Camere Dentro Il Castello
Reviewed 20 July 2014

I spent a week at Monteriggioni Castello in May this year, with my sister and our mother. We had been looking for a very special place, as the whole trip was to be our mother’s birthday gift (she is 70). It turned out everything we wished for. An authentic, old little house that had been thoughtfully and stylishly renovated, retaining the charm of age but providing every comfort.

The apartment is airy and spacious. The kitchen is small but two to three persons can still comfortably prepare a meal together -- largely thanks to the fact that there is not one but two entrances between the kitchen and the large living room with the dining table. All the basic kitchen equipment is there. If anything, we missed paper towels and plastic garbage bags after a few days of stay.

The bathroom is just as clean and comfortable as everything else.

One of the bedrooms has a door leading to a tiny patio where one can sit and sip coffee. Our mother, who smokes, appreciated this easy access to a private, cosy outdoor space. Mornings and evenings we sat there listening to the doves, to the church bells ringing hours, and watching the tiny town wake up and go to sleep. The Castello gives you that smug feeling that you *live* at Monteriggioni, as opposed to all the other tourists :-)

One has access to the owners’ quiet garden/orchard adjacent to the medieval wall. There one can also park one’s car.

The owner family are every bit as hospitable, accomodating, charming and helpful as other reviewers have said. They are always available, yet making one feel left in peace. Their gestures of genuine, personal hospitality added an extra nice touch.

Final tip: if you travel in a rented car, make sure not to choose the biggest broadest one – this saves you the struggle while driving in to town through the narrow medieval gate.

Look no further - you are onto a winner!

Our excitement levels were rising as we drove up the hill, past the car park for "tourists", through the gate in the medieval fortress wall and through the marble-paved piazza to a second piazza where we found our cottage. Elisabetta was there to meet us. She showed us into their private walled garden where we could park our car (you could easily fit 2 or 3 cars), take the sun on the loungers, enjoy the shade of the beautiful olive trees, use the BBQ and marvel at the fortress walls and towers which form one edge of the garden. Elisabetta speaks perfect English and her dad speaks excellent French.

She then showed us into the cottage and showed us how everything worked including well-equipped kitchen, lovely bathroom with shower and chromotherapy lighting (like you get in some spas), and separate laundry room. The cottage has 2 bedrooms - one double and one twin (they could be pushed together) as well as a double sofa-bed. There's an extendable table to dine at (although we ate out or in the garden a lot!) and a little external courtyard with a table we used for breakfast every day.

There's a DVD library in the cottage if you want a night in but there are also plenty of options for going out. Within the castle walls there are 4 independent restaurants in the piazza and one in the Hotel Monteriggioni (3 nights in one double room there cost more than a week in this cottage when we checked). You could also, as we did, grab a bottle of wine from one of the enotecas in town and walk out into the vineyards on the side of the hill to take in a beautiful tuscan sunset.

Siena is 20 minutes drive away and local taxis are reasonable.

I paid by PayPal which was a massive help so there were no transaction fees for me.

No pool (although the hotel next door has one which we didn't investigate) and no gym, - but walks, bike rides and runs in the area are great fun and you get to see some glorious views!

Family of 4, boy 11, girl 14 from Bristol, England, we travelled by car spending a week in Grindelwald, Switzerland then a week in Monteriggioni, Italy (we loved Switzerland but thought Monteriggioni was the best it is a great destination). We all agreed this was the best holiday we have ever had, lovely people, a great atmosphere, totally relaxing, a truly romantic setting, so many things to see and do.

The owners are wonderful people, they provided invaluable local knowledge, suggesting day trips, places to eat (and the best deals) always helpful and welcomed you as though we were old friends. Several times we had treats during our stay (at no cost) like home made croissants for breakfast and tomato salad (lovely).

