“Never again!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 December 2008

I have chosen Interconti due to nice location near ST.Julians, where all island's night life is happening. We were making check-in in midnight and spent 3 hours for it because reception employee didn't want to provide us rooms which were initially booked (we pre-ordered bed type and floor in advance and hotel has confirmed it). Next negative surprise was waiting us in the morning when we went to breakfast. Breakfast room was crowded and very dirty (pieces of food and garbage on the floor), waiters didn't clean tables in time. Food itself was very average, coffee was impossible to drink, fresh juices were impossible to order even as extra. Hotel rooms were beautiful with comfortable bed and good bath facilities. Cleaning services were very poor. Interconti is advitising itself as a hotel with SPA but actually this "SPA" is a little poorly equiped beauty studio with no spa services (just ordinary facial, manicure, pedicure and couple variants of massage). Hotel employees are not friendly at all. There is a pool area on the roof and while there were a little wind hotel employees was taking off sun umbrellas. There were a lot of people with little kids and they were asking don't move umbrellas but hotel employees just were rude and have not listen to people with kids at all. I have seen many tourist at the reception blaming and arguing about hotel services. It seems hotel is not focused on customer care at all. It can be ok for a 1-2 nights stay but i don't recommend this place for vacation.

We booked a junior suite @ the Inter - it was very spacious with a huge(!) bed. It also had a seating area leading onto a balcony overlooking the sea. The bathroom was great with a romantic double ended bath and seperate shower. The room also had pay per view movies -gr8 for a night in.

My partner is a big gym buff. The Gym was massive and had everything you could need. (it was used to train Brad Pitt for the film ''Troy''.

The hotel is conveniently located. It has a cinema next door showing british films. There are an amundance of 5* restaurants in Malta.

We've stayed at some fantastic hotels around the world and this is definetly one of our favourite holidays!

Given all the other excellent reviews from people staying at this hotel when you are booked in at Club Level it is hard to add anything extra. Many thanks to our fellow trip advisor member 'ricjackal ' who I contacted after reading the excellent review to ask what room he was staying in. We completely forgot to ask the hotel for the same room but..rather strangely..we were actually put in the same room so there is really nothing I can add to that excellent review of the same room! He sums it up really well and yes it was just great!

Paying that little bit extra for such a fantastic room at that level really does add that something special to the holiday. In with the room price we had wonderful buffet breakfasts served up to 11.00am, a continous supply of soft drinks (including bottles of mineral water) all day as well as tea and coffee. They also serve a lovely afternoon tea with little sandwiches..mini scones..cakes..etc...and then of course between 6.00 and 8.00pm canapes, dips, etc and virtually any alcoholic drink you fancy (just help yourself!). It really makes it good value for money.

We can see why some of the reviews on here have not been good however. If you are not at Club Level then some of the hotel rooms could prove problematic. There appear to be many rooms facing the main street which is not only noisy but there would be absolutely no danger of you bothering to use a very small balcony either. Some of the non Club Level rooms are lower down and never seem to catch any sun..and probably appear gloomy once you are in them..so be careful. If you are not going to book at Club Level (floors 12-15) then I would suggest always asking for a room as high as possible and facing out so you can see the pool.

We used the indoor pool extensively for exercise, or tried to, but it was very full a lot of the time but then no doubt this was due to the poor weather.

We personally didn't find much to attract us in Paceville itself for an evening out. We wanted to find somewhere to eat which was pretty..and quiet...and you have to start walking out of Paceville to find this and toward St Julian's Bay. Paceville is very noisy at night. It is full of nightclubs which pound music out until very late and you are surrounded by mostly teenagers. They are all very good natured but it wasn't quite what we had in mind for a romantic night out.

If you start going down some side streets you will find quiet little bistros..and St Julians itself has a pretty little bay and lots of Italian restaurants facing the waterfront. It's less than a 10 minute walk. On the way to St Julians is The Hilton Hotel which is situated near a stunning private harbour which has lots of restaurants which had a lovely atmosphere..slightly older crowd..but also people with children. You pay a little bit more for the setting but the food was excellent. Maltese wine is relatively cheap and and is really very nice and there were many vegetarian options at these restaurants for me.

We also hired a car which the hotel arranged. As the weather wasn't brilliant we wanted to go out and about. Driving in Malta is...hair raising! A lot of the roads are in a terrible state..drivers pay no attention to any road markings..speed limits..do not indicate..and road signs are mostly non existent or misleading. It took us 2 days to find somewhere which actually sold a road map of the island. However, if you have driven in London or any major City in the UK then it shouldn't faze you. If you have not..it might well do!

Hotel staff were courteous, polite and our room was cleaned promptly and quickly each day and was also supplied with fresh free canapes, mineral water and free newspaper. We also had free internet connection and a continous fresh supply of mini soaps, shampoo, conditioner, body wash etc.

Some of the hotel food is pretty poor. For various reasons we ended up ordering room service one night and it was inedible so we called the chap back who bought it and on taking a look at it even he was shocked. The hotel, however, prompty refunded our money. Paranga restaurant (next to the hotel's beach) is not worth it. It was lovely to sit by the water and eat but the food is average and expensive for what you get and that was the one restaurant we visited that seemed to offer the least amount of vegetarian options on the menu. My husband had fish - but he had more bones than fish which made the meal tortuous! Eastern Breeze in the hotel is by far the best restaurant. Beautiful food, presented well and superbly cooked. The staff are attentive and this comes highly recommended.

