Owner description: Koldinghus was built in the middle of the 13th century, and in the centuries that followed it was one of Denmark's most important royal castles. In 1808 there was a fire that left the castle in ruins – a romantic relic. Today the castle has been restored and houses a museum which is a centre for cultural activities and special exhibitions of international standing.

“Worth a Visit”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

We were very interested by the areas of reconstruction in relation to the original structure. In contrast to other restorations which attempt to match exactly, the modern and unusual repairs made the interior especially interesting and filled with contrasts. There were many rooms, angles, levels, and views to explore. I loved the collection of silver. We had a nice break for tea in the cafe before we climbed the tower.

“Too much just to summarize.”
Reviewed 22 August 2013

Gigantic castle next to a pond. It's bigger than you expected. More to see than you expect. Lots of space and lots of walking, but there is everything. From silverware to what portion is restored. From chapel to ballroom. There is even a space, especially for the kids, where clothing from centuries ago may be appropriate.

You can go on the tower and a beautiful view of the area you are waiting for. Free parking and close to the center of Kolding. Access is also not expensive (children free, adults 10 euros). Allow plenty of time for the visit, at least 2 to 3 hours. It is definitely worth it.

“Not what I expected. Not for families with small children.”
Reviewed 25 July 2013

Expected to see an old castle, but found a museum of modern art combined with some history. The modern art was a waste of time, but the historical exhibits were worth the trip. Wouldn't recommend this for any families with small children.

“Interesting Restoration, Silver Collection”
Reviewed 12 July 2013

Koldinghus is a 15th century castle that was originally an important part of the border defense of Denmark, but eventually became obsolete and fell into disrepair. It's an interesting restoration, part old, part modern. We saw displays of modern Danish knit fashion, dinnerware, and silver. Probably the most interesting of the displays is a comprehensive collection of Danish silver, both historical and contemporary. The museum isn't very well organized and many of the exhibits are marked only in Danish and German. There is parking inside the castle walls for 75 kroner for 4 hours, but you can save by taking the 5 minute walk from down the hill where parking is 8 kroner per hour. It's worth a visit if you are near the bridge between Funen and Jutland.
