosk type place which serves drinks/ice creams and snacks.

We went B & B only as buffet-style food isn’t a particular favourite of mine. The breakfasts were the usual hotel buffet fare; watered down juice, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, tea/coffee, cold meats, bread and eggs/bacon etc. They even had porridge. Staff were friendly and helpful, though nearly every day the tables hadn’t been re-laid properly after previous people. It became a bit of a game to guess which items would be missing the following morning. No big deal, but an indicator of Maltese customer service in general; i.e. ‘relaxed’. It wasn’t unusual for house-keeping to forget to replace tea/coffee making facilities in the room either. There’s one computer in the lobby of the hotel with free internet access, which was very handy, though naturally you would have to sometimes wait to use it.

Speaking of customer service… on two consecutive days we went into different McDonalds (one in Valetta, the other in St Julian’s) and on both occasion walked out due to absolutely terrible staff. It seems they only employ people who can’t operate a till or take customer orders. An absolute shambles. I’d like to say these were isolated incidents but we also ate at the Hard Rock Café in Paceville and the service there was almost as bad. A group of 7 at a table near us walked because they’d been kept waiting so long for food to arrive. The problem seemed to be poor planning in the kitchen, though in fairness, the food was nice when it arrived. Best place we found for eating out; Fluid, 2nd floor of the shopping mall.

The hotel is situated within easy walking distance of the local pubs/clubs if that’s your ‘thing’, but far enough away to not suffer any disturbance. There’s a bus stop outside the hotel for those not wishing to drive and most days seemed to have a bus every 30 mins. The local ‘beach’ is only 2 mins down the road, but be warned, it’s grit, not sand. This hotel shares facilities with its sister hotel the San Gorg which is 2 mins up the road. There’s no gym or entertainment at the Marina hotel and I suspect it gets its five-star rating because of the use of facilities at the San Gorg. Personally I wouldn’t rate it as a five-star because of that.

Overall impression? A nice hotel, clean, nice staff and nice enough location but not special enough to make me want to go back. If you can get a good deal (we got a late booking at a very discounted price) I’d say give it a go, just make sure you don’t get a room near the lifts.
