Melenos Lindos Hotel
Ranked #3 of 30 Hotels in Lindos

Reviewed 7 November 2011

Foremost, I would like to point out that the hotel direction, Maria, flatly lied to us about the conditions in Greece at the end of October/early November. She assured us by phone and email there would be many activities available, such as a water park, sailing, wind surfing, and other sports. In fact, everything is completely closed at this time of year. In fact, it was impossible to even find a restaurant open in Lindos after 14:00 in the afternoon during our visit. Other guests from France staying in the next room had a similar experience.

Also, take care about the unfair cancellation policy of this hotel. When we found that there was very little for our family to do in Lindos or almost anywhere on Rhodes, we wanted to cut short our visit, but found we would have to pay the entire cost. While this might be reasonable during the high season, the place was basically empty during our visit and we found that other hotels on the island do not have have such rules.

Regarding the hotel itself, let me list the negative and positive aspects. I will start by the negative, since for us, it was overall an unpleasant experience:
1. Very mediocre food. More about this below.
2. More than 5 dirty and smelly wild cats running about in the dining rooms, meowing.
3. Inadequate hot water. Shower cut short after around 10 minutes.
4. Blocked drains in the showers - in two different rooms.

Positive aspects:
1. Nicely decorated rooms.
2. Kind and helpful maids.
3. Nice view.
4. Convenient location if you want to visit the Acropolis

More about the foods, since it is unacceptable for a hotel of this price...

Every morning the breakfast consists of frozen supermarket pastries, stale bread, and your choice of Greek yogurt, white toast with process cheese and ham, or an omelet. This seems alright for the first day or two, but soon becomes monotonous if you stay for a week, as we did. Especially since the supermarket pastries come sometimes with a garlic flavor (I can only guess some pan or knife is not cleaned thoroughly in the kitchen). Another day the pasty was still frozen inside. Also, the vegetables in the omelet are always raw, even cold. Then there is an oily chocolate supermarket cake on the side, and some half-rotten, bruised fruits.

The picnic lunch is a total scam. We paid 80 euros to get this for 4 people. It comes very nicely packed up in a big wicker basket, but when you open up the basket expecting a delicious lunch, you find inside, very neatly packed up, nothing except leftovers from breakfast. Same ham and cheese toast, bruised fruits, and oily tasteless chocolate cake.

The dinner is variable. Some dishes, especially meat and fish, are well done in a classic style. My father had a tasty rack of lamb and sea bream. Others need work, like the tomato soup (still cold from the can...), pasta with figs and hot peppers (flavor poorly calibrated, just a bad idea), and shrimp in ouzo sauce (shrimps were off, fishy odor was overpowering).

The house wine is undrinkable and overpriced, sweet and with an off-taste of detergent. You can pick up something better for 4 euros at any little shop in town.

There are much better restaurants in town, such as Amfithea near the square.

As for Greece itself, our family won't be back. The entire island was just a filthy tourist trap.

Greeks don't seem to understand the concept of using a trash can; everywhere you go there is litter and rubbish in profusion, especially the beaches. I even saw a police car chucking garbage out the window! It really spoils the rural beauty.

You can spend a half day visiting the archeological museum in Rhodos, and an hour or so walking around the Lindos Acropolis. Other than that, there isn't much to see besides tourist shops and the usual go-karts, bars, and other tourist crap.

Overall, if you want to go see the Lindos Acropolis, and stay for a night, the Melanos hotel might be acceptable if money is no object. If you want to go someplace tranquil, beautiful and with family activities available, for a weeklong holiday, choose another country and another hotel.

As a family of 6 it is often difficult for us to find the ideal accomadations but we found them at Melenos. The walk up the winding streets was like unwrapping a gift and being thrilled and excited about what you find inside. The hospitality was fantastic, we arrived late at night and were surprised to be offered dinner. We were treated to one of the best meals we had in our week in Greece. Breakfast the next morning was yet another wonderful surprise, from the incredible view and atmosphere to the yummy food. Only two nights at Melenos and our children made us promise that we would return and that will be an easy promise to keep.

