The thing to remember with the Castell is that it is a 3 star, value hotel (at least it was value for us). Most people in the hotel seemed to agree that they got a bargain and made the most of it.

We were staying half-board although we would have paid the same to stay B&B. So we treated dinner as a bonus and agreed that if the food was terrible we would just head into town for dinner. The food was interesting but we both managed to leave filled up every evening. If you don't like what you get served there is a nice salad buffet available to fill up from.

The views are incredible and every room has a balcony with a lake view. Our room was small and a little dated but it was very clean and we grew to like it a lot.

The staff were all friendly and flexible. We were allowed to have an early breakfast on 2 occassions and a late dinner on one since we were out on excursions.

Yes, the hotel is up a lot of steps (I counted 107 to the hotel then a further 36 to our room) but if you do your research first then you can decide if it is suitable. I see this as a positive as it is the height that gives such spectacular views and the walk down to town is quite charming.

The pool is beautiful too (but freeeeezing).

We would stay again. Any of the negative things you might read about food seem to be shared with all the hotels, even the 4 star ones (according to others on our flight).

Room Tip: Higher up for the view or lower down for less steps to town.

Just got back and i wish I'd booked elsewhere. Firstly not suitable for anyone with any kind of physical disability as we were told. Cleanliness is so poor, photo's included, that i had an asthma attack the first and third night. Safety cord in shower was black with mold, when we brought it up, the owner cut it off completely so should i slip in the shower I'd be stuck there. Radiators caked in an inch of dust, even after brought up and they "Cleaned" it was still there. No pull end on the ceiling fan so i couldn't even reach it to turn it on. Even though food pre-ordered the day before desert was wrong twice with no apology. I'll warn you now that the seafood risotto is hotter than hell and it has tonnes of chilli flakes in it but menu did not state that. The back staircase to get to town if you stand at the top and someones at the bottom they can see right up your skirt/dress and certainly not suitable for children. Balcony never swept or mopped. Ant run down side of bed. Walls so thin you can hear next door wee and have arguments. Only two power outlets in the room, one in bathroom and one with the TV plugged in. The power is unreliable, lights flicker always and went off altogether regularly. Fair enough the power goes off during thunder storms but the rest of the time there's no excuse. No hot water before 6am. Charged for drinks we did not have, refunded after confronted. This hotel is not geared up to English just the Germans and Italians. No entertainment at all so either sit in bar or bog off to bed as outside steps much to dangerous to walk up in dark or semi- light.

Buses will not stop here, any buses or coaches. The road level is LETHAL, think Brans Hatch, no matter what anyone says DO NOT try to walk along it.

Only good things to say about this hotel is the beds are comfortable and the lady at reception/bar is really nice, i'd just like to say that. View is great.

Room Tip: Get one in Malchesine instead. Or just about any other hotel.

I went on holiday to Limone and stayed here for a week. The Breakfast was to die for. The lunch and tea was ok but not brilliant. The drinks were lovely too. The rooms were cool but were a bit ugly. The view of the lake was fantastic and the swimming pool was good. The swimming pool gave me a awful itch everywhere so beware. Other than that it was good.

a simple hotel with fab views from the restaurant and pool area. all rooms are lake facing so all have good views though some are definitely better than others - i think floor -1 i.e. the floor below reception has the best views if you get a choice - smaller balconies but unobstructed views. didnt really want half board but actually it was decent enough and plenty of it. lovely pool - plenty big enough for a proper swim.

Room Tip: top floor has v deep/shared balcony which restricts views and makes it less private. floor -1 looked...

Breath-taking view over the town and lake makes you forget the small issues with this hotel.
Parking is very limited and you may need to leave your keys.
We arrived at a little before 20.00 after an awful drive and decided to eat at the hotel as we were tired. They "kept open" the kitchen for us, I was somewhat surprised this was necessary at 20.00, which we were thankful for but the food was a "school dinner" and not a good one at that.
The room was clean, the bathroom was poorly lit and the shower cubicle was not made for claustrophobics!
The pool was nice but not large however we found the sun loungers uncomfortable. Breakfast was not overly inspiring but the bread was fresh and lovely.
Unlike some reviewers who enjoyed "skipping up and down" the steps to the town (as someone who suffers from a bad knee) I did not.
The view makes everything better!

