“An oasis on our journey”

We stopped here for an evening meal en route from Venice to Salzburg.
As already stated, they were dying to practise their English.
One of the nice things about stopping in a countryside restaurant is the opportunity to chat with the locals ...as in any village...curious about strange faces.
My German is fluent, so they homed in on my partner, who speaks none. They really loved chatting to her, and kind of sidelined me...
The food was excellent, and beautifully presented.
We could not stay overnght as we were already booked in to a hotel in Salzburg, but the German couple atthe next table spoke highly of the staff and the accommodation

Some very good and some not so good aspects. In many ways, a traditional Austrian village inn and the right atmosphere. The room was clean, spacious, and the beds comfortable, the bathroom likewise clean and spacious BUT the room was not heated before we arrived; There was nowhere to hang coats other than in the cupboard - not ideal when it's wet outside, which it was. It took ages for the hot water to come through in the bathroom on the first night, but from then on it was fine. Dinner was excellent, the beer likewise, the wine good BUT no wines were listed on the menu, the waiter just announced that he had a "Merlot" and so on. Breakfast was poor, with heated up rolls, although fresh rolls could be bought at least in the next village. The water for tea was tepid (though we did get up a bit late!). The owner and his wife were helpful BUT they were only around very briefly. I understand well that a hotel in this location can't support a family, and indeed the staff were friendly and helpful, but not being from the area not much use for ideas about where to go.
(If you do go here in the months between April and end October, you must go to Nötsch, the next village, with its museum devoted to the Nötsch circle, a very important school of Austrian painters in the first half of the 20th century).

We stayed here after attending a friend's wedding. The guesthouse was lovely and clean, the hotel staff friendly (and happy to have a chance to practice their English!) and the rooms airy and spacious. Having spent the start of our trip in a chain hotel in Graz it was nice to experience a more authentic stay. The surroundings were breathtaking and the roads a pleasure to drive (not surprisingly popular with bikers). The only thing lacking was a bath (which isn't a problem for everyone but I enjoy relaxing with a bath) and the breakfast was not amazing but everything else was perfect. We really enjoyed the stay and would definitely go back (and recommend it for others to go)
