Overall this hotel was a very good hotel. We stayed for 7 days in June and really enjoyed staying at the hotel, although if you are looking for a hotel with nightlife, this is possibly not the best hotel to stay at. Here's why we liked the hotel...
Rooms: Our room was strangely laid out but of a decent size. The bathroom was also a decent size with a toilet, bidet, sink and bath with overhead shower (and retracting washing line - perfect for drying swimwear!) The highlight of this room however, was the view from the balcony. We had perfect views of the hotel pool, the marina and the sea. We were situated on the 6th floor and our room was on the corner so we only had people on one side of us. Ask for Room 602 - you won't be disappointed!
The hotel itself was spotlessly clean and for the most part staff were very friendly and efficient. Special mention must go to a young gentleman who fronted the reception desk who went out of his way to help us find an alternative room for two of our group, one of whom is less mobile than the rest of us and needed a room near the lift. I did not take his name unfortunately but he should be highly commended for his customer service skills. Needless to say that he got a big tip at the end of our stay!
We ate at the hotel restuarant twice during our stay and the food was delicious on both occasions although quite expensive for a buffet meal. The selection of foods was huge, with a choice of several hot dishes, cold meats, breads and rolls, cheeses, rice, pasta, several varieties of potato/chips a salad cart and then an ice cream selection and a choice of desserts ranging from chocolate mousse and creme brulee to fruit salad. There was also hot soup (different varieties most nights) on offer.
The breakfast buffet was also full of variety. There was the usual tea, coffee, speciality teas and water plus several different fruit juices, several types of egg, cheeses, cold meats, cereals, breads and pastries, fried breakfasts, a huge selection of fruits and yoghurts. Plus probably some other items that I've forgotten!
There are two pools at the hotel, one indoors and one outside. We ventured down to the indoor pool on one occasion but the temperature of the area was so hot we couldn't bear it for more than a few minutes. The gym is a little run-down and lacking in any real equipment and was also a little too hot for my liking. The outdoor pool however is in stark contrast to the indoor pool and is too cold, even despite the outside temperature being on average 28 degrees all day! There are plenty of sunloungers and there are signs telling you that saving sunloungers with towels etc is forbidden, but many hotel guests did not abide by this rule, so if you can't beat 'em, join 'em is what I say! (And that is what we did!) There is a pool bar but drinks are expensive. Do not buy bottled water from there if you can help it. We bought water from there and it cost 3.50 euros for a 1.5 litre bottle. Along the marina, water costs 1.25 euros and in the local supermarket it costs around .50 cents. The pool bar serves cocktails, mocktails, alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, tea and coffee, as well as ice creams. There are chairs and tables situated around the bar if you want to have lunch/snacks (the pool bar also serves sandwiches, salads and other light lunches). There is also a jacuzzi outside which is a nice touch..and some leather sofas dotted around outside.
The hotel bar is very slow in serving customers most of the time. We ordered hot chocolates at the bar after returning from an evening out and had to wait 20 minutes, before we eventually cancelled our order and then ordered them from room service, which took less than 10 minutes to arrive! Incidentally room service food is very good and servings are generous.
There is a beach approximately 10 minutes walk away and the marina is literally across the road from the hotel. All in all I would say that the Vila Gale Marina is the perfect hotel for all your needs during a stay in Vilamoura. I'd definitely stay again.
The only negative I have to mention is that the a/c in our room was very noisy. We left it on overnight and it woke us up several times with noisy clicking. Luckily the temperature in the room was bearable without the a/c most nights.
