“Good hotel and service, ok beach, busy area”
Reviewed 25 July 2014 via mobile

We stayed here for 5 nights in July. Hotel is modern and clean and service was good. Upon checking in we were a bit unimpressed to see they had cheekily tried to tack on to our booking breakfasts for each morning (added costs) without telling us. The private beach is ok and about 100m down the road. Although they close up the beach at 5pm and you can't take in your own food or water (so you are forced to buy from their kiosk - prices and service were ok though). Babysitting service was also good at 10 euro an hour. Just need to note the st julians area is very busy and bustling so if looking for a quiet time then maybe try a different area or bay.

This past summer I spent 4 nights at the hotel. It is the second time that I have stayed there. Although a bit expensive, the quality of the hotel is quite good.

Although some of the rooms show some sign of where and tear, the overall quality of the rooms is quite nice. I was in one of the suites that is on the upper floors.

The reception desk was very efficient and my check in went fairly quickly. I did not have the breakfast option with the room, since I've found that many hotel restaurants in Europe are quite expensive.

This wasn't to bad since the hotel's location is extremely close to a shopping mall and food court and other places to eat.

During my stay something unidentified was occurring that appeared to a potential problem for people staying at the hotel during the daylight hours for three days. To offset any problems, they offered a series of complimentary tours on each of the three days, to Mdina/Valletta; the 3 Cities, and to one of the beaches. The tours seemed to be appreciated, I was able to go on the first one.

Although the bus stop is within walking distance, however you need to walk up the hill and around a corner.

One potential problem is the number of bars in the region. Unfortunately, although on the 13th floor; I stayed during the World Cup and the crowd noise easily carried up to the 13th floor.

We stayed here for 6 days for a holiday in May and have very mixed feelings about the hotel, there are some real nice things about it, but overall it fell short of our expectations.

The check-in process was smooth and also the staff at guest relations desk has been very helpful in advising on specific stores, online check-on for return flight etc. It’s fortunate that guest relations staff is so helpful as we had to contact them on a daily basis because towels and bathing gown were missing on arrival, the room wasn’t cleaned the next day, another day there were no tea bags etc, all these issues were resolved quickly but they obviously shouldn’t happen with such frequency in any decent hotel.

The room itself was nice enough. Very clean, a decent size bathroom; the problem with the water turning hot and cold has been mentioned in quite a few reviews and also applied to our experience but mostly during the hours after breakfast and before dinner. Our room was located directly under the pool café so we would be woken each morning at 0730 when they start moving the furniture so I would recommend to avoid this particular section of the hotel for people that want to sleep in. The rooms seem well isolated as we didn’t experience any noise from outside or neighboring rooms.

Breakfast wasn't a great experience. The selection itself is sufficient but the real problem is the abysmal service; there is only 1 coffee machine and staff that are supposed to serve coffee are mostly nowhere to be seen (with the notable exception of Florin and Joseph). I tried the omelet on first day and it’s the worse I ever had, 2 days later with a different cook I tried again and it wasn’t much better. Overall this part has been a very poor experience for all of our 6 days.
The private beach is closeby and although small very nice; however due to construction works nearby it’s impossible to relax on working days. The service at the beach as well as at the pool is good; the only downside of the pool is that smoking is allowed (despite the hotel claiming to provide a smoke-free environment), otherwise there are sufficient number of sun beds. The gym is very large and the indoor pool, sauna and steam room are great.

The hotel is in walking distance of cafes and restaurants around the bay and there is a shopping complex and cinema opposite to it. A small supermarket can be found just up the street with many pubs around the corner; a bigger supermarket is approx 10 minutes walk following the road passing the private beach. In terms of shops Sliema, 10 minutes by bus, has a wider selection and this is also the departure point for ferries.

All in all I would try another hotel in Malta on my next visit

We had a nice stay at the Intercontinental hotel in St Julians last week. The hotel is located in a very busy area with many restaurants and bars. More so it is also located right next to Paceville which is a very lively bar street/area rather Ibiza-esque (I know as I was in Ibiza last month too).

That said though, the hotel is not affected by the street noise from the bars outside but if you're looking for a quiet family area then I would probably avoid the Intercontinental. This was for myself and my wife (28-31 yrs old) so worked well for us as we could have food and drinks nearby in the evening.

The rooms are nice and spacious with a separate shower and bath tub in the bathroom. We did end up moving rooms twice though as on the first morning there was a drilling noise which reverberated in the room (due to construction which was apparently not on the hotel complex). They then moved us opposite a cleaning cupboard for our second night to which we were awoken at 8am by the cleaners going into and out of the cupboards to fetch towels and cleaning equipment all morning (a poor choice of second room especially as I had requested a nice quiet area of the hotel after the first room switch).

The third room was absolutely fine - the Intercontinental got there eventually. I have stayed at 5 star resorts before and having to switch rooms twice would typically result in a free room upgrade which did not happen. That would have been a nice touch to make us for the hassle. Joanna the customer services manager was very friendly and did an excellent job of managing the room switches though.

My final comment would be about the hotel staff in general. They all have an excellent attitude and make the guests feel very welcome. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The concierge desk is particularly good (we booked a couple of trips through them) so a special mention should go to Christopher on the concierge desk who was just excellent.

We've just returned from a trip to Malta staying at the Intercontinental.
The hotel is lovely, and the staff friendly and courteous. Excellent breakfast in the alfresco restaurant.

Somewhat disappointed in the triple room - a double room with a temporary bed (smaller than a single - not ideal for a 6' teenager!) and only two chairs, two glasses, two mugs, two sets of toiletries etc. (hence the 4* rating)

Location perhaps could be more central, but Valletta is well served by a very cheap local bus service, so not really an issue.

Pool is lovely, gym looked great, but felt a bit too intimidated by the muscles on display to give it a try.

Harruba restaurant wasn't so great for evening meal (although great dessert selection), but Waterbiscuit restaurant was excellent - hang about reading the menu looking undecided, and the concierge might approach you with a 15% off voucher!

Hotel is nice, ask for a quiet room facing the pool/garden. The concierge were fantastic and really made our holiday with some excellent recommendations! Christopher was really very helpful throughout our holiday!
