Alexandra Hotel Malta
Ranked #23 of 33 Hotels in Saint Julian's
Reviewed 21 June 2008

Hotel centrally situated for St Julian's bay and Paceville nightlife. Despite this not too noisy.

Air-con rooms good but beds rather hard. TV only 1 English channel (BBC World) - surprise for Malta. Very small balcony. Bath water brown tinged but not harmful. Bonuses are good rooftop pool/lounging area and sun terrace and downstairs bar/lobby area. Staff very friendly.

Brakfast buffet OK. Boiled eggs and 1 of scrambled/fried, sausages (good), bacon (fatty), toms, beans, bread/rolls, preserves, fruit (melon), processed cheese/mystery meat slices, cereals, tea, coffee, juices.

Dinner buffet (unlimited) very good (add-on €10 for B/B tarriff). Soups, salad, pasta, fish, meat courses and top-notch desserts.

All in all - worth the bucks.

Gozo full-day excursion unmissable - totally different from Malta. Also Valletta city and Grand Harbour area great one day walking tour.

We have spent 3 nights at Alexandra hotel at the end of May. The main reason for choosing this hotel was location and availability. Hotel location is superb. Just around the corner from the hotel, there are many restaurants, bars, shops, a bus stop and a rocky beach. Even though this beach was full of broken glasses and rubbish, people were swimming, fishing and sunbathing there. St Julian's area was very lively at night but we didn't hear
any street noise from our hotel room. 5 minutes down the road, promemade path leading to Silema begins.

Our twin room on the second floor had a balcony facing the street, not much of a view there. The room was spacious but very run down with no soundproofing. This hotel was full of loud youngsters (late 10s to early 20s). People were banging, slamming doors and talking in the corridors throughout the night and morning. Even though we couldn't hear anything from
the nearby busy street, the noise within the building was a problem. Beds were old and soft but comfortable enough. Bed sheets were old and grey- they looked at least 10 years old.

Bathroom was spacious but again very old. Probably it was clean but because it was so rundown and rusty everything looked dirty. Only a couple of cheap mini soap bars were provided so it was good we brought our own shampoo & shower
gels etc.

Breakfast was simply disgusting. Stale bread, cheese, ham, hot food including scrambled eggs & bacon looked off colour. Breakfast room was ugly, dirty, full of loud people. We felt like we were at a cheap hostel rather than a 3 start hotel. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel after the first attempt.

Every morning at 9am, a maid knocked and opened the door at the same time, asking if we needed a cleaning service on the day. It was quite annoying!

There was only one receptionist at a time. Each time we had to wait about 5 minutes to retrieve our room key as the receptionist on duty was always on the phone. Checking-in and out took a while as one staff was dealing with 3 different guests as well as answering the phone. Staff were friendly but wouldn't say they are efficient!

The mordern Portmoso complex by the marina is within 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Restaurants there offer excellent food, a lovely view of marina and friendly service. Pricey but worth it.

Overall, this hotel certainly provides a great location but nothing else. Everything is just so old and rundown. It would've been better off staying at a hostel.

My friend and I stayed at this hotel in the first week of May. We had a double room with two single beds, and a private bathroom. The room cost us 20 euros each per night.

The hotel is in a good location in Saint Julian's. It is near some great restaraunts and is just an easy walk to the bus stops which easily got us all around the island.

However, the hotel itself is not too flash. Our room was very outdated and smelt of a mixture of cigarettes and wet dog. The bed linen and pillows should have been thrown out 10 years ago. The housekeeping staff barely bothered to make the beds each day, they just pulled the covers roughly over the beds. The toilet made a lot of noise after it was flushed, beware if you need to do this in the middle of the night as you or your neighbours won't get back to sleep for half an hour. However, I had to keep in mind that it only cost 20 euros.

Breakfast was extremely average, and we didn't bother with it after the first morning, however, what more do I expect for this low price.

The hotel was noisy, not the fault of the hotel, but there were a lot of stag parties and teams staying there. Any noise made in the central pool area will be heard by all rooms as they are situated around it.

