“Good hotel for a break to Malta”
Reviewed 29 April 2010

We had a great time here. If you want to know more about the hotel's location, look at the webcam on the hotel's website. It's just below a balcony and it gives a very good idea about the immediate area. The bus stop is just over the road.

Inside, it's all fine. Good size bathrooms, comfortable rooms - clean and tidy.

The staff were really good. Helpful on the desk about the bus service - buses to Valletta just take any 60 something bus except the 65. (Double check with them in case I got bus numbers and bus pass ages confused). Good service in the Cafe Juliana - nice to come back for tea and cake in the afternoon after walking miles round various bits of Malta, or coffee after dinner. The room staff were friendly and helpful.

It's a good place to be - a previous reviewer mentions a bit of noise at the weekend but the police station is just two doors down - they often come out for smoke breaks, so are aware of what is going around them. We had sea view rooms - it was not an issue for us.

There are lots of restaurants around - it might be as well to book at weekends. Some are pretentious and over priced - others are more geared to locals - good value and excellent food. We would recommend Bouzouki, a Greek restaurant overlooking the water.

If you go straight over the road and walk round the right hand side of the bay, you come to Sliema. Go left and walk past the Marina area and you eventually get to the touristy hotel end of St Juliens - with shops and facilities to match.

We got the taxi driver who was assigned to us at the airport ,(you pay the fare bit in advance at the desk), to take us to the Neolithic sites. He gave us lots of information and it was a good price for a half day.

Would recommend the Hotel Juliani - I expect we'll go back. We might prefer it out of season - though the swimming pool on the roof, which was worth a visit for the views, would be tempting in the summer.

We stayed at the Juliana in April 2010 and were caught by the Ash Crisis.(Not the Hotel’s fault we hasten to add.)

We had Room 501 (which is described as a Junior Suite) at the front of the hotel over-looking the small bay. In my world, a Suite should have more than one room – this is more a large room plus a small balcony.
The room was certainly clean and well kept, with two easy chairs and a coffee table. There was plenty of storage space. The room has a safe, which I believe should be mandatory in any hotel.
The TV did not have many English speaking Channels but had Sky News – very useful in the “Ash Crisis”. There was also a DVD Player (which we did not use.)

The bathroom (with Jacuzzi) was clean and came with the usual complement of shampoos and stuff.

The room had Air Conditioning – which failed one night, but was fixed fairly promptly.

As the room was at the front it overlooked the main coast road. Once the balcony doors were shut the room was reasonably quiet, except for Saturday and Sunday nights. Just up the road is one of the main clubbing areas and the clientele were noisy when leaving.

As mentioned by a previous review, you can request coffee making facilities, so a week before we arrived we requested coffee making facilities – this transpired to be a kettle – we had to request the cups. Also there was no actual coffee. So if you want to make coffee (or tea) then take your own – or use the Supermarket – the nearest is 100 yards to the right from the Hotel.

We also requested a Taxi to pick us up from the airport – this was useful and at a reasonable cost.

All the staff were extremely helpful and friendly at all times.

The Breakfast provided was a help-yourself buffet, including a wide variety of fruit, pastries and cooked items. It was also possible to order freshly cooked items (eg omelettes). The hotel readily provided a Packed Lunch when we left early in the morning for our flight.

We do think that the true test of a hotel is how they handle crises. As mentioned we were caught by the Ash Crisis. We were due to leave on Sunday, but all flights were cancelled, so we were “trapped”. The hotel rose to the occasion, not only allowing us to continue in our room but at a reduced rate. (Other hotels had raised their rates.) They also had a laptop which was freely available to guests so that we could arrange our flights as easily as possible. I guess a criticism could be that they only had one so that when most of the hotel needed access to the internet we had to queue.

We ate once at Zest – The East/West Restaurant. This was very good, but expensive. Definitely worth at least one visit – but there are plenty of alternatives near by – ranging from MacDonald’s (virtually next door) and Pizzerias all the way up to more formal restaurants. Most were to the left of the hotel. We would recommend Bianco’s and Lorenzo’s. After a good meal it was very pleasant to walk round the harbour.

