“Perfect Hotel, excellent location, wonderful staff”
Reviewed 14 April 2010

My wife and I can not praise this hotel and our stay enough. We are both fussy travellers, and don't mind paying the extra 'buck' as long as you get what you pay for. The Lake Resort hotel delivered on all fronts, compared to the other hotels in Vilamoura this one just oozes style. You have easy access to one of the best beaches in Vilamoura, and for some reason the sand on this side of the Marina was a lot nicer than the main beach. You can walk for miles to the next village along the beach or cliff, both being lovely walks. We stayed during the week of Easter, and the hotel was suprisingly quiet, which was great as it gave the staff some time to spend chatting to us. Every member of staff was friendly and happy to share their time. It was my wifes birthday and they delivered a lovely choclate cake to our room, and on Easter Sunday gave a somewhat unusual Easter bun/cake (you have to be there..!?). We just had B&B which was varied and filling, and had a couple of meals on site. The Fusion was excellent, and not as pricey as you would expect, definitely cheaper than at similar restaurants in the UK. The only downside (which i guess is applicable to any hotel in the area) is that if the weather is bad there is little else to do, fortunately for us it was a scorcher while we were there. We were advised by the staff that the August break gets VERY busy, and best avoided. If you want a classy, relaxing, welcoming holiday in the right location then this is it.

We stayed at the Lake Resort mid-Oct and it was our first overseas trip with our 7 month old daughter. For context, my wide and I are early/mid 30's and both professionals working in London.

Our requirements for a hotel in Portugal included:
* somewhere that was not overtly a child-friendly hotel as with a 7 month old we didn't need for her to be amused
* self catering options
* walking distance to a town where we could get supplies
* close to beach but also with decent pools
* 5 star resort

The Lake Spa was one of the few places we found that met this criteria ... so what did we think ...

Pro's
* Weather excellent (high's of 26/27 ... blue skies)
* Virtually empty hotel (seriously ... I think there were 12 people! ... the taxi driver said that this resort was never more than 50% full)
* Great 4 poster beds by the pools (b/c the resort was empty we could always get one) ... moreover there is a sign saying that you can't reserve seats ... obviously i'm not sure how well they enforced that given there were so few people
* One of the pools was heated
* Excellent service ... it was my wife's birthday and I discovered that they made (as in ... i saw them at 3pm and they baked a yummy chocolate gateux free of charge and delivered it at 8pm as requested)#
* Good gym
* provided a dvd free of charge
* Marina is right next to the hotel ... although there is no noise as it's on the far side

Con's
* 10 euro charge for room service
* apartment didn't include some cleaning up essentials (e.g. cloth, washing up brush, washing liquid)
* expectation that we'd find our own dish washing machine tablets after using up the two they provided ... however in saying that after commenting on this they did bring some more to our room

Can't comment on:
* Spa
* Restaurants (although we did have a couple of drinks at Zanzibar and VERY expensive ... e.g. 8 euro for a chocolate milkshake ... but good drinks)

Tips
* Marina restaurants ... caveat, we only got to have lunch in the marina as baby was feeding in the evening (& we didn't want to pay 30 euro per hour) ... nontheless, the marina is generally full of overpriced tacky restaurants ... however the tai tai chinese place was nice and Cais's was excellent for lunch and breakfast ... in particular their omlettes were fab - you can't miss it as it's close to a really tacky restaurant called Leonels

Had a lovely holiday in Lake resort. Hotel was lovely, but the only downsides were there were no mattresses on sunbeds and then they wanted to only allow one towel each, ridiculous for a five star hotel! There was no waiter service around pool area for drinks, missed opportunity there, if they had someone walking around they would probably sell more as most people can't be bothered to move! The drinks were outrageously expensive 2 euro for a small still water! Didn't like the bathroom being almost inside bedroom and the shower area was too open and everywhere got wet. Would have been a nice touch to provide a small still water by bed at night complimentary! Tea and coffee making in rooms would have been good and appreciated by most English people.

Just came back from a week at The Lake Resort. Hotel was absolutely beautiful and spotless and all but one of the staff were very friendly. We only encountered one group of people who reserved their sun beds every day and they were actually English! A pint of lager from the Poole Bar was 8 Euros which we felt was just ridiculous - you can get a pint of lager in a top London hotel for less than £5. We did eat in the hotel restaurant one night. Unfortunately the gentleman on reception at the restaurant had an air of "superiority" and although the restaurant was empty when we arrived, he insisted on asking whether we had booked and it took 20 minutes and two asks for the wine menue to arrive. I ordered a pork fillet dish which was very over cooked.

We visited between 20th and 27th of June and would highly recommend this hotel. As our first trip abroad with our eight month old, although we have travelled a lot before it was slightly nervewracking!!
We didnt have to worry at this hotel - they love children, make a real effort, provide anything you need and we really couldn't ask for more!
We had an oceanview double room, the travel cot was proivided in the room and a kettle, plus additional towels we requested on arrival - with no fuss! Balcony was great with two chairs and table for when our little one had finally flaked out!

The staff were cooing at our little boy from day one - how refreshing not to feel uncomfortable. The breakfasts are fantastic, aswell as having a covered over area so we could sit in the shade (under a proper roof!) the highchairs were in plentiful supply - and clean. The birdies kept him more than amused at breakfast and lunch! And we could take yoghurts away to put in our mini bar fridge no problem.

The hotel room was beautiful, the bed big enough for four, and the bathroom etc., spotless. The sand pool was brilliant for youngsters (and they get a towel at the pool) with a shallow gradiant to the water. The pool bar for lunch and drinks is brilliant, food is excellent, probably not the cheapest but its convenient and teastes great!

The spa is fantastic we both had a complimentary treatment with our stay - use it its fab! I was lucky enough to go several times, no hard sell for products and some truly fantastic treatment rooms decor wise!

We didnt eat an evening meal at the hotel as some restaurants were closed and with the marina less than a ten minute walk away we had ample choice each night.

The marina - great restaurants, family atmosphere, all places we visited (Akravit was our favourite) welcomes children and had highchairs available.

Unfortunately our little one was poorly for a couple of days when we were there, reception had a doctor to us within the hour - shown to the room, they offered to fetch what we needed, ordered us a taxi to get to the pharmacy and supermarket (for supplies - quicker than walking in the midday sun!) got us a fan (as no air con allowed for the day as chesty cough!) could not ask for more.

The beach was also a short walk out of the gate in the grounds of the hotel, ample sunbeds, great sand, we did walk to it to have a peek but with everything we needed on tap by the pool we stayed put!

I know we will return soon, and cannot wait! Yes its pricey but it has nice guests, great staff and everything you need so all in all was a fantastic holiday and worth it.
