This restaurant is away from the main high street and relies on patrons making a dedicated journey. Our welcome and drinks order were taken by an unsmiling waitress. Settling back we could now take in the restaurant decor: Mediterranean colours but no Mediterranean sunlight made the interior rather dark, not helped by a few nonfunctioning lightbulbs.
The food was very ordinary. Tellingly, the waiting staff exhibited no real pride or interest in the dishes being served but slapped them down.
Wholesome Italian food doesn't need to be complicated, and fresh produce artfully presented is always a winner. Sadly not at this restaurant however.

After reading the positive reviews we were looking forward to trying the food at Lo Stivale, unfortunately we were disappointed. The breaded prawn starter consisted of identically shaped processed medallions which were not particularly tasty; the baked goats cheese was cold and when returned we received the same dish just slightly blackened. Mains were two tomato based pastas which whilst OK, were really nothing special so we chose not to stay for desert. Staff were friendly and helpful but the food does not warrant a second visit.

We last visited this Italian restaurant many years ago.
Encouraged by recent favourable Tripadvisor reviews we booked for dinner with a friend. The booking was taken by a very welcoming man - we were really looking forward to our visit.
When we arrived we could hardly believe our eyes - in this fast-changing world the restaurant seemed totally unchanged from our last visit. Drab furniture and a bit of a museum feel - just like going back to the 80's!.
We were greeted and seated and given menus from which we ordered our meals. Looking around, we realised we were the only diners and the ambience was very quiet, little to look at, nothing at all to grab our attention.
The food arrived at lightning speed - perhaps too fast for comfort.
Starters of Stuffed Mushrooms, Garlic Prawns and Sea-food with Mango were all OK. Mains also appeared very quickly, were vast and filling.
In general, we would have preferred a bit less quantity and a little more quality. The bottle of Italian red wine was fine.
We paid and left, still the only customers.

We love this local restaurant because the team work hard to please their customers. The menu is extensive, this is basic italian food, large portions and at a reasonable quality. Not a place if you are out to impress but if you want a good value meal out with friends or family this will fit the bill

I liked Lo Stivale. With good food and pleasant staff, it is a restaurant that makes you feel comfortable to be in. I had an excellent Halibut ( how often do you see that on a menu these days?) and the whitebait was also very good. Limited parking at the back of the restaurant.