All in all, this hotel is definately not the hilton, however, it was cheap and situated in a good location. If you can forgo luxuries to save some money (and don't plan to spend much time in your room), this would be a good choice.

After reading the reviews on this hotel i was a bit concerned but from the time we checked in we had a wonderful time. The staff were fantastic especially the young barman who does the night shift. He sat with us several nights for a chat and would leave free snacks out for us, he even made us up a plate of sandwiches one night out of the blue! The other staff were great too and couldnt do enough for you. Admittedly the rooms were a little worn but they were very clean and maids came in every single day, made beds and left clean towels. The food in the restaurant was good and plentiful, although might not be enough choice for kids. you can go up as often as you like and the puddings were lovely. The pool on the roof is covered like a conservatory and it gets very warm up there, its quite small and gets busy. This leads to a roof terrace for sunbathing. The other pool is situated in the middle of the hotel with rooms all around it, again this is small and doesnt see much sun. The hotel is very close to the nightlife and the main shopping complex but not close enough to disturb your sleep. There is a rocky bay right by the hotel and a man made beach about 5/10 minutes walk away. The main bus terminal is just up the road and you can get buses from here to all over the island. Ask any of the bus drivers for a time table and explore the island its amazing! Short journeys 50C longer trips 1euro 16C max. Dont miss a bus trip to Marsaxlokk (pronounced marsashlok) To me this is the true malta, traditional, fishermen mending nets, colourful boats. It is like stepping into another world, so different to the rest of the island. They have a fantastic market on a sunday selling clothes, bags, shoes, jewellery and souveniers etc this is also the main fish market and they have everything from squid and octopus to swordfish. All the locals go on sunday so its got a great atmosphere! This was my third time in malta and i would definately stay at the alexandra again.

We had a great time in Malta. The hotel staff were really pleasant and took time out to talk to us. The breakfast was great and plenty of choice. The room was perfectly clean and we are hoping to go back again next year!

We were in malta for a long weekend break for a friend's wedding and staying at the Alexandra. As it was winter the pool was out of use. Reception were very friendly and helpful when we checked in, room was ok. Two single beds, same problem with the patio doors, but I managed to suss those out after a while.

Have to say that the bathroom was slightly grubby, and breakfast not great but overall, a good location and price is excellent! We had no problems with it at all.

We have recently come back from a stay in malta's alexandras palace. When we got there we were early so the gave us a room for us to put our bags this room was locked when we had come back. I believe that the hotel could have done more to give us information on how they run etc keys, cleaners and what we can rent. The room was satisfactory for what we have paid for but it does not reach the star grading if you were to class it to britians hotels. We had problems with the toilet it wouldnt stop flushing however my fiancee sorted that out. Other problems is that we relised near the end of our stay that it was possible to get into our room from the balcony patio door, as it didnt lock!! We had b n b so we had breakfast at the hotel it met my expectations of what it was going to be like they gave you a choice of toast, cereal, fruit, buns, cakes and for the full english it would normally consume three of the following scrambled egg or fried, sausages, bacon and beans. Now for the facilites I did not find very impressive there was entertainment one night which was karoke. The pools wernt that brill either I never went in the outside one as the weather was rubbish but I went in the indoors which is located at the top of the hotel. It is what you see in the pictures just abit more run down. I dont think the drainage system was to good either as I saw small clumps of hair floating about. For the tv the english channel you get is sky world news and some movie channel. The bathroom was average I must say the shower was abit dissapointing my fiancee had to crouch to fit under and I can describe it as a hose rather that a shower. I did not have any problems with the beds. The view was rather rubbish as there are lots and lots of cranes everywhere on this island so if you want views it aint so good. The overall area was ok but make sure you look around the beach is about 10min walk and you can find it if you walk past all the nightlife area. There is also a big shopping mall which is worth a look if you like to have a abit of a shop. Going back to the beach its very small but it is however very nice unfortantly they decided to dig it up half way through our holiday but the water was rather clear but it does get busy. There is also another rocky beach right next to the hotel but that is in such a state it has rubbish and glass everywhere so be careful. We found food at times hard to get well good quality anyway try going to bella napoli thats nice. If you have any questions you think I could help you with dont heisitate to ask.