Hints & Tips on Malta
Malta will be nice when it is finished – there is a lot of building going on.
Use the Buses – an adventure most of the time. They pick up and drop off just outside the Hotel. It is 47 cents to Valetta and takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on the traffic and the driver. The bus station at Valetta looks chaotic – but actually works quite well.

The hop-on / hop-off buses are a reasonable way to see the Islands, but they run every hour, which means that you either rush round a particular site to get back within the hour or spend two hours at a site.

If you want to see the Hypogeum book before you arrive on the Island. The earliest tickets available when we arrived were for May 20th. You can get some late tickets from the Museum of Fine Arts – but they are only for two tours (only ten people per tour) on the next day and it is first come first served, usually queues were forming before 09:00am.. One of the benefits of the Ash Crisis was that were able to get tickets in the quiet week, because no-one was getting onto the island.
You can see most of Malta in a week with some planning.

Went to Malta for 3 days and stayed at the Juliani. Was given a room on the 5th floor that faced the bay. Spectacular views of St Julians Bay. The room itself was large and spacious, had airconditioning, a few flat screen TV's, DVD's, telepone and a mini bar. Wifi access was free and the speeds were reasonably good. The bathroom had a powerful show and a jacuzzi. For the money I paid, it was a a fantastic room.

I took a few clients out to thier pan asian resturant. The ambiance was really good, the service was prompt and friendly and the food was good. Its the right place if you are into sushi or want a good curry. This is quite an upscale restuarant - so be prepared to pay a bit. But if you are taking a client or perhaps someone special or if someone else is paying for your meal - then its perfect..

If I go to Malta again, I will ceratinly stay here.

We had a wonderful time in Malta and this hotel was perfect for us. The location of the hotel made it easy to see most of Malta. Spinola Bay was gorgeous with it's clear blue water. The buses stop right outside the hotel and they only cost 47 euro cents!

The free wifi is just what a family with teenagers needs and the included breakfast was terrific. The staff was kind, helpful and gracious. By far, the best meal we had in Malta was at the Hotel's restaurant, Zest - east meets west perfectly!

I picked this hotel because of the excellent reports, they were not wrong. The area was a little too urbane for liking and Malta was more crowded than I anticipated however, the hotel was in an excellent position considering this.
We had an Ambassador suit and the room was spacious, clean and comfortable, the bathroom equally good and the room servicing excellent.
Perhaps the only criticism I could impose would involve the free 'car parking', they only have room for about eight small cars, if you'r back late and number nine you've got a problem.
An altogether first class hotel and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

We only stayed here for one night as we wanted to tour the islands hotels an locations. This was by far the best north to south. The staff were warm and welcoming with everything you would want in a Top Class hotel.

I would recommend the rooms with views over the harbour rather than the internal rooms but both were equally nice.

The hotel has a chabby chic beachcomer style, white and copper green with fresh lines and inviting communal areas.

We really liked the breakfast, the choice was extensive and fresh. Also there were nice touches like 10% in there restaraunt and free DVD rental.

Location is perfect, it's really the ONLY area with nightlife, bars and food in the evening with paceville and sliema very close. Transport is always a joy in Malta and you can get almost anywhere on the buses (which stop right outside) for less than €1!!!! amazing. Do Not take a taxi tere really is no point with such a good bus service. A day pass is only €3.49 for unlimited bus travel.

All in all a great place to stay, with all the things you want to be nice being superb. We would not hesitate to return.

Thanks!!

We stayed at this hotel March 13th - 19th, the service was extremely good, especially Ilsham at reception and Rose at the bar, we wanted for nothing. The rooms are cleaned to a high spec, with maids that were pleasant and with smiles. The rooms over looking the bay with balcony are a must, they are big and decorated to a high standard. The bathrooms are good with jacuzzi baths and all the little extras " shower gels, soaps, etc etc. Reading other reviews i have to agree with them i cannot fault this hotel in any way, we travel to Malta on a regular basis, and other hotels we have stayed in cannot match this hotel, for comfort or service.
