InterContinental Malta
Ranked #12 of 33 Hotels in Saint Julian's
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 28 May 2013

The Intercontinental is a beautiful hotel with great service. It seems to be a bit worn around the edges and behind the scenes. It is well used, so it's understandable that it would be a bit worn.

We arrived very early and they were able to check us in and store our luggage. They gave us ideas of what we could do until our room was ready. They offered the pools or beach use. We ended up taking the hop-on, hop-off bus and the hotel called us when our room was ready.

We stayed in a family room on the 8th floor South which was more than adequate for our family of five. It was spacious and perfect. The beds were a little worn with the springs making noises when you move, but they were not terribly uncomfortable. The A/C was not cooling appropriately so I mentioned it to the front desk and they promptly fixed it. It cooled wonderfully for the remainder of our stay. There was some black mold in the shower stall in the room as well as black staining on the backside of the sink in the bathroom. I realize that mold grows easily and is difficult to contain in areas that get wet constantly.

The courtyard garden was nice to walk through, though it was being used two of the nights we were there. It was nice to have our partial balcony view of it. Since our room was on a corner it was partially blocked, but it was beautiful. There was a wedding reception and the music was nice to hear from our room and it was over before it was too late in the evening.

The outdoor pool was very nice and our children enjoyed their time there. There were many lounge chairs and umbrellas. The beach was nice as well. The indoor pool was nice, though it did seem to feel a bit dirty with tiny pieces of debris floating in it. There was also a hole in the ceiling and what looked to be water damage of some sort. It just felt dirty. The kids didn't seem to mind it too much though.

The breakfast was fantastic. The buffet was plentiful and varied enough that everyone found plenty to eat each morning. Also when we checked out of the hotel at 3:30am to catch our flight out there was coffee, juice and croissants available, which was a great touch and helped us immensely with feeding the kids a bite before we left.

Behind the scenes the hotel may be in need of repair. The emergency stairs across from our room was a concern. We of course checked it out (we like to make sure our children know the exit points incase of fire). Upon opening the door there was a pipe directly overhead with water noises gushing. The lights were flickering and it scared our children. I know this area is not usually used, but it did not feel safe.

We ordered room service and the meals were prompt and fresh. Our children enjoyed them immensely.

We wanted to have a drink one evening but the bar area was being used by a private function so that was disappointing as we had hoped to have a quiet drink together away from the hubbub of the night life outside of the hotel.

The location is perfect for getting around. There is a bowling alley, movie theater, many restaurants, shopping and bars nearby. The hop-on, hop-off bus picks up right at the end of the street and drops off at the other end.

The entrance of the hotel is a mess currently, constructions next to the hotel, you have to passed through it to the beach area and to the mall, it would be much better and it worths 5 stars.

The hotel is next to many bars, some people would dislike but it is not noisy indeed. If the hotel is located at Silema it would be excellent, it's not bad at the st. Julian's but you have to walk to the hotel's beach club and the paranga restaurant. Personally I prefer the Sciacca sicilian restaurant just next to the hotel, they have excellent seafood, brilliant & creative chef and professional wine specialist. I would write a review later on of this restaurant.

The hotel lobby is bright and spacious, staff very professional and helpful, concierge provides useful information to travel in Malta, hop on hop off, excursions...

Rooms either face shopping mall or pool, for lower floor facing pool side you would have graden view only, but it is very quiet. Every room has a large balcony and floor to ceiling window. Rooms are spacious and clean, and the bathroom as well, bath gel, shampoo and conditioner provider, good smell as L'occitane though not the same brand. No slippers and toothbrush provided, I wonder they are available upon request.

Breakfast is excellent, large variety of fresh fruits, fresh made yogurt, hot dishes, cold cuts, fried eggs and omlette at the right hand side of restaurant, very busy during 8 to 9 but they have lots of tables so it doesn't takes too long to queue up.

Spa & massage at extra cost, affordable price and some special package available as well, indoor and outdoor swimming pool though size pretty small but fair enough.

Hotel can arrange taxi pick up at airport to hotel at €21 one way, taxu driver are nice in Malta, on our wat back to airport it was peak hour witj bad traffic and the driver were much worry than us and rush on the highway at his very best to ensure us to catch the flight.

anything else? good value, not sure it's normal discount rate or because of the construction works around the hotel, I booked one month ahead at €516 for 4 nights inc. breakfast with a graden view room, pay €20 extra for a superior room to have a pool view room at higher floor. couldn't ask for more.

if you are looking to party then this is certainly where you need to be as you will get that just when you step outside the hotel......it is really chaotic and the parties in the area go on all night....We were here this past December and this guys were more concerned with putting up their Christmas lights than letting us pull in to the front of the hotel..we were in a rental car and after making rounds about 7 times checking to see if they were done....finally just pulled in and had to go in to get someone attention......so that was so stressful as we had a bit of a hard time finding the hotel to start with. once we were checked....it looks more like a conference center than an intercontinental..... then there was an issue with breakfast and room payment because they never asked as for a card at check in and just when we thought we had rectified the problem then same thing came up for the 3 days that followed.....lack of communication in their part and no one followed up... overly not impressed with the service.....the staff is not attentive and could care less to help......down street is a Westin and when I return to Malta that is where i'm going.

This area is actually the party area of Malta. We were one a couples retreat, and didn't really bother with to much partying. It didn't bother us much, and hotel is peachful enough. The pool on top floor is great, breakfast english inspired (avarage), inndoor pool and sauna was decent. Overall ok, but for our purphose I would choose something closer to St. Julians bay next time. Mdina is a great getaway.

We had a disabled room as I am in a wheelchair. Facilities in the room were very good and staff were very supportive and helpful. Access all around the hotel was excellent. We ate in at the hotel several times. For us the menus were rather limited but the Water Biscuit was excellent quality.

We stopped at the intercontinental for a week. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The journey to the airport in one of the hotel taxis however, well the driving standard of the taxi driver was nothing short of appalling. Pity the hotel does not 'vet' the drivers they employ if they do this one has slipped through the net.
