This was for me one of the most fascinating places in Meghalaya. There is a huge collection of stone monoliths in a sacred spot. They are in formations and obviously have some significance which we can only guess today. Yet they are probably quite ancient and remnants of an old way of life when wars were fought and ballads were performed in celebration of great heroes and their acts of bravery.
Some of the monoliths are very tall and others very heavy and it must have been a feat to assemble.
If you can use your imagination to recreate ancient ways, you must visit.

The monoliths are maintained by archeological survey of india, there are so many monoliths found in meghalaya, but the largest monolith is here.
To reach Nartiang, it will take 3.5 hours journey by private car from Guwahati(160 km), 61 km from Shillong, taxis are available all the way. Also don't miss the Durga Temple at Nartiang.

It's located in quite secluded place and it's almost pin drop silent. The tall megaliths were supposedly made and erected by a Jaintia warrior some 400-500 years ago. Nice to relax and away from noise

Monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive stone or rock, or a single large piece of rock placed within a monument. Nartiang Monolith are most significant but neglected structure. It is about 63 Km from Shillong Meghalaya. There are large clusters of monoliths at the place, which have been erected to mark the reign of the Jaintia Kings. It is said these monoliths are the structure laid down during1600 AD. Being neglected place, one can just walk and spend some time sitting over there. There are no restaurant or food joints on the way, as well as near to this site. The tourism department must maintain such a historical place.

Nartiang Monoliths is one of the most significant cultural structures of the Jaintias. It was laid out from 1600 AD and its amazing ti see how such big vertical blocks of stones were placed and designed.
