Bansbari Lodge
Reviewed 16 November 2013

I stayed for just one night at Bansbari Lodge on a quick trip arranged through Jungle Travel in Guwahati. At first sight the lodge is a bit disheartening - concrete, grey and a bit uncared for in the front. One the plus side it is right at the gate of the park and after the dismaying front, the side beyond the dining room is much nicer with a lawn and trees.

My room had a basic concrete floor but it was large and reasonably clean with clean sheest and towels. There was a hot water geyser that worked reasonably well and a foam mattress that was a bit of a luxury compared with the usual very hard Indian style. The room was cleanly painted with no signs of monsoon damage. The furniture was solid wood and bamboo and of good quality. I did find one very large cockroach but as those things fly and there were no others, I think it was an outlier.

The lodge offers full board with buffet meals. There were very few guests so early in the season and it was uncomfortable eating on my own with several staff standing watching. The food was reasonable quality.

My cell phone didn't work there but that may have been the substandard Vodaphone network rather than a general issue.

I had prepaid for a jeep safari and the lodge arranged an elephant trek. They were both good but be aware that there are extra charges that get added to the bill. Not big but it would be better if they were notified up front. There was 300R for park entry for the jeep, 150R for a man with a gun who accompanied us and 50R camera charge each day. I saw a rhino and baby from the back of an elephant which was priceless so any complaint is minor.

Overall, Bansbari Lodge is good value for money and I was pleased with their arrangements. Don't go expecting a luxury lodge but something that is fit for purpose with facilities reflecting the reasonable cost.

It is an ideal place for wildlife enthusiasts who want to have the real taste of forests. The lodge shares its boundary with the National Park. What else to you want? You walk out of the gate and you're at the entrance of NP.

About the lodge: It is very basic as the rest of the travelers have mentioned but pretty comfortable. The bathroom is very small but clean. The towels seem old and give you a few thoughts before you use it. Hence carry a towel. There is no source of entertainment (not even TV) which i completely loved so i could spend more time around. Yes electricity is a big problem but its quite pleasant in this season so you can do without it.

Food: Is basic but eatable. The coffee is good.

What to do in leisure time?
1. Exactly is front of the lodge is the Fatemabad tea estate where you can take a stroll (be careful about the snakes though). You can visit the tea factory as well (on request ofcourse) and see the making of tea.
2. The lodge has sort of made an orchard in its premises. You can spot and click wonderful birds and butterflies there. (I spotted more birds in the lodge than in the actual NP).

Elephant safaris should be booked in advance and are better than jeep safaris. We spotted 2 rhinos and many birds. Try rafting in Manas river, which is managed by the forest officials and assam tourism. You can drive through the bansbari range upto Mathanguri where there is small lodge as well for night stay. Has only 6 rooms and is booked most times due to foreign tourists demand. You can raft from Mathanguri to Bansbari which is takes 1 hour & 30 minutes for 20 km journey. And trust me its a must must do when in Manas!

If you find yourself at the end of a tour of northeast India with a few rupees to spare this is a great place to treat yourself. The spartan rooms are made up for by the delicious all inclusive buffet that greets you at each mealtime (beer not included) You're as close to the park as can be without sharing space with the tigers. The staff are friendly and helpful, the tours and elephant rides well worth the early morning wake up call. Just check first if the price is per room...or per person.

I stayed at Bansbari Lodge with a group of 15 people for three nights and Paid Rs.6000 per night for room and meal. Basic lunch with rice, dal and one veg, one non veg item and no bread. Dinner same but with bread. Linen not changed in the rooms on daily basis (only on request), towels are very dirty and probably three/four years old and still being used, rooms infested with mosquitoes and flies ( being on the boundary of a national park), NO ELECTRICITY AT NIGHT as the hotel has irregular power supply and they shut the power backup at night which was very inconvenient. The big advantage of this hotel is that it is adjacent to the park boundary and right next to the entry gate. It is not a place to stay with family and children. Wildlife lovers will have to compromise the standard amenities that a hotel should have to stay here. No Ac or cooling facility.

Bansbari Lodge, Manas National Park, is a very dilapidated hotel. The service and food were basic, the staff was friendly, and there was electricity sometimes. A visit to Manas National Park is normally an early morning visit on elephant back (6.:00-7:00 hours), a walk to the nearby village or tea estate (9:00-11:00 hours) and a drive in the afternoon (14:30 -18:00 hours). The rest of the time you are in the hotel! In such a situation I would like to have good accommodations and Bansbari Lodges does not offer that! It is not maintained and was not the type of hotel I like to stay in! However, there are not many options around Manas National Park. A shame, for the park is beautiful with forest and grassland along Manas River and up to the foothills of Himalayas and the boarder of Bhutan. I stayed for two full days and had an elephant ride in the morning and a drive in the afternoon. The rides and the drives were scenic and interesting, but I did not see many animals, some elephants, one group of gour (buffaloes), deer, wild hogs and some birds, including peacocks and hornbills. I did not see any rhinos or tigers! My trip to Manas was arranged through Jungle Travels India, Guwahati, Assam.

Stayed here November2012 and had a wonderful experience. Rooms are basic but spotless and comfortable with good showers. The food is excellent, some of the best we tasted in India. Staff very friendly and helpful. Ideal situation as so close to the park and no distance to go for an early morning elephant safari. The jeep safaris were ideal, through fabulous scenery and with very knowledgable guides which made all the difference. Some beautiful sunsets over the river.

Room Tip: Try to get one with a balcony facing the tea garden.

Stayed for 3 days after my event. Nice, clean and cosy rooms with balcony. good staff and very good food. had a nice stay with a wonder experience of the Manas Sancturay. The lodge is just next to the sanctuary gate where the elephant safari starts. in front of the lodge you have vast field of tea plantation. Do visit the tea factory nearby and good aromatic experience. if you are a nature lover then you will enjoy the sanctuary and the area around it. Do not forget to take dip in the manas river (wonderful experience)

Room Tip: Try making booking as early as possible as it really goes full during the season.
