This hotel was a positive surprise. Ultramodern but very functional, rooms are very comfortable and pleasant. Bar and restaurant downstairs are very good and welcoming. For any visit to Genk, its the ideal. We will return.

We stayed at this hotel last week while visiting a friend who lived nearby. He said that this hotel was supposedly the best hotel in Genk. Sad to say that this hotel did not meet our expectations.

We arrived at noon having emailed the hotel beforehand to let us know that we would need an early check in. This was not granted, upon arrival our room wasn't ready. We asked the female receptionist to check again if there was any room available as we would not be back until midnight, but she just wouldn't listen and sent us away while keeping our luggage after confirming our booking.

We arrived past midnight and this time it was a guy at the reception desk. The male receptionist asked us for booking confirmation and credit card guarantee again despite we have confirmed everything (booking & provided credit card guarantee) in the afternoon with his colleague. The lack of communication between the staff was disappointing and the whole service was inefficient.

Too tired to argue, we took our key and went to sleep immediately. The next day we came down for breakfast and we were stopped by the restaurant staff who asked for our breakfast vouchers; we weren't given any although we booked a package with breakfast included.

We were made to go to reception to ask for the vouchers, and I made a remark about this to the same female receptionist. She gave us our vouchers without apologising.

The breakfast was underwhelming, very few selections and not very fresh, the coffee was ok.

Aside from the location, I cannot recommend this hotel. Poor communication, inefficient staff and poor value for money.

The Carbon hotel in Genk promises so much. The building itself is sleek against the greyness of Genk. The entrance, slightly unconventional, leads on up to a rather dark, and not so atmospheric mezzanine floor where the “check bench “is. The staff are suitably slick though in saying this are very helpful. The ground floor is taken up with the restaurant but more on that later.

The rooms are suitable deconstructed; bathroom in the bedroom construction. Works perfectly in a warmer climate but I am not convinced that steaming in a hot shower filling ones room with said steam is very pleasurable. I was lucky enough to have one of the monumental rooms on the second floor (see photos.) The room was stylish but very dark. Subtle lighting doesn’t help alas. The cavernous room lacks warmth and in my case (in early May) actual warmth. Fiddling with the airco mechanism is useless. Eventually after a trip to the reception and some behind cupboard doors “master heating “system I finally had a spot of warmth. Carbon, if you sell yourself as a “Design Hotel”, there are some basics you really need to watch out for; this is one of them. Another is lack bath robe etc. in the bathroom. The bathroom “area” itself is less exposed than in the smaller rooms but us equally dark. The shaving mirror is particularly badly lit. Sleep quality was OK; beds comfy cheap foam pillows not....another lack of design?

Onto the floor (and wall) covering. In principle, the dark rubber like substance, as a design feather is a winner. In practice, the rather suspect white stains on my bedroom floor left me wondering what they were and why they were still there.
The hall way on the second floor is equally monumental and also sound carries making for a potentially noisy evening. I would recommend some “design “feature sound proofing a lá concert halls which would greatly improve the acoustics.
I was visiting for work, spending most of my time on the 3rd floor in the “meet “space. Acceptable but with a significant lack of toilets which are located on floor -1 which makes for a lengthy cross legged journey in the lifts……but don’t forget to collect you “get out of jail free card” at reception on the way down to actually gain access to the conveniences. Whilst I am on the subject of the reception, a colleague cut her hand on the design glass panels lining the stairs. One can see that the corners have been filed down, apparently not enough.
The restaurant “Gusto “is not, as another contributed has noted, a Michelin-stared restaurant but has in the past been in the Michelin guide. The restaurant has good and reasonably-priced food and worthwhile eating in. The breakfast experience mid-week was not a success; insufficient staff to clear tables and wine glasses on the table from the previous night’s sitting. Something to watch.

Overall, Carbon is a good design hotel; with rooms facing towards the courtyard a peaceful nights rest is achievable. However, the floor and wall coverings, the lack of adequate light and the lack of attention to detail places this particular “Design Hotel” in the bottom of the premier division. Some attention to the points I have mentioned would bring this hotel up to the desired standard. As the title of my review suggests, I feel that this hotel is more style (and not always good style) over substance.

Room Tip: Pay a little more for a room on the 2nd floor; view is worthwhile

This is an unusual hotel in the centre of Genk, Belgium. Location is good, next to the station and around the corner to the town centre. The hotel is newly built with a designer-focus - baths in the open bedroom - etc. It is interesting, but the problem is, frankly, cleanliness. The shower in our room was dirty and there were multiple stains on the 'designer-floor', quite distasteful. On the plus side the restaurant was excellent with the great concept of having two or three small courses, for the price of a main.

Room Tip: All rooms face away from the main street so are fine

Hotel's rooms design are really perfect. Cleaning is five star. Location is the best for genk. Just at the opposite side of the road there is a train station. Delheize market is behind the hotel. And what i suprised most is the restaurant at the entrance has a michilen star. Wow!

Great modern hotel, great rooms, ac outlets handly, great spa and restaurante. Three things that surprise me though: no tissues in the room. When complain the solution was: "use toilet paper". In a 4* hotel? Mmmm. Second, great spa and bath tub, but no bath robe. Mmmm. Third, great lighting even a movement sensor in the bathroom. But when you exit the hotel all energy is out, so computer, camara, IPad, IPhone etc. did not charge.
Also did not like the floor in the rooms. Neither carpet or any other plain surface. Like an automotive plastic material that felt strange when bare foot.
Otherwise I enjoy this hotel.

I stayed at the Carbon Hotel for one night.

The Carbon Style room was very spacious and the layout was unique compared to other (business) hotels I have stayed at. The dark colors combined with the ambient lightning were very nice. A high-quality flat screen TV and Bose sound dock were nice extras. The airco/heating system was difficult to control and as a result it was really hot in the room in the evening. The thermostat was set to 18 but didn't seem to work properly.

I stayed for business so the nice desk area combined with free and excellent Wi-Fi was definitely a plus.

The only downside of the stay was my breakfast. Buffet choice was limited and the quality was not really up to par. Also during breakfast I got the impression the staff was not too well organized ... and as a result things got kind of hectic and noisy.

The hotel is located just across the railway station and right around the corner of the shopping district. Public parking is available beneath the hotel but be aware it is expensive. I paid 12 EUR for the night.
