Chalet Sonne
Reviewed 30 March 2013

Chalet Sonne has been a real find. This was our first time skiing in Austria, having skied many years in France. If honest, it would be hard to return to the latter. Maria Alm is so quaint and pretty with plentry of Après Ski and gorgeous restaurants. Add to that the wonderful slopes, despite the warm weather of late March, and you have a fantastic recipe for a fantastic ski holiday. Chalet Sonne was just lovely. Spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated, it was the perfect size for 6 adults, which was the amount of people in it the week we stayed. It would comfortably fit 8 adults and larger parties if that included small children. For the 6 of us, it was cosy and comfortable and not at all claustrophobic. The bedrooms were the best I've experienced in a ski chalet. They were really roomy with plenty of cupboard space, modern bathrooms and the comfiest beds ever. My 15 year old son wanted to bring the bed home with him. Pillows were large and memory foam mattresses helped relax aching muscles (as did the lovely down stairs sauna!). The chalet manager, Steve, and our chalet host Dan were fabulous. Steve has managed two chalets for the same owner, both in Maria Alm, for some years. He took us out skiing one day and we had an ace day learning about the area and skiing without once having to refer to piste maps! Nothing was too much trouble for Steve and his team. If there was anything you didn't like (for example food) they'd organise something special instead. The food was of good quality, but I like sauces with my food and when this was mentioned they even changed the menu to have one of my favourite meals. On top of this, a German friend who taxied us to and from the chalet, as he lives in Austria, was invited by Steve to join us in the chalet the night before and stay for a meal and then overnight so that he didn't need to get up so early to collect us. This was above and beyond normal good business hospitality and makes them stand out head and shoulders above other chalet hosts. We will definitely be coming back and thank Steve and Dan for an amazing skiing treat!

This was our first taste of being in a catered chalet and the experience was wonderful. I will never go self catering again! We were looked after brilliantly with Dan being a great host and making sure we were comfortable and well looked after. We were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and everyone made it special. Steve was great and made us laugh, a lot. Our chalet buddies were also great and each night we were never short of a conversation. The food was good with Dan's eggs being particularly good in the morning. We would thoroughly recommend chalet sonne and will come back for more fun and lots of cake.

You will already have had the chance to read other reviews which I can confirm are true and so you can understand why this is our 5th visit in 5 years. Chalet is superb and well stocked, great having a sauna each night before sitting down to an excellent meal. The chalet staff cater for your every need and are very helpful.

So another memorable holiday with great skiing and laughs - home from home for us all.

Our first stay in Chalet Sonne and we were really impressed, its a cosy, comfortable chalet with spacious bedrooms and comfy beds, plenty of storage space. Beautiful views over the mountains. It was spotlessly clean and we were really well looked after by Dan, the meals were excellent, nothing was too much trouble, even a lift to the lifts in the morning was offered! its only a few minutes walk to the bus stop or dorfjet lift, the ski area is fantastic, hardly any queues and the mountain huts are very high quality, a hut crawl is a must!!
A great week with great company, would definatley return.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a balcony with great views.

Like other reviewers this was my my 3rd visit to Maria Alm and in particular to Chalet Sonne. Like the other years I was not disappointed. Met at the airport by the Steve who more than looked after us, with a guided ski trip of the Ski circus. Well worth purchasing the Ski Paradise lift pass, its only 20euros more and it opens up a HUGE area of skiiing...with or without trees! The Chalet Host, Dan was excellant and we had a great day out with him in Kaprun, and the Wednesday Tobogannig was great fun. The meals were excellent and Dan was evey bit a top chalet host, nothing was to much trouble. We also shared the chalet with 2 other couples who were a great laugh and we shared many tips on the best mountian huts and chalets.....the Smokey hut and Goat hut being our top 2....if you go try and find them. We met a few other English people out there and they are all of the same opinion. Its so beautiful you don't want to tell people as you want to be selfish and keep it to yourself. I would reccomend Chalet Sonne to anybody. A great goliday destination to get your ski mojo back :-)

Room Tip: All the upstairs rooms have a balcony so all is good.

We stayed at Chalet Sonne as our 3rd trip to Maria Alm and we weren't dissappointed at all. The Chalet is cosy, the rooms are very comfortable, well laid out with plenty of storage and Dan who looked after us for the week was an absolute star. The views from the chalet are lovely and you are only a 3-4 minute walk straight into town. Maria Alm is a fabulous little village with great restaurants and Apres Ski bars. We love it and can't wait until we go back ther in March. Thanks again guys, great stay!

We were two families (4 adults and 5 kids) and stayed at the Chalet Sonne. The house has a lovely location just 5 mins walk from the village, hardly any through traffic and with a large grassy open space infromt ....perfect for anyone with energy leftover for outdoor games. Beautiful view from the terrace onto the nearby mountains. The house is as good as it looks on the photos....if not better! Space for all and a wonderful sauna, games room (kids), bar upstairs. Everything was in tip top order (oven, washing machine etc.). Just perfect.
Maria Alm is small...it is after all still a village ....but has more of a small town feel to it. The locals were in our experience always very friendly. In fact it does them great credit given the amount of tourists they must see. Places to eat out are rather limited in Maria Alm. We opted to order some take aways (from the main menu) of the local Italian which is also a good option if you want to drink your own wine and chill out in the house. Fresh rolls in the morning from the baker for breakfast.
The Edelweiss Ski School in Maria Alm was brilliant. For both lessons and ski hire. Small classes. Fair prices. The instructors were without exception all great with the kids making the classes a lot of fun and taking them far and wide on different slopes to different villages all along the valley. Every day was an adventure for them and they all learned so much and so fast.
The whole Austrian ski experience here at Chalet Sonne - Maria Alm is just perfect for a family.
