“Beautiful, but have your hiking boots on!”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

A real bit of mideaval history, beautifully and sensitively preserved. All within a walled city, narrow cobbled streets, lots of steps and ramparts as well as aquaducts and monasteries and churches galore. Well worth the effort.

“Concentration of Historic Sites”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

Lots of historical buildings in the city. Lots of signs, etc., most in English. We just wandered through the streets with a few maps we got from the tourist office, located in the Plaza Mayor.

Loved all the historic buildings, unfortunately it was raining when we visited but it was still very impressive.

“Like stepping back in time...”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

Walking into the Old Town of Caceres is like stepping back in time...

The modern city is quite nice in itself, the central avenue being leafy (and we needed the shade, even in October!) but go into the Old Town and it's like being in a different city. Once through the gates, you wouldn't suspect that you were only a couple of metres from the concrete city!
Take time to wander through the streets, and have a nosey down every street you can. And make sure you look upwards! The roofs and plaques etc are often worth the visit alone, and you will miss a lot if you only look at eye level. That being said, at eye level, Caceres is a feast for the eyes; almost unchanged since the days of the Conquistadores, there are so many places of interest. The churches are cool even at midday, and there are great views from the towers.
There is also a great museum dedicated to the Easter Parades, which is a salutary reminder of how symbolism can mean totally different things in different places (have a look at the traditional costumes and you'll see what I mean!
The Plaza Mayor has many great restaurants... my advice would be to eat after the sun goes down, as that's when the place really comes to life; oh, and when the menu says "leg of lamb" that's what you'll get... the whole leg!
The place well deserves its UNESCO status, and is well worth a visit before too many people get to hear of it!

“Really cool to see”
Reviewed 15 July 2014

This old town is classic Spain! There's a statue in one of the squares of San Pedro de Alcantara in which it is considered good luck to rub the feet. The small picture perfect streets are fun to walk down.
