The Villa Dirce is a very nice hotel. Because of it's position on the hillside it is a long and narrow structure. The view across the lake is magnificent and a good view of Limone itself is afforded from all the rooms and from the dining room, terrace and pool terrace which is on the roof.

The air conditioned rooms are plainly furnished but there is plenty of room to move around, wardrobe space is good and the bathroom, like all parts of the hotel is spotless. Reception is on floor 0, the pool and a few rooms are on floor 1 (which is the roof) and the rest of the rooms are below reception on floors 2 and 3 which is back down again and seems really odd at first. There is a lift which takes the guessing out of where the floors are!

Breakfast is served mostly continental style but at odd times bacon or sausage and scrambled egg appears. As the hotel is half board, guests make their dinner selection at breakfast time. Dinner comes as four courses: a self-service salad bar, entrees, main course and dessert. Guests collect their free jug of house wine (it is on tap) from the bar along with a jug of water. After dinner the bar serves drinks on the terrace. This is the only part of our stay at the hotel that we felt could be improved. The bar service covers the dining room and the terrace and as there is usually only one member of staff preparing drinks this makes service very slow, though it improves as dinner comes to an end.

The hotel is a good twenty minutes walk from the town. You can leave the hotel two ways on foot. One is to go down the garden stairs and onto a cobbled lane. Although this is the safer option, it is quite daunting walking back up them after the uphill walk from the town. The other route is from the front door. There is about a 100yd walk to the corner of the Via Nova which leads down to Limone. About two thirds of this short walk to the Via Nova is along the unpaved main road, the remaining third has a footpath. This is quite a scary walk, especially when coming back to the hotel as you have your back to the traffic but it is by far the shortest route and certainly the one that the staff use.

The staff try very hard to speak English but they are much more comfortable with Italian and German. That said there are plenty of British visitors, mostly with Thomas Cook and Thomson Lakes and Mountains which both use the hotel.

In summary we had a very pleasant stay at the hotel and would happily visit again.

My husband and I travelled through Thomsons on June 19th for 11 nights. It was quite late when we arrived but a welcome supper of salad and cold meats and fruit was waiting for us in our room. We were on the 2nd floor. we had a small balcony and unrivalled views over the lake. The room was fairly basic, but spotlessly clean and we found the beds to be very comfortable. Breakfast was self service and taken on the terrace overlooking the lake. There was plenty to choose from and the bread and croissants were always nice and fresh. Dinner was served in the restaurant and you had to choose your main course at breakfast. Again there was a reasonable selection, and free wine and water was included. we found all the staff to be friendly and helpful and the manageress went out of her way to make our stay as nice as possible. The swimming pool and surrounding terrace has wonderful views. The only downside to the hotel is the distance from the centre of Limone. There is a path but it involves negotiating a lot of steps up to the hotel or walking along a section of road with no footpath. This said we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Limone is lovely and it is so relaxing getting on the boats and sailing over to other towns on the lake. A trip up Monte baldo in the cable car from Malcesine is recommended but go early to avoid the queues!

For the price we paid, we had a very good holiday in a resort we had visited previously.
What attracted us to the Villa Dirce, out of the available hotels in Limone , was the fact that all rooms come with lake views and aircon as standard, plus it offered a very competitive rate for half board, achieved by booking about a month before departure .

We had a room on floor 2 (one down from reception) which had a balcony & fantastic views over the lake where we could have sat for hours and watched the world. The room was very clean, although not totally soundproof . The Jacuzzi & pool were great for relaxing in the late afternoon after a day out.

We had stayed in at the nearby Limonaia Hotel some seven years previously so were aware of the undulating twenty minute walk into the town centre. The walk from Villa Dirce along the main road to the path leading to town takes about one minute - if you don’t fancy the 100+ steps up from the lakeside path to the hotel. At least the walk to town ends close to the ferry embarkation point, whereas if we had taken the hotel’s courtesy minibus into town we would have been dropped off at least 10 minutes away from the ferry at the other end of the lake front.

The food was acceptable .I’ve had worse meals in hotels and I’ve had better, but for the price it was certainly OK. There was plenty of choice at the breakfast buffet although those demanding a “full English” every morning may be slightly disappointed with the lack of black pudding, mushrooms, beans & hash browns. We had no issue with choosing the options for the four course evening meal at breakfast time, as it helped us decide what to eat during the day. Most evenings there was a soup/pasta one other starter option, with a choice of one of three mains (one of which was usually fish & one other a meat escalope - coming from the home of the “Parmo” , this was not an issue for me).

The free wine & water at dinner saved about 10/11 euros a night if we had to have bought the same amount.

We made good use of the Tourist Promotions cards, available to all via reception, and managed quite a bit of discounts on the ferries, cable car to Monte Baldo & entrance to museums/gardens etc.

