“Good hotel in poor location”
Reviewed 20 May 2011

A 5 star hotel in a 1 star location. The hotel is very large with an indoor pool,a spacious outdoor rooftop pool and sundeck and a private beach (150m from the Hotel). Five restaurants(very reasonably priced for a 5 star) and a massive breakfast selection. Comfortable rooms but large soulless public areas. ( a little like staying in an airport)
The location is opposite a shopping mall, next to the major youth/nightclub area of the island.

I went there on my own for an Easter trip, when I had in mind sightseeing as much I possibly can as well as resting and relaxing in a nice hotel. The choice was perfect. The hotel is big but wisely spread around so you don't feel the big spaces or see masses of people. The swimming pool at the roof, although I have not used it, is big and offers a good view across the bay and nearby places. There is also a smaller swimming pool inside the hotel. Staff at the reception was always very helpful, even with the simplest queries or problems. The room was fantastic, big bedroom, big bathroom, really comfortable bed and a balcony with chairs and sun beds, overlooking (in my case on the 8th floor) the street opposite with shopping centre and food places. The room was quiet as the double balcony door kept the noise out really well. Except the usual tv, minibar, safe etc there also was a wireless modem you could plug into with your laptop. I had breakfast included in my stay and have to say the food was great with a variety of choice (from all kinds of baked breakfast, savouries, fruits, yoghurts and cornflackes, rolls and bread, crossaints and sweets to pancakes, waffles, and omelettes/eggs done as you like them), with cooks/waiters friendly and helpful. The hotel is located in Paceville - the place for quick food (as well as Hard Rock Cafe if you're a fan), some shops (shopping centre) and nightlife (basically located on one street perpendicular to the hotel), a short walk to St. Julian's Bay and a bus ride to Valletta (50cents). Sightseeing buses also stop nearby.

Although I was on my own, there were also couples and families with children in my group and everyone enjoyed their stay. Not sure if there is anything happening during the day or how noisy it gets, as I left early morning and came back late evening. Nevertheless, I definitely would recommend this place.

We spent a fantastic week in the Intercontinental in St Julians. 5 of us (3 children) took one of the top suites and we were very impressed with the space, the 3 (!) balconies and the attention to detail and service from all the staff. Special mention must go to Cornelia and to Joseph, both of whom couldn't do enough for us. I travel on business a ridiculous amount and I thought that another 'corporate' hotel might have been a bit of a busman's holiday but not a bit of it...all the facilities to keep intouch but totally relaxing. The recomendations of the concierge made sure that we took in some of the most interesting and least well known sites as well as the classics of Malta & Gozo. Loved the Club Lounge for convenience and the special extra touches e.g. afternoon tea.
Thank you again to Cornelia and the whole team for making our stay so relaxing

Staff was helpful and kind (reception and cleaners), we had all things a family could need (except maybe free internet), including flexibility in checking in and out at a slightly widened hours than nominal.
Rooms were quite silent, with a nice balcony to chill out.
Only one little spot on the way to constant improving: beach service starts late for families with kids.

This is really a 4* and a 5* hotel in one. The highest paying guests enjoy 5* service but those who reserved standard rooms may have been disappointed with what they got. No doubt, the service is impeccable for all, friendly and helpful in all cases. The huge breakfast room for the less paying souls looks more like a room as one finds in 3-4 star package tour hotels. The offering of the food was abundant but not consistently of the highest quality. The location wasn't 5 star either, close too rather noisy dancing halls and discos. Apart from that to far from Sliema and Valetta. A room on the street side should be avoided.

Used some free nights was traveling with wife and kids 1 5 yo and 1 1yo. The superior room was just too small since the beds are French size so we upgraded, at a cost, to the jr suite. This was a good move since the club room was included. The staff in the club room were excellent, the breakfast, evening cocktails and overall access to the club room made a big difference. The hotel is nice these are a few comments positive aspects: indoor pool, outdoor pool looked nice but too cold, front desk staff were great. The taxi service was good only one driver I did not care much for and he wasn't completely honest. The others were affordable and helpful, the hotel is clean our first room wasn't perfectly clean but the jr suite was great, the gym is nice lots of equipment with a kids area attached so grownups can workout. Downside location is not great with kids it is the nightlife area but we were in bed by 10 I think that in the summer it would not be nice and I bet very loud.

Malta is nice for a short vacation. The people are very friendly and found the food to be good. Try the restaurant next door to the hotel to the left if you face front lobby.
