We were two couples exploring Catalonia.
We found this quirky hotel thanks to Trip Advisor.
And all the reviews seem to get it about right, especially the highly personal and friendly reception by the owners. The very simple, but surprisingly comfortable rooms are fine.
We ate there two nights, with drinks on the "terrace", but forced inside by the cold to eat. We had no trouble finding really good things to eat both nights. Not high gastronomy, but very pleasing nonetheless.
It is a bit of a hike to the sea, so we usually took the car, and also used Colera as the jumping off point for little expeditions.
All round good fun, and seriously well-priced (food and hotel)

Room Tip: The loos are open to the bedrooms, so if you are sensitive, choose the "Blue" room which h...

We booked the hostal because we were driving down towards Girona from Perpignan and wanted somewhere slightly off the beaten track, and cheap to stay. We just had one night arriving at about 8.00pm. The small town is very quiet, on a Tuesday night in May only two local bars were open so we returned to the hostal and chose to eat in their restaurant. What a treat, the Catalonian food served was quite exceptional and was complimented perfectly with a bottle of local red. The service was first rate with our host making a lot of effort to ensure that we understood the menu.
The couple who run the hostal are clearly dedicated to providing a comfortable and stylish environment. The rooms are smart, and yes there are 'open bathrooms', which were a first for us, (but that's what travelling's about).
The included breakfast was a real surprise, yes technically it is 'continental' (see previous review), but this was a feast of local meats, fresh juice and the best compote's that we have ever tasted.
We loved this place.

Looking at a map you will find Colera situated about 2km from Portbou. That's fine if you bring your own helicopter. Unless you're an experienced hiker you will not be able to reach this hotel on foot from Portbou. There is however an infrequent train service. Those with a car will have no problem finding Totsompops as it's located at the edge of town just off the main road. My wife and I prebooked a room and so were surprised to find the hotel closed upon arrival in the afternoon. Using the intercom we were able to rouse the owner who came dowstairs, handed us the keys to our room and disappeared. We didn't see him or anyone else in the hotel until the following day. The room itself was modern and spotlessly clean. People should be advised that there is no door between the bedroom and toilet; only a screen. I'm all for open plan but this seems to be taking it a bit far. The breakfast and dining area were both above average.

Great to a find a smaller, more personal place to stay on the Costa Brava in a town that hasn't surrendered to mass tourism yet. The rooms were simple but stylish, and great value compared with other places we contemplated, the only complaint being a very bright exit light. The owners were lovely, making a real effort to make us feel welcome despite some language barriers. Easy to see that they really care about giving guests a good experience. The food was also great, top quality local ingredients and wine.

Colera itself is great choice for a relaxing time, we stayed here for a few days before a week in Barcelona, which was a great contrast. We really enjoyed the coastal walk south, some spots along the way with hardly any people despite being the middle of July.

Colera village was very quiet, water crystal clear and great snorkeling among fish directly from the main village beach. Beach is small round stones and pretty steep. Maybe not so good for small kids.
Not too many dining options in the village.

And the hostal: modern and stylish. lovely breakfast with freshly pressed orange juice, excellent coffee, toasts, marmelade, charcuterie/cheese. The hosts are really nice people. Dinner is also very good, try the arroz!

rooms have modern quiet airconditioning.

Room Tip: only four rooms

This is a small town, beach easy accessible. The town was not crowded beginning of June which we thoroughly enjoy in the evening. The rooms are clean and mattresses great. We got a very good night sleep. I wouldn’t recommend having the breakfast here (which is continental - toast and gems), walk to the café nearby instead
