My wife and two children visited friends in Nocera Umbra in early July, 2011. They put us up at La Rocca and found it to be unlike any lodging experience in our lives! One travels a few miles on back roads without lines into a small valley with hills covered in olive graves, sunflowers and hay. Then through the town of Capodeaqua and up the hill to a mideveil watch tower guarding the important valley. The tower has been painstakingly restored to it's current spledor over the last 7 years by masons from Gubbio... this is authentic 1000 year old, living history... and it is home to only you!
The caretaker/cook/maid is a talented, friendly woman named Anna. When we arrived, she directed us to the 6 floor tower that is accessed by a thick, wood door replete with skelton key. The main floor is a living room, the third floor is a TV room and floors four thru six are bedrooms. You will get your exercise! The furnishing are flemish and authentic... right down to a spectacular 6 foot oil of Saint Francis of Assisi and an authentic pew from the Assisi lower church where he is buried!
Anna and friends helped us prepare dinner for the evening... scampi ravioli, whole sea bass, temura fried zucchini blossoms... are you kidding me? We sipped terrific local wine from bottles without labels and admired tree thinning on a local hillside so that the oak trees on the property could produce more bountiful black truffel.
The pool is nice for a quick dip and the fortress church in the front wall, while small, has period frescos still visible. The restoration is ongoing but nothing was happening during our stay. The kids had a blast running everywhere, climbing everything and yelling down from the arrow shooting turrets to parents 70 feet below!
This property is special. If you want a truly unique accomodation fir a few nights while exploring the surrounding Umbrian coutryside, it would be hard to beat La Rocca!