Travelling as a family through Greece, we stayed for a few days at the Melenos Lindos. Perfectly situated near the Acropolis, beautiful views, lovely rooms, delicious meals, the staff adapted themselves to all our needs without our even having to think how they could do it: from keeping the kitchen open so we could have dinner despite our 4 hour travel delay and very late arrival; creating a superbly luxurious private balcony dinner for us on another evening due to a wedding party, giving us all the support that we needed in finding excellent restaurants in Rhodes...essentially taking care of us from before we arrived till after we departed. Even ensuring that a forgotten cell phone in a taxi to the Rhodes harbour was waiting for us upon our return at the restaurant we had reserved a few days later! If only all hotels could provide service and quality like this one.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a terrace, courtyard or balcony directly overlooking the bay.

My partner and I were staying at the Melenos Lindos last week. What can I say... it was truly magical. Michaelis, the hotel owner and his staff anticipate your every need enabling a perfectly relaxing experience. The hotel itself is absolutely adorable and is located within the most breathtaking views of Lindos. The restaurant located on the rooftop of the hotel has an amazing view of the Acropolis and provide succulent dishes for it's guest. It is truly the most beautiful hotel we have ever stayed at. It is a dream of a hotel ...the perfect getaway!

Room Tip: We were staying in room number 12.

All the comments about the beauty of this hotel, the tremendous helpfulness and friendliness of the staff, the excellence of the food, the wonderful views, and the rest, is true. I put it to the test in a quite unexpected way, by slipping on a village street and fracturing my ankle on day 1. The staff responded heroically: Michalis arranged an ambulance to a private clinic with which the hotel has an arrangement, and he and the hotel driver accompanied me and my husband and waited while I was x-rayed and strapped up, then drove us back again. Meanwhile, the owner Mr Melenos had a bed made up for me on one of the huge and comfortable sofas, and lent me a plastic stool to sit on while I showered. The waiters, Ilias, Aimilios and Alexis, carried me down and up steps back to our suite, and thereafter served us all meals for a fortnight on our large and beautful private terrace, chatted with us and corrected my elementary Greek. The maids enquired after my health every day and left flowers on my bed at night. Maria lent us a laptop so that I could request special wheelchair assistance for the flight home. Everyone was unfailingly helpful and could not do enough for us, so that what could have been a total disaster turned out to be as pleasant an experience as could be managed. I am just sorry that I could not ramble round the corners of the hotel or visit the shop.
Our suite was number 3, which I wholeheartedly recommend. Beautiful decor, with traditional Greek furniture and decoration, huge comfortable sofas with massive cushions to recline against, views of the sea and harbour. The terrace is perfect. Lindos itself is not the unspoiled village that it was 35 years ago, and the endless floods of tourists from the coach-trips are daunting to say the least, but this hotel is a civilised haven above the crowds, an oasis of greenery and a comfortable retreat. Thanks to everyone!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a private terrace.

This is a beautiful hotel with the best position in Lindos. The stairways and terraces are filled with wonderful pots of flowers and plants. Our bedroom and bathroom were superb and we had a lovely outside courtyard area. Great attention to detail is given to every aspect of the hotel. All the staff are unfailingly polite and friendly and special mention must be made of the maids who decorated our bed so beautifully each night. We were given an upgrade on arrival to a master suite which was greatly appreciated (all hotels should operate this policy as it makes the guest feel so special).
The only point I would make is that this hotel may not be suitable for the very elderly or infirm as there as quite a few steps to negotiate and it is situated at the top of the village.

Thoroughly deserves all its excellent reviews.

Melenos Lindos is the most beautiful hotel we've ever stayed at anywhere in the world. The architecture and interior design is EXQUISITE. The choice of plants and flowers throughout the premices of the hotel is perfect. Located between the Acropolis and the beach, and only a few minutes walk to both, it has the best possible location and a breathtaking view. The staff is very friendly and helpful and will see to all your needs. The atmosphere is peaceful and harmonious. Breakfast was great! We are returning to this dream of a hotel in a few months.
