The Avonlea is a beautiful Bed & Breakfast right on the beach!! Our room was spectacular and the king size bed was super comfy. We enjoyed breakfast on the porch listening to the waves. The service was wonderful and all our needs were met. We can't wait to come back in the Fall!

I'm a bit torn as to how to put this review. Avonlea has a great location with beautiful views of the old harbor. The inn is cozy and the staff were really nice. They make a good breakfast in the morning. For the most part everything was great. The problem was the bed in a room. We stayed in the Sapphire room, (a beautiful roomwith fabulous views)and the bed had a major problem. The center support or box spring has gone bad in the center. This meant that once you got into bed you immediately rolled straight to the center and were sort of stuck there. The bed was also extremely creaky so while you were struggling to roll over or get out you couldn'couldn't help but wake up you partner and possibly the people in the next room. I thought that they must not be aware of the problem so I was sort of shocked when I was telling the inn keeper and she said she knew the bed was broken and they were meaning to fix it!

TIP: If you are staying in Sapphire ask if the bed has been fixed!

We stayed for a weekend before most of the island businesses are open for the summer season and the quiet uncrowded island was a delight.
The inn is charming and welcoming. The innkeepers are wonderful hosts that enhance your experience.
The views from our room were outstanding and the room itself was very cosy. We had a small issue with the boxspring in our room that prevented truly regenerative sleep but I trust that will be taken care of so future guests won't have a concern.
We would stay at Avonlea again on a future visit.

This was our 2nd stay at the Avonlea. Our 1st was only 3 nights...this time we made it 6 to more fully enjoy the views, warm & cozy rooms, sunrises & sunsets; as well as, the delicious breakfast aromas in the morning and the incredible smell of Barnacle Cookies in the afternoon that wafted up the stairs to our room.
While the above are all definite perks, the truly best part was the ambiance set by Meg and Josh.
We plan to return every year, and we will always stay at the Avonlea...it is our special place on Block Island.

Lee and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary with a return trip to Block Island and we stayed in the Diamond Room at Avonlea, just off the lounge with great views of the ocean and with direct access to the porch. The inn is very clean and well-maintained, well-insulated for cool nights, with a warm, friendly atmosphere. The beach is just steps away and it's a short walk to everything in the downtown area. Block Island offers seemingly endless walking trails and, if you don't have a car, bikes can get you everywhere. Meg, the innkeeper, was gracious and accommodating and she and Josh provided both a morning breakfast buffet and evening wine and hors d'oeuvres, giving the guests a chance to socialize and compare experiences. The food Meg and Josh prepared was excellent, although it would have been enhanced by being served with breads and pastries, rather than with saltine crackers and mini-muffins. The barnacle cookies were a treat not to be missed. The room was very clean with comfortable bed and all-around pleasant atmosphere, and there is a refrigerator available off the lounge area for the guests' use. The relaxed approach by Avonlea makes it feel like one's own home, and they provide towels and beach chairs for the warmer days. No hesitation in recommending Avonlea for a Block Island visit.

Room Tip: We loved the Diamond Room, both for size and convenience, but from what we hear, all of the rooms are lovely.
