“Lovely stay”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

We stayed here recently and found the hotel to be good but not a 5* one. The staff were all very professional and very happy to help if needed. The room we stayed in was right next door to the entrance to the pool on floor 10, but it was never a problem and we were never disturbed by any noise. The rooms do look tired but was more than adequate. The room was cleaned daily and the cleaners were always nice. We had the mini bar man come in one day and he put 2 cans of soda in the fridge, although we had not had any drinks out of there. We went to reception and they confirmed that 2 drinks had been put on our room bill, but when we said we hadn't had them the girl removed them from the bill so be careful. The hotel is very close to Paceville but we never found it a problem. There are plenty of shops restaurants and bars near by. Malta is a wonderful place to relax and the Intercontinental was a great place to stay.

The hotel service was very courteous and the staff very attentive.
They helped with all room requests and even with reservations for restaurants in the area.

The hotel was clean and organized and the restaurants were good.

The facilities of the hotel were at the highest level with a very enjoyable Turkish bath.

This was my first trip to Malta, and the hotel arrangements had been made by someone else. The hotel is near the beach in St Julian's and has all the amenities one could want: private beach, swimming pool, nice gym etc. The wifi is free and works well, and the staff is very attentive and friendly. The breakfast buffet is generous, of good quality and included in the rate. HOWEVER, the neighbourhood around the hotel are like the worst parts of Benidorm or Salau in Spain, with hordes of drunk people spilling out of the bars and nightclubs, beginning around lunchtime and continuing until 6-7 a.m. The bulk of the morning is spent washing down the streets and picking up the rubbish. There are numerous "gentlemens clubs" too, but I doubt that you will actually ever see any gentlemen there. To complete the horrors there is a large shopping mall across the street from the hotel. I really like Malta and will come here for a holiday at some point, but there are definitely nicer areas in which to stay. Also, one final fly in the ointment: there was a 15-minute wait to check out, which for a hotel in this range is totally unacceptable and cost them a star (the other star they lost was due to the location).

This is a great place to enjoy some true relaxation with pools and spa treatments. Our room was clean and spacious. The location was close to a beach and sightseeing tour buses. The concierge service people were friendly and very helpful. Keep in mind that this area is very busy and has a huge nightlife with lots of clubs right next door. This means that there is lots of noise outside into the late hours of the night.

From the moment we walked through the doors, we felt that this was going to be a great place to call home for a week. All staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and all we had to do was ask if anything was needed. It was especially lovely to return each day after our sightseeing, to a clean and tidy room. We appreciated the help given by staff re: buses and travel times. For one evening meal, we went to the Carissa Restaurant where we enjoyed a fabulous dining experience, complete with piano/violin accompaniment! The hotel was centrally located for our particular needs, close to buses, as we were interested in taking in the sights and history of the island. Despite being so close to Paceville, which is a rocking place, our room faced into a courtyard so we were never bothered by exterior noise. In all, a fabulous stay, and we would definitely go to the InterContinental again!

Perhaps "average" is harsh, this is a nice hotel and the staff were all helpful and friendly. It is rather impersonal though, a bit corporate. The location is pretty noisy as it is at the edge of Paceville, which is party central with lots of noisy bars and clubs just along the road. Our room was spacious but one of the stone floor tiles was badly damaged right by the window, which gives a poor first impression. The room also felt humid, slightly damp in fact, and we put this down to the type of air conditioning. The bathroom was a bit ordinary and the shower cubicle leaked as part of the door seal was missing. I expect a bit more attention to detail in a 5 star hotel!

Breakfast was pretty good, but on our package it cost 20 euros per day and next time I would go room only instead and have breakfast at the hotel's Waterbiscuit cafe right next door. It looked better value and the food we had there one evening was very good.

Would I go back? Probably not.

This is a fine hotel, with good location and comfortable and clean rooms. However, it is the staff that stands out. We had some unusual needs, and Clarence (in the Lounge) and Francesca (front desk) were incredibly helpful, well beyond expectations. Kudos.
