Reviewed 21 September 2011

Just returned from Villamoura and stayed at the Tivoli Marina for the last 4 days. We arrived at 2.00pm to be informed our room was not ready and that we would be told when ready ( this did not happen and had to ask again). Were given a room on the 4th floor overlooking the pool and sea which I must say was very nice, but when we looked around the room it appeared tired and in need of renovation (were informed at checkout that this room had in fact been renovated so would hate to see the rooms still in need of renovation). In the bathroom parts kept falling off the shower which was not a stand alone shower but over the bath. The complementary robes were a joke unless you are a size 4+.
We decided to have a well earned glass of wine in the room but found that the glasses were dirty and when I phoned housekeeping and got through to reception nothing was done about it. Luckily the lady with the minibar trolley was on our floor and did exchange the dirty glasses. ( not 5* service ).
The room did not have an iron, ironing board, sewing kit, kettle, teapot, trouser press, complementary water or fruit which are things I would expect of a hotel of this kind.( and when I mentioned the water etc on departure I was informed they are now part of a group of hotels and need to join in order to get water etc. It would have been nice if we had been told of this on arrival and not on departure.
Breakfast was nice but nothing extra special and nothing better than we had had in our previous less expensive hotel in another resort.
We decided to visit the hotels private beach one day and so were flabergasted when we were asked for 30 euros for the beds and parasol. ( what do they not understand about private) and when I questioned this they said the free beds were by the pool ( no good if you wish to sunbathe on the beach and very misleading as every brochure in the hotel room makes reference to a private beach).
Drinks were very expensive, and although the pool bar/ restaurant had many covered seats many were ripped. Also although the pool was large there were areas of black on the tiles as if they needed a good clean.
The lady who came to turn down the beds did so at a stupid time like 5.00pm and the attention to detail was none existant.
The mini bar fill up service came one morning before we were dressed for breakfast and we asked for them to wait 5 mins whilst we got ready but no service was given to our mini bar that day ie dirty glasses left etc.
The ice machine on the 4th floor was broken and was not mended whilst we were there.
On check out the receptionist was dismayed when he asked me about our stay and I said OK.He knew about the bathrobe problem but nothing had been done about it, the free water was now only given if you filled in a brochure and became a member of these hotels but you can only do this if you are told of the procedure.
First impressions of this hotel are fantastic and the location is second to none but I would not stay there again given the cost involved you could easily hire a private villa with fantastic amenities for the same price or less.
This hotel in our opinion is living on its location and needs to pay more attention to detail within the hotel itself.

Room Tip: Ask for a deluxe room

This is our third visit to this hotel.
We arrived on the 25th August 2011 for a 10 night break. We were given a refurbished room 906 on the top floor facing the marina. We were half board.
Since our last visit in 2008 there have been many improvements...the Side Bar in particular is in a lovely location looking over the Marina.
A great hotel in a superb location with plenty going on....not for a quiet stay and don't forget your expanding wallet you will need it. Go half or full board at least then your food is paid for. A meal for 4 in the Marina with wine would cost a good 100 euros plus.

What I liked:

~ Fantastic views
~ Great beach...WOW !!
~ Plenty of sunloungers. No need to rush out early with towels.
~ Lovely food and great service from the chefs and waiters who delighted in recommending local wine and fish....a really nice bunch of people.
~ Good Service
~ Free newspapers (when you signed up to their hotel marketing scheme )
~ The Marina ..pina colada..5 euros
~ The Casino ...best place to drink... a very generous pina colada 3.50 euros and you dont have to gamble it you dont want to. Free entry and you do not need your passport to get in as suggested by the travel rep.

What I didn't like:

~ The cost of drinks.....9.20 euros for a pina colada...one small beer and a diet coke around the pool 7 euros. Two coffees 7 euros. Poolside sandwich 8.5 euros.(exchange rate 1.07 euros to £ at time)
~ Spa Massage treatment......on arrival we were given a free 30 minute massage voucher.I decided to pay an extra 50 euros so I could join my wife. The outcome was not good.... after the massage my wife complained of lower back pain. On returning home my wife attended the Doctor who stated she had a twisted pelvis and badly bruised L4 vertebra. This will take time and money to rectify.
Noise ...... The '19th Hole' pub empties at about 3 am. This pub is on the Marina close to the hotel. From about 12 night until 4am the noise increases with the worst occurring when the pub closes and the 'BRITS' decide to hold very loud conversations with each other.

Conclusion :

A fantastic location for a great holiday...not cheap or quiet but if you go knowing this you will not be shocked !!!

Room Tip: High floor best views..slightly less noise and refurbished room. Sea view noise is apparently from t...

We have stayed at this hotel a number of times which spans one complete side of the marina.
The hotel has a wide mix of nationalities and people ( families , groups , couples and singles)
It is extremely close to all the restaurants around the marina and we particularly like the Mayflower even though it is quite expensive, The Ship, Chinese and Thai are also good and on our last visit a champagne bar had just opened at the far side of the marina and this was quite an entertaining venue.
At the hotel we paricularly liked the Italian restaurant but we thought Pepper's was somewhat expensive and at night the bar is superb inside or outside is excellent to get a last drink. No problems ever getting a sunbed or fresh bathing towels as the grounds areso big.

