Il Monastero is an unusual, oddly-styled but fun stay - if you can put up with some of its more quirky aspects.

Minus points:

• It's off the beaten track - a car is recommended although there is a good bus service, but the timetable is restrictive
• Rooms are minimalist (one small window and no "views") but fully air con. Our room only had one electric power point, the mattresses were smaller than the bedsteads, and the TV channel choice was poor
• Meals, other than half-board, are pretty standard; basic Italian but well presented. Breakfast is probably the worst aspect - machine coffee, processed fruit juice, something resembling a pre-packed baby rusk (with two mini tubs of jam), and a croissant. Anything else and it will cost you.
• Lunch - one waitress to serve up to 10 tables, so be ready for a long wait.
• The bar is always unmanned - ring for service

Plus points

• Italian (Sardinian) vibe
• Family atmosphere - guests include young lovers, families and elderly couples
• Relaxing - no hustle
• Walking distance to beach and bus stops
• Pleasant, friendly and helpful staff
• Large room and bathroom (superior rate)
• Good-size swimming pool and sun beds
• Beautifully clear roads (outside Cagliari) for motoring

This is never going to be more than a 3-star hotel - but that's its charm.

Arrived at this fairly remote hotel quite late in the evening and was greeted with a polite request to have something to eat with an assertive 'no'! Thankfully this was reversed by the ever smiley and resourceful manageress, Donatella. The next few days were calm, relaxed and comfortable. Breakfast was basic but the lunches and dinners were of a very high standard. The room was kept clean and cool - although it could do with an upgrade fairly soon. A car is a must if exploring is your plan for this part of the coast.

The hotel is part of an old gesuit monastery. It's a simple decent place with a very efficient and helpfull reception. The place is quite far from the action, the beautiful beaches of Villasimius are 30 mins drive away. You need to be on the car all the time if you need anything. Breakfast is inconsistent and very minimal. The price is low for the area but it reflects what the hotel offers.

I was there early May with a friend. The hotel is rustic and truly peaceful. We had dinner in the hotel every night and the food was amazing. The nearest beach was a good 15 mins walk away, and it was beautiful and unspoiled. We even did a good hour and a half one morning horse riding by the beach and through the woods, it was awesome! This place is great for pure unwind and relaxation, there is no doubt about it. I would definitely return!

Just simply a lovely place to stay if you are looking for a holiday where you can relax. The gorgeous pool has hammocks nearby and there are plenty of lounger chairs by the pool. If you want to get out and about it's best to hire a car. The nearest beach is about 20 minutes walk and we found a different beach everyday. Superb.
