We have just returned from a week at Villa Dirce and I don't normally write reviews but I was so impressed I felt compelled to do so. The hotel was small and therefore very homely, same staff around on a daily basis and a small group of mixed nationality guests. The room was spotlessly clean upon arrival and continued to be so throughout our stay. It was equipped with air conditioning, a stocked fridge and hair dryer plus the free use of a safety deposit box. The view from the private balcony over looking the lake was to die for and apart from sleep and shower we spent little time in the room. In addition to the private balcony there were three sun terraces, one with a swimming pool (not very private) and one with a whirlpool (quite secluded). The walk into Limone took about 20 minutes and the views were again breathtaking for the duration of the walk. The walk was quite hilly so not recommended for the disabled or unfit. There were steps from the whirlpool area which led you to the lane to walk into Limone thus avoiding the need to go near the very busy road that runs around the lake when leaving by the hotel entrance. A shuttle bus is also provided by the hotel which takes you in and out of town at the cost of 1 euro return.
Having read the reviews on this site before we went and me being a fussy eater I was concerned, however in my opinion the food was first class. Always a good selection, freshly cooked and often too much to eat for one meal. I don't know about anyone else but I certainly don't have 4 courses for dinner at home. Good selection of breads, fruit, cereals, yoghurt etc for breakfast and afternoon tea/coffee and cake. If you are someone that goes abroad and expects burger & chips, egg & bacon etc then you will be disapointed but if you are visiting Italy to experience a little bit of their culture and traditions then I can't see how anyone could fault the food at Villa Dirce. Limone itself is very pretty and a busy ferry terminal provides access to the rest of the lake. Promotion cards are available in the hotel which provides discounts on ferry tickets and other attractions. Probably only a couple of euro at a time but over the week it adds up to a fair saving. The weather was wonderful except for a few thunderstorms and torrential downpours. The rain didn't last for long but when it came it was very heavy so umbrellas are a must. The cable car at Malcesine is also a must, spectacular views (promotions card provides discount on this). We did a lake tour with a local excursion (bookable on the day on the lakeside) which was faster than the normal ferry as only stopped twice but enabled us a few hours both in Sirmione and Garda which are some distance away from Limone. There were facilities for spectacular walks, speed boat hire, wind surfing and mountain bike riding or just sitting in the sun watching the world go by. Museums and art exhibitions were also available for those seeking culture as was Verona with the opera and classical music performances. I intended to write a short review but I seem to have rambled on. All in all a wonderful holiday, comfortable, clean, friendly hotel and I can't wait to book a return trip.