I had booked 3 standard rooms and was worried when I read the reviews here so I emailed the hotel quite a few times expressing my concerns. When we arrived at the hotel we were given free upgrades to deluxe rooms facing the sea, stunning view, thank you Silvana. Rooms kept clean and towels changed twice a day but one morning the maid came in about 8.00am even although we had a "do not disturb" sign on the door, not happy at that! There was 3 computers in reception with free internet and a free safe in the room and also free ice machines on every floor next to the lifts but whatever you do, don't ask for a cup of ice at the pool bar or you'll get charged 2.50 euros! Also water is 3.50 euros but if you go outside the front of the hotel to the right, up the small incline and turn left, there is a shop there where water is 1 euro and the owner is very nice. The staff (especially the doormen) were nice except for the female who worked in the pool bar, very bad attitude so much so that I was tempted to report her to the manager but decided to give her the benefit of the doubt, however, I have noticed that there is another review on here re the bar staff, hopefully if the hotel reads the reviews they'll take note and put her somewhere where she is not in contact with people who are paying a lot of money to stay at the hotel. Apart from her, the pool area is lovely and there were always empty beds no matter what time of day and the pool was a fair size and never too busy. At 4.30pm there is water aerobics (music a bit loud) and free watermelon smoothies are handed out if you're lying on your sunbed, nice touch. We went in for breakfast about 10.00am as the restaurant got quieter at that time and the food was lovely, loads of choice. The marina in Vilamoura is beautiful - full of restaurants and bars with cocktails averaging at 6.50 euros and beer at 3.50 euros a pint. All in all, we had a lovely break and although there is definately room for improvement, we look forward to returning to the Tivoli Marina.

Room Tip: Although I didn't see the standard rooms, I th from what everyone says on here I think it would...

The hotel was great. We had an amazing experience. We stayed in room#707 – the one that hasn’t been refurbished, but it was still nice and clean. Spacious room, nice bathroom, beautiful marina view. Comparing 5-star hotel in Dubai (previous reviews) to 5-star hotel in Portugal is ridiculous. You would never pay the same money for 5-star hotel in Portugal and 5-star hotel in Dubai.
I guess, some people are never happy.
Tivoli is a really good standard hotel.
Reception – yes, a bit slow, but you are on holidays, so no need to rush. Receptionists are very nice and friendly.
Room quality – we were on 7th floor, non-refurbished, but spacious and clean. You can tell which floors have been refurbished, just looking on the floor carpet when the lift is stopping on different floors: 1st and 2nd grey carpets, looks like they are the oldest floors, 7th red carpet which looks better than 1st and 2nd and it is higher floor so must be better as usually higher floors are better quality. All other floors cream carpets – refurbished floors. It is your choice if you want to pay extra for deluxe room. We were happy with standard room on 7th floor.
Room service – twice a day, if you don’t want to be disturbed by the cleaning maid just put ‘do not disturb’ sing. So simple...
Internet – sign up to GHA loyalty programme and you will have free internet in your room during the whole stay.
Pool – nice, big area, you can get sun beds any time you want, bars a bit pricey – glass of champagne €14!
Restaurants in the hotel –can’t comment as only had a few drinks and a snack in Side Bar – amazing view, really nice service.
Location – this is premium location, the best in Vilamoura, close to the beach and the marina, perfect for day and night activities.
Marina – a few nice restaurants, you can find cheaper ones behind the marina but this is the whole point of having a nice dinner on the terrace overlooking the marina. We tried: Akvant – delicious food, nice service; Mayflower – amazing food, good service, sitting on the terrace during sunset was wonderful (highly recommended!); Mariscada – traditional restaurant, but very average food, old fashion décor, there is a lady who is getting the customers from outside, she is too aggressive, very unpleasant attitude, didn’t enjoy it; Capriccio – a very friendly place, good quality service, delicious pizza and tasty ice coffee – highly recommended!

Overall, amazing, relaxing holidays. Will be back to Vilamoura and to Tivoli.

We have just returned from 4 nights at the tivoli. Standing in the most perfect location in villamoura Marina, this is perfect for the beach and dining out around the Marina.
check in went very smoothly. We had booked a deluxe room and had e mailed the hotel prior to our stay to request a High floor, double, non smoking refurbished room. All our requests were confirmed on check in. The room was nice, overlooking the Marina. Bed was very comfortable and nice large bathroom. On the first night the maid walked in at 7.30pm to turn the bed down, we learned from this and put the do not disturb sign up the next night but on the last night she came back at 5.30pm to do this!! She was politely told that it was far to early!!! we treated ourselves to dinner in Peppers steakhouse one night. The setting was lovely, with the sun going down, but the steak was really average and you could get a much better steak in any restaurant around the Marina! It was also very expensive and certainly not worth the money. We found the pool, a very strange atmosphere, it was silent yet busy and made us feel very uncomfortable and needed a bit more music. Because of this we decided to pay the very expensive 40 euros for a bed and umbrella at purobeach. However the chilled out music and comfort of the bed, made this a very relaxing experience, but not one we could afford every day.
Overall this hotel is very nice and I would definatley come back, but be prepared it is very expensive for any extras that you might have!!
