Pierre & Vacances Residence Les Jardins de la Cote d'Opale

We have just returned from our first holiday in Le Touquet. The accomodation was very clean and the kitchen well equipped with microwave, kettle ,coffee maker, hob, fridge/freezer ,dishwasher (tablets provided) etc. Bathroom was smart and modern, towels were provided. We stayed in a apartment for up to 5 people, the bedroom had 3 comfortable single beds sheets pillow cases, pillows and duvets provided. The tv in the lounge area broadcast BBC1,BBC2,ITV1 and CH4 as well as other channels Staff were polite and helpful. We were traveling with 2 children aged 5 and 7 and they made good use of the indoor heated pool, loungers were available at no charge. We used local shops and the Champion supermarket in Le Touquet (-see their website for a map) for shopping. Ponies were for hire at the nearby equestrian centre 8 euros for 1/2 hour, where you lead your child on the pony along woody tracks, our children really enjoyed this.Cycling is very popular here and bikes can be hired through the hotel or if you have brought your own there is space to store them.

The Opaline apartments are pretty standard Pierre et Vacances accommodation - smallish living quarters containing sofa beds, with a small corner kitchen. They seem to have been decorated recently, however, and the bathrooms are very smart. When booking, which can be done directly through their excellent web site, we never take any notice of the stated maximum occupancy - there were three of us(me and two children) and we booked an apartment for 6/7. One double bed, one 'cabine' (small room) with bunk beds, plus the sofa beds and an extra pull out bed under a sofa.

The location promised breathtaking views, but our balconies overlooked the car park - preferable, I think, to the rooms on the other side of the building which overlooked the swimming pool.
The pool was excellent, but a bit weird. It has a lining which seemed to be very loose and, in fact, was coming away from the pool edge on our second day. It was being quickly fixed though.

As these are apartments, your beds will not be made every day - you are expected to do it yourself, and to clean your kitchen area thoroughly before you leave. The P&V concept is an odd mixture of hotel and apartment, but it is ideal especially for families, who do not want to have to visit restaurants every meal - the kitchen contains everything you need, from salad spinner to tea pot.

What set this P&V apart from others II have visited was the staff. They were friendly, informative and helpful. I look forward to visiting again.

Stayed here last minute, very pleasantly surprised. Had a 2-bedroom apartment with dishwasher ( very handy) fridge, and seperate bath and shower with toilet in each ( also very handy ). All pots and cutlery were new and children loved the large covered pool ( unheated I think). There was also a tv in the apartment that had an excellent picture of all 5 british channels plus a couple of others. The breakfast bar was shut for refurbishment while we were there, although you could order baguettes and croissants the night before. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a large free car park with coded entrance

You probably need a car here as it's a little bit out, no buses, set in the forest with an equestrian centre nearby where you could book for the week or take the children out yourselves for an hour.

Many people had bikes as the terrain is flat and the roads were quiet. Some of the houses nearby are very nice. All in all a very nice place to stay and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it ( and I'm fussy ). Pool was the star, fairly large and conservatory covered. Views from rooms aren't great, but do you really go on holiday to stay in your hotel room and look out of the windows ?

We've just returned from a weekend stay at L'Opaline (party of 5 including a wheelchair user). Excellent facilities, plenty of space, well equipped, clean. Good wheelchair access. Helpful staff (they provided extra towels immediately). L'Opaline is on the outskirts of Le Touquet, so a car is needed (this is probably not an issue for most UK guests, who are likely to have travelled by car). Good value - it worked out at £17 per person per night - I'll use L'Opaline again in preference to hotels in Le Touquet.

As an aside, we crossed using Eurotunnel - their staff were very helpful when they spotted the wheelchair.

With our usual Le Touquet hotel full, we took pot luck and booked Pierre et Vacances pretty well blind. (Even though this property was showing full when we tried to book it direct, we found availibility and a discount to boot, booking through expedia[-].)

The first positive sign was when we pulled into the front carpark: pretty well all the cars were French, with a spattering of enlightened, we now realise, Brits among them. I've got nothing against UK tourists (after all, I am one), but we do tend to squeeze ourselves into the tried and tested hotels, such as the Westminster, Mercure and Novotel Thalassa, and pay a premium for the privilege. Many French, on the other hand, expect high standards but don't believe in paying through the nose for them, and only choose those properties which can satisfy both these criteria.

Naturally, if you just have to have a sea view, or thalassatherapie and a snazzy restaurant on site, then Pierre et Vacances is not for you. However, if these aren't essential pre-requisites, you'd be well advised to give it a try - especially if you have a family, and don't appreciate chucking money away on London-priced hotel bills.

It offers accommodation big enough to call an apartment, and self-catering facilities with which even the fussiest will be impressed, such as spotless cutlery and crockery, plus a well maintained dishwasher, microwave and fridge. Unless I was mistaken, the omnipresent maids were using vinegar to keep the place clean. What's more, as well as an obvious devotion to its own environment, the hotel demonstrates respect for the environment in general, with full recycling facilities available both for staff and guest use.

Depending on your accommodation, you may also enjoy a view of La Canche, arguably more interesting the expansive main beach, especially when the sun illiminates its dunes. If you're familiar with Le Touquet, La Canche may seem out on a limb, but you can quite easily walk into Le Touquet, and it really is a pleasurable stroll.

So, next time your Le Touquet hotel-of-choice turns you away, quick - check to see if Pierre et Vacances can accommodate you. Unless we've got there first, of course.

My family of 5 stayed here in September. The apartment was bright and very pleasent with two small but usable balcancies. The location couldn't have been better on the edge of the forest and river. Only a few minutes walk to the horseriding school, 10 minutes stroll through the residential forest to the town centre, and 5 minutes to other hotel bars and a very good resturant. The pool is fully enclosed, although most websites still show the old 'outdoor pool' photo. Only down side was that the breakfest room and bar hadn't reopened due to the renovations.
Have planned to return this year.

This complex is now called Pierre et Vacances L'Opaline Le Touquet so I guess the Pierre et Vacances chain have taken it over. Anyhow I stayed here last weekend (17 and 18 Sept 2005). I was more than a little apprehensive having read the one and only review. I found the place completely refurbished with new equipment throughout the apartment. New and very comfortable beds. New and very well equipped kitchen with fridge, dishwasher, kettle, coffee-maker, iron etc. The place was immaculate, fresh and clean throughout. Nice large (and empty) indoor swimming pool was a great bonus. Reception staff speak English and are very helpful but reception hours are limited. Le Touquet town centre is a good 15 minute walk and there's not much in the way of shops or restaurants nearby. Most people seemed to have their own car and parking is plentiful and free. All in all for the price paid (GBP60 for two nights) the place was a great deal. Would thoroughly recommend and will return.
