Owner description: Koldinghus was built in the middle of the 13th century, and in the centuries that followed it was one of Denmark's most important royal castles. In 1808 there was a fire that left the castle in ruins – a romantic relic. Today the castle has been restored and houses a museum which is a centre for cultural activities and special exhibitions of international standing.

Well worth a visit. We had a great time. We also dressed up in some old fashioned clothes took photos and had a great time. It is a beautiful building and increadibly restaured.

Expected to see an old castle, but found a museum of modern art combined with some history. The modern art was a waste of time, but the historical exhibits were worth the trip. Wouldn't recommend this for any families with small children.

Koldinghus is a 15th century castle that was originally an important part of the border defense of Denmark, but eventually became obsolete and fell into disrepair. It's an interesting restoration, part old, part modern. We saw displays of modern Danish knit fashion, dinnerware, and silver. Probably the most interesting of the displays is a comprehensive collection of Danish silver, both historical and contemporary. The museum isn't very well organized and many of the exhibits are marked only in Danish and German. There is parking inside the castle walls for 75 kroner for 4 hours, but you can save by taking the 5 minute walk from down the hill where parking is 8 kroner per hour. It's worth a visit if you are near the bridge between Funen and Jutland.

There's no other location that summarizes Denmark so well. An old royal palace that was burnt down during Napoleonic times to be rebuilt in the late 20th century with an emphasis on modern design. The reconstruction is modern and interesting while still preserving the character of the old castle. There's a lot to see in here too - I especially liked the initial galleries that described the history of the members of the royal family who lived here. If you're a fan of silver (which I'm not really) there's also a massive silver collection here along with a lot of other interesting historical exhibits.