Monteriggioni Castello is a charming holiday apartment set within the walls of the fortified medieval town built between 1213 and 1219. History is everywhere you look, around each and every corner, the apartment blends into this environment seamlessly. The unique experience of staying within the castle walls is unforgettable, we felt privileged to live here (if only for a short time), something I know my family will never forget. In addition there is a free guided tour (in English, German and Italian) of the castle, walls and museum (normally 8 euros) if staying in the castle.

The apartment is very comprehensively equipped through out, and of good quality (everything we needed), I would love some of the apartments antique furniture in my house. The owner’s attention to detail is obvious from the moment you step inside, a lot of work has been done to make it special.

Although a small town I never tired of walking the streets at the start and end of the day. There are many gift shops, a tobacconist (meat, cheese, bread), restaurants and a 4 star hotel (£180 per night, but I know where I would rather stay).

The location of Monteriggioni is ideal for touring Tuscany (you do need a car) only a few ilometres from Siena, San Gimignano, Colle Val d Elsa and Castellina in Chianti. Within easy reach of Florence (but suggest taking the bus or train because of parking), a little further a field are Pisa, Lucca and many beaches about 1 hour 30 minutes scenic drive. The area is also ideal for walking, mountain and road biking, however a word of warning Italian maps leave a lot to the imagination and it is easy to get lost.

I just wanted to finish by saying I am well traveled, all over Europe, Scandinavia, Africa, Mediterranean, Caribbean, Central and North Americas many of these living for several months at a time. Monteriggioni is in my all time top 3 destinations, because it ticks so many boxes, and the accommodation is so good. Would I come back again? just try and stop me.

We stayed in Monteriggioni Castello during the first two weeks in July, and had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. The house is very attractive, comfortable and very well equipped; a real home from home. The village is a very interesting place to stay, with the town walls, museum and church, as well as some good restaurants and bars, in addition to being an excellent base for touring this area of Tuscany - especially Sienna and San Gimignano, both of which are well worth visiting. We stayed when the annual Medieval Festival was taking place, when the village really does come to life on the weekend evenings, with music, street theatre and food and wine stalls. Our hostess, Elisabetta, was very welcoming and could not have been more helpful. Overall, highly recommended

We really did enjoy our stay here. The ambience is nice and typical for the village and the surrounding. It is quiet, except for the churchclock keeping you up in time - not too early and not after noon - not disturbing at all.
We were driving lots around in tuscany: Siena, Chianti, San Gimigniano, Volterra, Pisa, Livorno etc etc.
We came for the wine, the food and the olive oil.
All of this we got more than the doctor prescribes :)
One week after coming home TNT brought us a load of Brunello wines we did buy and send when visiting Montalcino.
Elisabetta and the whole family took very well care of us during the stay. We try to avoid hotels, and the Charming Villa is a very good choise in such a case.

After becoming lost in Tuscany we arrived in Monteriggioni and it was suggested that we try this Castello. It was a lovely two bedroom house, with parking inside the walls. Everything you could think of was provided including cook books in several languages, magazines DVDs etc, it was so inviting we stayed a second night and would recommend it to friends

What a wonderful place to stay and the family that own it make you feel so welcome in every way.
We had six day in this beautiful little villa in the grounds of Monteriggioni Castle.
It is so very private with its own little courtyard that is gated off to others. The rooms are very generous with two bedrooms, bathroom with shower (no bath) but that was great as we never use a bath, small but lovely kitchen and beautiful large lounge to relax in after days out exploring the beautiful countryside of Tuscany.
Its so very central to everything but of course a car is a must plus a good GPS as some of the country roads can be poorly signed.
It is so close to everything Pisa,Sienna,San Gimigniano,Grieve in Chianti and Florence to which it is much easier to travel to by train which you can catch in Sienna as parking in Florence can be very hit and miss and also very expensive.
Elisabetta and her brother are so helpful they told us of many places to visit plus many good places where we could eat and very cheaply. We got a puncture while we were there and Elisabetta even organised a place where we could get it fixed by ringing and booking it for us which was a great help and it was done immediately. They also provided us with many maps

Room Tip: The hotel next door can be a little noisy especially if there is a function on. But we found the s...
