gasthof berghof is a well kept secret. on top of semmering passhoehe is that charming guest house with the best home cooked food authentic austrian cuisine, open all year. with nice rooms to spend a night or more. reasonably priced. perfect for walking or hiking easy or more difficult up to hirschenkogel and other aereas. the service is exellent. i have stayed there many time on my travels to and from vienna[ only 1hr drive away] in 50 years i was never disappointed. a well worth drive just for a day or a stay. gerta m

Room Tip: ask for a balcony

We stayed in Hotel Haus Semmering in March 2013 and the overall feeling was fine. Our room was decent with a good view on the opposite mountain. The food was central european, rich breakfast and chicken / meat ball soup + some "knödel" for dinner. We were skiing at Semmering, so for this purpose the hotel served well (eat and sleep).
My observations: As our room was over 100eur/night I think wifi should be available in these rooms (hello...its 2013).
The lobby and restaurant part needs refurbishment too, for hungarians and slovaks its kind of feeling home - "retro socialism", BUT that surprises in Austria :)
Anyway - for skiing fine!

We stayed here only one night but we were really surprised. Hotel is not luxury one but very quiet, well located and very nice people especially on the reception and in the restaurant. Food was excellent, very good portions and tasty. Hotel has nice swimming pool with sauna-all inclusive. Even after skiing you can spend the evening with activities like table tenis, biliard or bowling. Or just relax in the cafe and listen to the music. I definitely recommend this hotel, it is very clean and perfect for people who like active relax

Another last minute surprise for us!

For a summer weekend surrounded by mountains, not far from home, Semmering was certainly a good choice. Accommodation wise, Hotel Haus Semmering did not let us down at all.

From the back garden you can jump onto a couple of trails in different directions, depending on your feeling for the day you can head to neighouring towns along nice routes through woods, fields, along streams etc... or you can begin ascending to the local mountain of Hocheck and Stuhleck. Easy routes, nothing testing, generally beutiful surroundings, would love to come back in winter also.

So the hotel - couldn't have asked for more when it comes to service. Multi-lingual support was top notch, room cleanliness was top notch, actually a load better than what I was expecting for the price we got to be honest! Waiter service was excellant, reception too...

School groups were there during our stay, but the hotel is arranged so, that bigger groups stay on one side of the hotel and guests like us on the other, which meant you hardly noticed the groups (3 large ones!). The only aspect that impacted us, even though very slightly, was the booked out swimming pool for hour periods during the day and evening. But nonetheless, we were out walking and swimming in the morning was fine before the kids were even likely up :)

Pool and gym and table tennis were a nice addition, not normally expected or used, but as they were there we gave them a go and were happy. Word of advise, have cash with you if you indeed to bowl, use the table tennis, play pool etc... for deposits ;)

Drinks on the menu were a bit steeper than they needed to be, in my opinion, but everything else was spot on. Going back? Yes. Recommend to others? Yes.

Look for deals through websites like zlavadna.sk and zlavomat.sk - you can get vouchers that give you discount stays. Even without, looked like reasonable price considering the location.

Only let down, was the cost of transfer from train station to hotel - it's not walking distance, at least not with baggage. 3,50 for a 4 min drive, per person, per way, could have been cheaper. But that's the only grumble.

My family of 4 stayed in this hotel in mid February. Most of the guests were from Slovakia and Hungary, so the menu was designed according to the Central and East European cuisine: rich soups, meat and vegetables with sauce. I liked it as I'm part of the above mentioned group but it's not gourmet cuisine. In fact the whole hotel is not very fancy but it served it's purpose well. We had but the furan appartment with 2 separate rooms, was excellent but the furniture was from the 80's. My kids enjoyed the hotel swimming pool, the pool tables, the tenis table and the bowling alley. They didn't mind too much the fact that it was a reminder of the 60's but I did mind the price the hotel asked for renting it for an hour. The gym is a joke, with 6 old and broken machines but the sauna was ok, a bit overcrowed in the evening

The wireless was working only in the lobby and it was always slow as everybody was trying to use it in the evening.

So I would say it's a 3 star hotel, with a nice swimming pool but with some decoration which definitely needs updating.

Room Tip: Ask for the renovated rooms, these are looking quite good.