Whilst there is no smoking within the hotel dining area, the outside terrace, where breakfast & post dinner drinks are taken, is an area where people do ” light up”, so those with sensitive noses may have to sit away from trenchant smokers.

We found all the hotel staff friendly and tolerated - & even encouraged - our attempts at speaking Italian . About two thirds of the hotel guests were from Germany & had driven down and one third were English which made the World Cup football match on TV an interesting experience!

We were welcomed by Livi, the manageress/receptionist/head waiter - she does everything with a smile and friendly demeanour, we have rarely seen anyone who works so hard. Staff were also friendly and efficient (presumably because she trains them). The location of the hotel is stunning, all rooms overlooking the lake. We enjoyed walking into Limone after dinner through the cobbled alleyways to Bar Al Porto and soaking up the atmosphere. The menu may be less Italian than we anticipated (although the pasta was always delicious), but predominantly guests are German, so lots of meat and veg! They will always accommodate different tastes if you really don't like what's on offer. Breakfast on the terrace was always good, service excellent and the pool area is small but perfectly formed. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would be happy to return.

We stayed at the" Villa Dirce" for a week from 29th May to 5 June 2010. Very nice peaceful hotel 2km or a 20 minute walk up and down a fairly hilly walk into Limone. There's a very interesting staircase to the back road/pathway down into town. Not recommended for wheelchair access and could be a struggle with prams/buggies.Once you get used to it the walk to and from Limone is very nice hugging the lake with 3 or four hotels along the way to stop for a cold one if you need one.
The hotel itself is right on the lake road on a fairly dodgy bend at the exit of one of the many tunnels around the lake. You cannot get to town walking along this road, way to narrow. But you can walk/run a hundred yards along it to get access to the lake path/road.A bit easier than the the two flights of stairs and a cobbled path.
The room we had was small but very comfortable, with a terrace and a low wall , blocking the view when sitting down. (321) We asked if we could move up to a balcony room(222) ,we were moved no problem. The balcony is small with no privacy screen but the view more than made up for that.Perfect to watch the lake come to life early with the first ferries setting off around the lake.
You have air-con(lovely and quiet) which was switched on from the 1st June,we didnt really need it but temps can reach 40 degrees apparently.
The bathroom was very clean and the shower excellent, never a problem with hot water.
The restaurant was a large with a perfect panoramic view across the lake(get a window table).Breakfast , not very inspiring DIY boiled eggs,DIY toast, and the usual cereals and continental meat, cheese, fruits and yoghurts.
Evening meals could be more inspiring , you make your choice at breakfast. The pasta starter is bigger than the main course. We made do with one to keep the pounds off, very nice though.
Make sure you ask for your free half carafe of red/white/rose wine.Only free in the restaurant,if you want the same on the terrace you pay.
There only seems to be 3 waiters and they work like trojans, very friendly and efficient. The
head waitress also mans reception.
The pool area is recently refurbished and relocated to the roof away from the road and is very peaceful and was never crowded, good sunbeds and table and chairs(brollies)if you just want to sit and chill with a coffee and look at the view. There's also a jacuzzi pool at the top of the back stairs to flop into once you've made the walk back from town.
To sum up don't expect the ritz but for location and views you won't be disappointed. The hotel was kept spotless throughout. If you choose a hotel in town you may encounter noise at 4am when the deliveries are made. Lovely little narrow streets. Lots of gift shops, bars and places to eat by the water lovely. Limone is one of the nicest places on the lake.

We have just returned from a lovely week at Villa Dirce.
The hotel is located 20 minutes walk north of Limone. Limone is reached by either climbing up and down 114 steps to the undulating path into town or taking your life in your hands and chancing the dangerous road with no footpath for 200 yards befor joining the footpath. The hotel is on 4 floors and built into the side of the cliff. The top floor is the swimming pool, sun terrace and 4 rooms, next floor down is the road entrance to the hotel and reception, restaurant, bar and outdoor sitting area. Next floor down are 24 bedrooms all with a balcony but the best views of the lake and the bottom floor another 24 bedrooms with large terrace however because of a small wall you cannot see the lake unless you stand up. Also on this level is a small pool and access to the steps into town.
The receptionist was great she was Restaurant Manager, Head Bar tender, concergie and just generally helpful. Our rooms on the floor with balconies were recently refurbished and clean. Our only complaint about the rooms was that the beds were hard but that is personal choice.
Food in the restaurant was best described as 'okay' and the free wine made up for any shortcomings.
There was very little to do in the hotel at night and the trend was to have dinner a drink whislt enjoying the views and an early night. Limone was closing down at 10.30/11.00 at night when we were there
I would recommend this hotel
