“bullring ambiance is not enough”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

The location of this restaurant in a main thoroughfare on the way to the Roman Museum is great. The bullfighters posters, bull heads, etc. were interesting but the overall seedy atmosphere of the rooms is not appealing to enjoy the food. The cod carpaccio was good but the accompanying spicy/garlicky shrimp overwhelmed the subtlety of the fish. We were the only customers and the service was reasonable.

“Never again”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

My husband and I held very fond memories of this restaurant from a visit 6 years ago, so upon our return to Mérida we bypassed every other nice looking restaurant and steered back to Casa Benito. What a disappointment! The salad with partidge that we order for a shared starter was served with very little partidge - and what was there had lots of bones in it. Actual salad was OK - so we would have been better off just ordering a plain mixed salad.

For main course we both ordered the Solomillo de Retinto - medium rare. The steak looked good on the plate, but held absolutely no flavour, inside it was actually ice cold and as we got half way through our steaks we realised that one end of the meat was completely inedible - full of sinews and grizzle. We told the waitress that the meat was inedible and to their credit we did get another small piece of meat served ... but even this was cold!

We later realised that all the local diners had the Menu del Dia priced at 10 Euros - we are convinced we would have been better off with that - and a lot richer than our 78 Euro bill which also included a very good bottle of wine (17 Euros) and a bottle of water.

We will never be back again .....

“Best Ham Ever”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

Our tour guide recommended this restaurant so we tried it. Had a delicious lunch but very slow service on the terrace. Tables were slow to be cleaned and lots of people smoking. Inside the restaurant was interesting with bull fighting memorabilia. We were told to try ham and were not disappointed.

“Fantastic real Spanish tapas”
Reviewed 27 October 2013

We were told about this restaurant by a friend, who owns a factory producing iberico ham, and it didn't disappoint. We had several tapas dishes, including peppers stuffed with morcia (Spanish black pudding), and they were all wonderful.
