for fairness of rating purposes, this is the second review of this property; same stay.

the second room, at a 50EU upcharge was acceptable, and i've rated the hotel, on the basis of the second room, average.

the Hotel Management made a billing adjustment to reflect my dissatisfaction with room 1005, for one night.

don't stay in 1005 or any room that has not been refurbished. they really should not be using these rooms. i arrived extremely late and had no alternative as they were sold out. among the problems: dirty, stains in carpet and fabrics, no working a/c, showerhead unattached, bed mattress worn and uncomfortable. generally creepy. slept with the lights on.

next day i was moved, at a 50eu upcharge, to 1426.

in order to be completely fair, i have written a second review. see second review

Arrived at this hotel 25th September 2010 for 1 week, booked with Diamond Resorts. Arrived in the early hours of the Sunday morning... what an experience. Nothing could have prepared me for the neon lights, bucking broncos, bungee jump, crowds of people sitting and lying on the pavements drinking, dubious characters outside the hotel entrance... All the brochures I read before we travelled said the private sandy beach was only 150 metres away, and the nightlife was nearby. They omitted to say that the nightlife is nearer than the beach, in fact virtually outside the front door!

HOWEVER, as soon as you walk into the lobby of the Intercontinental, you don't know that is going on outside. Its BEAUTIFUL. Very bright and airy, tranquil and relaxing, beautifully furnished and clean. Check-in was very easy, good directions to our suite (very complicated layout to the hotel, I'm quite sure we didn't see the whole hotel while we were there, and did get lost twice!)

Diamond suites are in a dedicated wing of the hotel. We had a 2 bedroom suite with kitchen facilities, large terrace and jacuzzi. I'd perhaps have sacrificed the jacuzzi for a balcony with views of the gardens as they were really lovely. The suite was beautifully furnished, as always with Diamond, though perhaps some elements are due for an update (the air conditioning was noisy, not very effective, and sometimes had a strange odour, and the carpet is ready for cleaning / replacement).

We made use of the indoor leisure facilities as well the rooftop pool during our stay. We ate in the Harruba restaurant (buffet) which was lovely (meal was a little expensive, but we benefited from a 20% discount from Diamond) but the Maltese wine was beautiful and very reasonable. We also dined in Carissa one evening, and the piece de resistance was Eastern Breeze, the Asian restaurant. Really really beautiful.

Service throughout the week was very good, from the reception staff to the concierge, to housekeeping and restaurant staff. One of our party has special dietary requirements, with wheat and dairy free diet, and staff were more than accommodating and cooked special meals for her.

Locally, we dined at Parapett one evening, and at Portomaso marina another evening. Once you get away from the gawdy nightlife there is a good choice of restaurants. Highly recommend trying Parapett, and good range of choice at Portamaso.

The hotel offered an organised trip round the island, but we decided to make our own way to Vallette and Mdina using public transport. Well worth the trip, Mdina is just beautiful.

Would agree with the musty smell in the rooms. I do beleive it is due to the humidity levels and the amount of draperies, carpeting furniture and bedding in the rooms. However it did not spoil our trip. The staff were exceptional and the people the friendliest and most helpful we have ever met. What a gem of a country.
The hotel is located in the heart of things but quiet enough to be away from all the noise and action, great location.
The club lounge staff and James and Robert were the best!

Don't expect any VIP treatment if you're a Holiday Inn Rewards Platinum Elite member at this Hotel!! Apparently the privileges do not apply to Intercontinental (even though they are part of the same group!). We were not given access to Executive Lounge either. We queried the whole matter with HI on our return - what are the benefits of having Elite status? - but were quoted the T & Cs. By contrast Hilton VIPs have always given us an upgraded room, or if not available, complimentary meals and/or Executive Lounge access. The only luxury afforded to us was a bowl of fruit, ie one apple, one banana, small bunch of grapes and a plum and one bottle of water (between 2 adults and 2 children). The first room we were given was next to a lift shaft - noise throughout the night - with a shared balcony in a dark corner of the hotel. We were moved after we complained however. Reception staff were not as friendly as we had hoped. Whilst the public areas of the hotel are impressive, bedrooms were average and cramped. We had booked a deluxe family room but were only given a standard room. Location was excellent, as was the Concierge and cleaning staff. Did not eat in the hotel but there is plenty of choice in the nearby mall and surrounding area. Rooftop pool area good with sufficient sunbeds, though you have to be up early to grab a bed close to the pool. Final straw for us was being asked to pay almost £100 for a late checkout room - we chose to use the 'changing facilities next to the indoor pool' - which could be likened to a sauna with no electric facilities for hairdrying etc. Malta itself was very good, though expensive, apart from the bus service which we used often. Would definitely return to Malta but not to this hotel.

We were on the executive floor and the whole package from rooms to lounges to in house restaurants were all very very good. Only complain will be the service at the pool area, they can do with some good training for the pool staff, also beer should only be served cold!

A good located hotel in Saint Julien, close to restaurants, pubs and stores. Rooms are nice, comfortable, with a nice balcony. Swimming pool seems nice (not used as it was cold weather). The terrase invite u to stay there. Food was good, not the best. Only for 1 euro you can take the bus go to Valleta and explore this stunning marvel in the Mediterranean Sea.