We had a storm one night and got no sleep due to the umbrellas on the balcony above us shifting about in their concrete bases. It was irritating and if it had gone on another night we would have asked for something to be done but apart from that we had no complaints about the hotel at all.

All in all an excellent hotel but as other reviewers have pointed out, what makes it really good value is staying at Club Level. Whether you get a good deal if you are not, I am really not so sure to be honest.

We did enjoy a night at the Casino which is near The Westin and a very short walk from the hotel. Easy to register to gain entry (need to take passport) and it was great fun!!

  • Liked — Stunning room with three balconies..the views..being at Club Level
  • Disliked — Nothing apart from those pesky umbrellas in their concrete bases on the balcony above us!

We stayed at this hotel during the week beginning October 20th.

More than anything - the best thing in this hotel is the staff. From the most junior chamber maid to the most senior manager we found the staff friendly, polite, well trained and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

We stayed at Club level with access to the Club Lounge (which is one of the best we have ever used - and that includes InterContinentals, Hiltons and Marriotts in 5 continents during the last 5 years). But, standard rooms at this hotel are very cheap and cannot be compared with the Hilton - whose prices are very much higher.

I cannot add much to what other Club level reviewers have said. This is an excellent hotel in a prime spot for those staying without children. The club/disco area of Malta is no more than 200 metres away - for young couples/singles. There is a mega cinema complex adjacent, showing up to date films and a 10-pin bowling alley also nearby. Across the road is a shopping mall. So, for the over-60s, much in preponderance at this time of the year, it is also a good spot.

However, our older daughter stayed with her very young family at the Westin last June and I think that this is better situated for this type of group.

Within short walking distance of the ICH are dozens of terrific restaurants of various types and we only ate dinner in the hotel once (at the Asian Fusion) so cannot comment on the other resturants - but the Asian meal was good. We found the breakfasts satisfactory, both in the Club Lounge and Dining Room (we tried both).

What else? Well the free in-room internet access saved me a fortune (I need to spend at least an hour a day on this, for my work). The fresh bowl of fruit in our room every day helped also.

Second visit to this hotel. Disappointing as allocated suite into which fold up beds were literally squeezed for the kids- absolutely not 5 star treatment. Staff v apologetic but hotel full so no alternative possible. Our booking (made previous November) was altered several times by hotel reservations without consulting us which was rather worrying and undoubtedly led to the panicked squeezing in of extra furniture at last minute (too much fiddling!) Previous stay we were given 2 large double beds in bedroom- strangely allocated to couples instead this time!! Result of optimisation of reservations bonus scheme perhaps!? However as per IHC policy we were refunded 1 night's accomodation for the [--]up- sadly didn't make up for the squashed living accomodation, disappointment and hassle factor.
Ominously while we waited to complain heard other regular visitor threaten to move to Hilton as also unhappy with room (regular business user)
Will book elsewhere next time.

Just returned from a great week at the Intercontinel hotel, Malta. This hotel was really good and would recommend up grading to the lovely Club rooms. (Booked via Malra Direct - Best deals to be found here!)

The use of the club lounge was amazing and we enjoyed canapés, sushi and white wine all complementary every evening on our stay. Not to mention the soft drinks and shorts. All in the club price.

The staff were the most friendly we have come across on our travels. The concierge was really helpful before we decided to book as we were enquiring about Padi diving nearby, we actually were going to stay at the Hilton but to this day we are still awaiting a return of our email queries, so we went to the Inter continental instead. The nearest Diving centre is 150 yards away from the Hotel run by Cresta Dive Centre (First class diving outfit - Would highly recommend > Website is www.crestadivecentre.com )

Nice touches bed turned down each evening and chocolates left for us, fresh towels and room cleaned while we were at dinner. We thought breakfast had a large choice and something for everyone, I had the indoor pool to myself each morning where I was able to burn off the calories from the breakfast. The pool deck was clean and plenty of sun loungers for everyone. We ate in the garden restaurant where staff were attentive and the food was delicious. The rooms was fitted with aircon…as it was not very hot we slept with the balcony door open and did not hear any noise.

Definately one of the hotels we would go back to.

I am writing this during our last night of a 7-day stay. I wonder whether reviewers HamptOnian67 and Ljmc29 stayed at the same hotel as our experiences were completely at variance.

However, we are staying at Club level with access to the Club Lounge (which is one of the best we have ever used - and that includes InterContinentals, Hiltons and Marriotts in 5 continents during the last 5 years). I suppose they were in the standard levels, which we have not experienced. But, standard rooms are very cheap and cannot be compared with the Hilton - whose prices are very much higher.

Within short walking distance of the ICH are dozens of terrific restaurants of various types, so we only ate dinner in the hotel once (at the Asian Fusion) so cannot comment - but the Asian meal was good. BTW, the reviewer who criticised the breakfasts must have had a one-off experience, because we found them more than satisfactory (we used the general breakfast rather than the restricted ones in the Club Lounge).

What else? Well the free in-room internet access saved me a fortune (I need to spend at least an hour a day on this, for my work). The fresh bowl of fruit in our room every day helped also. But, more than anything - the best thing in this hotel is the staff. From the most junior chamber maid to the most senior manager we found the staff friendly, polite, well trained and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble for them. To those who found them otherwise I can only say that our experience was completely different.