Just had a fantastic week in the Hotel Castell in Limone sul Garda. From 31 August 2013
Views are stunning. The hotel is built flat against the cliff so every balcony has a panorama view across the lake to the mountains. Set 100 steps up from the old harbour you have an uninterrupted view over the roofs of the village. Most of Limone is built on a slope, so Castell is still among the more accessible hotels in Limone, apart from the few on the waterfront.
Staff very friendly and helpful, managed to get by with simple English, and some German. Most of the guests were Germans and Austrians who had driven down.
Hotel very clean, rooms simple but adequate, pool was small but the hotel is small too so the pool area was never over crowded. We were half board, evening meal was good and would be typical of the area, sufficient choice from set menus with three options of starter, main and dessert as well as side salad. A good three star hotel, good value for money.
We had some amusement from the translations on the menu, in Italian, German and English. One dish described as ‘octopus with potatoes’, we imagined a pile of mash with tentacles sticking out the top, but it was pan fried pieces of octopus with sauteed potatoes and very nice. Another night a dish was similarly described as ‘veal with potatoes’ we thought we had it sussed but it turned out to be a veal stew, again very good.
Only one small criticism is that at ten past eleven every night, the lights on all the balconies went out automatically, and all the Germans went obediently to bed. The lights were on some sort of master switch or timer. We would have our evening dinner, wandered down into the town where the shops are open to 10pm, then strolled along the front, people watching, had a nightcap or icecream, returned to our room. Sat out on our balcony with a good book to chill and enjoy the cool of the evening, and that’s when the lights went out. We weren’t ready for bed, the room was too small to bring the balcony chairs inside and it didn’t have the same atmosphere anyway as sitting out on your balcony.
We are ex-campers so bring most things just in case, fortunately we had a powerful LED torch, but only one, so my wife sat out on the balcony with it balanced on her shoulder and read. I have no objections to a curfew where one does not play music or make noise after a certain time but turning out the outside lights is unusual. It was a little too early. I know people who bring kettles on holiday or who bring irons, very sad, but my advice now is to bring a table lamp and extension lead and your evenings will end perfectly, at a time and in a manner of your own choosing.
Limone village centre and waterfront has kept much of its character even though it is busy with tourists. A great place to chill, there are some water sports but Riva and Torbole are the real centres for enthusiasts. Simple down to earth charms, perhaps light on nightlife and amusements for younger people unless your hotel provides these. There are some moderately challenging walks into the hills behind the village accessed by the walkway up the side of the river, then diverging in different directions. Some mad people even mountainbike these. Do take a map, the signposts and route markings are not as good as promised. Public beach area can be busy, we found a lakeside beach bar open to the public, north of the centre at hotel Astor, plenty of dappled tree cover, free recliners, always space, anyone can use if you buy your drink or snacks from there, good place for competent swimmers. Maybe should have kept that to ourselves in case we return, met quite a few people who regularly return to the area and can see why.

We just got back from a gorgeous week in Limone at the Hotel Castell. The first thing to say is that the view over the lake is absolutely breath-taking and definitely one of the very best in Limone and even out of all the positions around the lake.

Limone enjoys stunning views of mountainous scenery and glistening water and is filled with beautiful narrow streets and lakeside promenades. The town itself is quite quiet but very tasteful and easily connected to beautiful Malcesine and more lively Riva. We even took a trip into the Dolomites. It is slightly more difficult to get to the lower part of the lake without paying for excursions, but once we had taken a tour of the whole lake we decided that Limone is one of the most picturesque spots on the lake with the most dramatic scenery. I would only advise against Limone if you are thinking of going to the theme parks (Gardaland etc.) on the other side of the lake as it's too far to travel to be worthwhile.

The hotel itself is both slightly understated (compared to others in Limone) and beautiful. It is not as big as other Limone hotels meaning it is much more friendly and the staff provide a very personal service. The restaurant has the same wonderful views as the rooms and we were lucky enough to sit by the window every night. We were pleasantly very impressed with the food, which is generally typically italian with a fairly good variety (3 choices per course and different every night), excellent choice of buffet salads and reasonably priced local wine etc. Breakfast also provided a great variety of fresh breads, croissants and watermelon.

The pool area is not as small as some have described, and is usually beautifully peaceful surrounded by cliff faces and gardens which show off the typical 'limonaia' (lemon grove) it once was. The view from the pool is well worth it. There is also a table tennis which provides light entertainment in between swims.

Our room was the smallest double in the hotel, but was perfect for us and had a lovely lake side balcony and the cliff-face was even exposed in the wall of the corridor ( a lovely touch).

The notorious '100 steps' are really no more than a 2 minute skip into the centre of town with 5 minutes of satisfying legwork on the way back which just made you feel like you deserved the 'gelato' you'd just eaten in the town. They shouldn't cause any problems for anyone who is physically able.

I would happily recommend the Castell (and Limone) to anyone thinking of staying around the Lake. Lake Garda itself is huge and offers so many different opportunities, we would love to return here soon. We booked through Thompsons (or Crystal) who provided a really easy journey to/from the hotel and reps who were happy to help with literally anything you needed. Both excursions we did with them were well worth the money.

Room Tip: The standard rooms don't come with A/C but there is a big fan and the lake breeze helps keep the...
