Monfrague is something out of our imagination! A deserted nature park with great scenic routes full of panoramic places to enjoy and take photos. Go to the Castle up top and enjoy some of the most spectacular views and breed for inspiration but... on a sunny day!

We really enjoyed spending time in this great park for two consecutive days. The birding is wonderful especially the Vultures. Would have really enjoyed birding with a local guide. Really enjoyed the hiking trails. Only problem was that the two days fell on a long weekend so there were people everywhere. Found it difficult to find a quiet spot to do some birding. Would have been great to visit during the middle of the week.

A lovely National Park with great bird life and wildlife. The small village must be visited as well as the Castle. Fabulous. do try the 4x4 guided tours - the guides are extremely knowledgeable and make it a great experience.

If you love nature and bird watching you must make a point of visiting the National Park of Monfrague near Caceres, Spain. Granted National Park status in 2007, this park is also a protected area for bird-life.
We saw a flyer at our hotel from a private company that offers guided tours (monfraguevivo.com) among other activities and we decided to go on their 3hr Rutas 4x4 guided tour for 30 euros a person. Our guide, Raul, was very friendly, pleasant and knowledgeable. With his guidance and special binoculars we were able to see a couple of Black vultures in their nests with their babies and also flying above us. We also saw Griffon and Egyptian vultures and Black storks, a few adult deer, a couple of baby deer plus a lovely baby fox.
Raul, our guide, kept us entertained by telling us the history of the park, the situations of the endangered species protected by the park and also the legends related to the Salto del Gitano. Beautiful views of crags and cliffs and the meeting of the river Tagus and Tietar.
All in all it was an eye opening excursion (we had no idea this park even existed), relaxing (there was no one else around which does not happen if you go at Easter time), entertaining in a beautiful natural setting.

I thoroughly recommend the experience.
