Foremost, I would like to point out that the hotel direction, Maria, flatly lied to us about the conditions in Greece at the end of October/early November. She assured us by phone and email there would be many activities available, such as a water park, sailing, wind surfing, and other sports. In fact, everything is completely closed at this time of year. In fact, it was impossible to even find a restaurant open in Lindos after 14:00 in the afternoon during our visit. Other guests from France staying in the next room had a similar experience.
Also, take care about the unfair cancellation policy of this hotel. When we found that there was very little for our family to do in Lindos or almost anywhere on Rhodes, we wanted to cut short our visit, but found we would have to pay the entire cost. While this might be reasonable during the high season, the place was basically empty during our visit and we found that other hotels on the island do not have have such rules.
Regarding the hotel itself, let me list the negative and positive aspects. I will start by the negative, since for us, it was overall an unpleasant experience:
1. Very mediocre food. More about this below.
2. More than 5 dirty and smelly wild cats running about in the dining rooms, meowing.
3. Inadequate hot water. Shower cut short after around 10 minutes.
4. Blocked drains in the showers - in two different rooms.
1. Nicely decorated rooms.
2. Kind and helpful maids.
3. Nice view.
4. Convenient location if you want to visit the Acropolis
More about the foods, since it is unacceptable for a hotel of this price...
Every morning the breakfast consists of frozen supermarket pastries, stale bread, and your choice of Greek yogurt, white toast with process cheese and ham, or an omelet. This seems alright for the first day or two, but soon becomes monotonous if you stay for a week, as we did. Especially since the supermarket pastries come sometimes with a garlic flavor (I can only guess some pan or knife is not cleaned thoroughly in the kitchen). Another day the pasty was still frozen inside. Also, the vegetables in the omelet are always raw, even cold. Then there is an oily chocolate supermarket cake on the side, and some half-rotten, bruised fruits.
The picnic lunch is a total scam. We paid 80 euros to get this for 4 people. It comes very nicely packed up in a big wicker basket, but when you open up the basket expecting a delicious lunch, you find inside, very neatly packed up, nothing except leftovers from breakfast. Same ham and cheese toast, bruised fruits, and oily tasteless chocolate cake.
The dinner is variable. Some dishes, especially meat and fish, are well done in a classic style. My father had a tasty rack of lamb and sea bream. Others need work, like the tomato soup (still cold from the can...), pasta with figs and hot peppers (flavor poorly calibrated, just a bad idea), and shrimp in ouzo sauce (shrimps were off, fishy odor was overpowering).
The house wine is undrinkable and overpriced, sweet and with an off-taste of detergent. You can pick up something better for 4 euros at any little shop in town.
There are much better restaurants in town, such as Amfithea near the square.
As for Greece itself, our family won't be back. The entire island was just a filthy tourist trap.
Greeks don't seem to understand the concept of using a trash can; everywhere you go there is litter and rubbish in profusion, especially the beaches. I even saw a police car chucking garbage out the window! It really spoils the rural beauty.
You can spend a half day visiting the archeological museum in Rhodos, and an hour or so walking around the Lindos Acropolis. Other than that, there isn't much to see besides tourist shops and the usual go-karts, bars, and other tourist crap.
Overall, if you want to go see the Lindos Acropolis, and stay for a night, the Melanos hotel might be acceptable if money is no object. If you want to go someplace tranquil, beautiful and with family activities available, for a weeklong holiday, choose another country and another hotel.
