Campanile Paris Sud - Porte d'Italie

Reviewed 21 May 2014 via mobile

We stayed for 2 nights. Overall, the hotel was okay. The receptionist is very helpful explaining us the nearest metro and how to get to several tourist attractions. The hotel is quite small with only 2 lifts. A bit fuzzy for travelling with groups. They have good internet connection.

The room was quite nice and pack. Everything is quite clean. The hallway is a bit dark and almost look like a hospital.

The breakfast was quite okay except for the ham. The ham has some unpleasant smell but other stuff was fine. They served crepes or pancake perhaps (quite thick for a crepe, I guess). It taste good. Other stuff the serve cheese, yogurt, preserved fruit, bread, pound cake, croissant, some selection of fruit juice, coffee and tea.

Low budget accommodations with minimal security. Poor quality beds, bathrooms that need paint and a rude restaurant mgr. who is stressed since he is unable to manage huge tour groups for morning breakfast. My wife was verbally insulted for attempting to 'escape' from the restaurant with a croissant and a yogurt since she did not want to fight the mob in the morning mayhem. The rude mgr of the restaurant who claimed to own Campanille said..'you can only eat what you want here' NO food can be taken out of my restaurant or to your room. In addition, the front desk pushes taxi or shuttle service for airport. When asked about Metro they indicated it would cost 20 euros approx. and taxi 70-90 euros to go to CDG. Truth is Metro is 9.75 euros to CDG and if you take T-3 tram within a 3 minute walk from the hotel..you can connect with RER B from Citie Universitie station straight to CDG airport ..all for 9.75 euros and very easy to do..the front desk sells 'fear' to push their own taxi , shuttle by saying Metro is very very inconvenient...and not even telling you about the tram and RER B connection.
They also REFUSE to exchange euro bills for smaller Euro bills...claim they have NO money...they would not even exchange a 50 euro bill for smaller 20 or 10 euro bills..much less a 100 euro bill.
Overall a shady neighborhood poorly managed hotel flooded with massive Chinese and Cosmos budget tour groups that run amuck in the hotel...with security cards for elevators that do not function...very disappointing...and never again...

Earlier this month, we spent one weekend-night at the Campanile near metro-station Porte d'Italie. We were not disappointed: the room was clean and offered more space than expected for a low-budget hotel. Our room (# 401, which is at the far end of the hallway, so no noise from people waiting for the elevator) even had coffee & tea making facilities and a hairdryer, which - to my experience - is unusual for a low-budget hotel. Decent bed (pillows could have been a bit bigger, though) with reading lights on both sides, space with hangers to hang up some coats etc., desk with reading light and basic chair, bathroom with shower-in-bathtub and ample space to put your toiletries but ventilator didn't work as well as it should. Breakfast room also serves as a restaurant at night (didn't dine there); plenty of things to choose from, proper plates glasses/cups and utensils (not plastic, like at the Ibis Budget hotels where we stayed twice last year), even real yoghurt. Double windows keep out all street noise (which goes on 24/7 as you're near the periferique). Helpfull staff. Neighbourhood isn't the prettiest (visually) in Paris, but all in all, we were pleasantly surprised, and won't mind staying here again in the future. The metro station is nearby: exit the hotel, turn right and cross the road to the left (walk towards the Bricorama-store); keep walking straight ahead for a few minutes and you're there. Buy a carnet: 10 tickets at € 13.70 (use the silver-colored scroll at the machine to choose this option); make sure to hold on to your ticket each time you travel as you may be checked upon exiting.

Initially I found this place far out of the way and not in the safest feeling neighbourhood...but after a couple days stay and figuring out the metro we found it to be alright. Just goes to show that first impressions aren't always right as far as location! The metro, trams, RER and buses were quite close to use, and we even used the RER to get to the airport with no problems at all. Most, if not all hotel rooms in Europe are small, so we didn't find this room to be any different than others in Europe. It was clean, the staff was very helpful and friendly. I stayed one night by myself and then the next night my daughter joined me. The staff made sure that the room I had for both nights was the same and would work well for the 2 of us.

Even at this price point, you can do better in Paris. The room was very small and did not have a closet or a decent place to put a suitcase. The décor was odd with a shade of green we've never seen before covering much of the well worn room. The pillows were also sub standard.

Very nice rooms. However, service was very so-so. It didn't help that we did two separate legs in Paris on an 11-day Europe trip (first two days and last two days) and we stayed at Campanile Porte de Bagnolet on the first leg which was fantastically located near a metro. This Campanile was only about .3 or .4 miles away from the closest metro, but required a walk across many streets including a freeway onramp which wasn't the safest place to cross. It would be nice if the hotel provided shuttles to the metro especially when you have luggage. Also, the metro ride to here from city center goes through some rough neighborhoods, thus increasing the odds of sharing the metro with rough passengers.

Funny note - both Campaniles we stayed at had the strange green walls. Green is my favorite color so I liked them, but I could see how it could turn people off. It is an odd shade of green...
